Has Ryan Buchholz started to get a little more playing time? PSU rotates so much that it's hard to keep track. It seemed that he was doing a good job when in the IU game. Good size at DE at 6'6" 270. Has he played inside some this year too? Both he and Kevin Givens seem to be guys who have really come on as the season has progressed.

Andrew Callahan at 247 has a snap count thread each week if you'd like to look. One each for offense and defense. Paints a picture, actually.

Complete defensive player snap counts for Penn State against Indiana as charted from the press box, thus allowing for a tiny margin for error. Brief analyses of each position group are also provided. Penalties not included.

DEFENSIVE ENDS

Garrett Sickels — 55 of 82

Evan Schwan — 49 of 82

Torrence Brown — 25 of 82

Shareef Miller — 24 of 82

Ryan Buchholz — 20 of 82

Analysis: Overall, there was zero surprise from how playing time shook out with this group. Sickels and Schwan registered ahead of the pack and saw action on consecutive drives with the game on the line late. They also teamed with Buchholz on certain obvious passing downs, as the youngster kicked inside to defensive tackle.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES

Curtis Cothran — 47 of 82

Parker Cothren — 38 of 82

Kevin Givens — 26 of 82

Robert Windsor — 20 of 82

Tyrell Chavis — 10 of 82

Antoine White — 9 of 82

Analysis: Givens has settled extremely well into his role as a second-stringer who part-times as a pass-rush specialist. Cothren saw his time spike after lining up for only 15 snaps last week during his return from injury against Iowa. Chavis and White could see their playing time double next weekend at Rutgers should the game develop into a blowout as expected.

Aside from Cothran,I like seeing than no DL'er played no more than 50% of the snaps.

It works this year. Last year, I thought a heavy workload for AJ, Nassib, and Zettel worked alright too.

They would have performed even better down the stretch - of course Nassib ended the season injured - if they had the same rotational depth this team has. They did rotate some last year too, but they usually substituted a whole fresh DL (if I remember correctly, especially from the games I attended). The starting DL was worn out at the end of the season because the O had so many 3 and outs. Witness the MSU game.

The point is that each season is individualistic. I'd take last season's line play over this season's. Wouldn't you?
