Just read he will not be competing next year due to continuing hip problems.

That's too bad... When healthy he's a great talent, even if his handshaking talents are at times subpar.

Reported that he'll be getting hip replacement surgery. Must have had the same necro-something to the bone that Bo Jackson did. Can't imagine going the next 60+ years with fake hips. Wish him well and hope that the mental toll isn't too great. Fun to watch.

This is probably a dumb question... How are him and David related? Brothers?

I can't even imagine having to get a hip replacement. Best wishes to him.

Don't know if serious but no.

I'm assuming someone will drop down? Stickley or Rowh maybe? Otherwise this is a hole. Wisconsin is a mystery to me. Barry Davis is an awesome coach but they just can't put a championship lineup together.

What it does, is move Cortez up one spot in the preseason rankings. Doesn't affect Clark(consensus #1), Richards, Brock, or any of them, but nearly every preseason mock I saw, had him around 4th to 7th, most of them had him one or two slots higher than Cortez.

Really sorry to hear this. I hate when wrestlers from any school are not able to compete because of injury. They work so hard that they deserve better.

I know one thing about the kid, he had an AWESOME throw-by...man that was hard to defend, for everyone he went up against.

Was serious... They kinda look alike and both from OH, right? Are they cousins? Or just pure coincidence?

Nobody wants to wrestle for WI. Pritzlaff and Frayer left. Big recruits left/didn't pan out. Thielke just drug them through the mud in a 5 Point Move interview, talking about how he was successful without them. Other than Graff, and 3 years of Howe, they've been Struggle City.
People in WI are sick of Davis and losing. I've gone to college in SW WI and met people from all over WI. I've taught in schools in SW WI. I have yet to meet one wrestling person that's like, "Nah, I believe in Barry to turn it around. Go Badgers!"

Wisconsin has certainly had their issues but they are still getting some good recruits. Evan and Zander Wick are a couple of very talented Cali wrestlers.

David Taylor's early years were in Wyoming.

David's Dad found him living in the streets of Bosnia when he was serving with the Navy Seals. Brought him home and raised him as his own. Gave him the name Ryan to honor a fellow member of the teams who died in the field... Master Chief Ryan Jusjoshin.

Now for the Jordan family tree... #23 had a son named Jeffrey...

I thought that was Brian Williams.

Whew...interesting.

I guess Barry Davis' longevity is credited to his most important fan of all: AD Barry Alvarez

Yea, there has been a number of fire Barry Davis threads on their forum since the Pritzlaff fiasco.

Let's take a real look at Barry Davis & WI. Between Recruiting and Producing, the dude really hasn't cut the mustard in the Big Ten. Yes, he just landed the Wick's and another Top 150 recruit from IN this recruiting period, but what else has he really done? I'm going to go through some of the evidence.

2016 Class: Lands Wick x2 and Coivacu from IN (all three at 165 or 157). Missed on Paul Bianchi from Two Rivers (NDSU), Hunter Marko from Amery (Xannisota), and Beau Breske of Hartford (Nebraska).
Isaac Jordan was in the finals of NCAA's. Taylor gets beat in R12.
Team: 8th @B10 Tournament.

2015 Class: Lands Cullen, Stickley, and Ritter (None from WI). Missed on Robert Lee (Pitt). Not a terrible recruiting year, as WI isn't super deep.
NCAA IND: Medberry 4th, Taylor and Jordan 7th.
Team: 8th @B10's.

2014 Class: Lands Jimenez and Christenson. WI has no Top 150 wrestlers in this class, so he didn't "miss" any, per se.
NCAA IND: Graff 2nd, Jordan 7th.
Team: 7th @B10's (in Madison).

2013 Class: Lands Crone, Leigel, Stilling, and Robertson. Missed on Rothwell (Pitt), Morrissey (Purdue), and Smerchek (Cen Mich). One other WI kid didn't wrestle anywhere.
NCAA IND: Graff 3rd (NCAA).
Team: 10th @B10's.

2012 Class: Lands Laux (who then transfers to Iowa), Lubeck, Koethe (who I think transfered to Grand Viewm eventually), Ryan Taylor and Isaac Jordan. Pretty awesome class if everyone stays. In addition, had Top 10 Devin Peterson before Peterson ran into legal trouble. Peterson was a WI kid, but they also missed Donar, Dunlap, and Weber.
NCAA IND: Ben Jordan 7th
Team: 12th @B10's (dead last)

2011 Class: Lands McCauley (who never ends up there, #2 recruit behind McIntosh), Kelliher, Medberry, Caldwell (whom I believe left or never started for WI), and Thielke (who isn't returning, and has nothing positive to say about them). The real kick in the balls is that they missed Dolezal (who fizzled in MN), SUEFLOHN, and DIERINGER.
They took 10th @NCAA's.
NCAA IND: Rutt 7th (leaves WI eventually), Graff 5th, Brandvold 4th, and Howe 3rd (eventually leaves with Rutt).
Took 4th @B10's.

Now, I realize that you're not going to get every in-state kid. But kids like Breske, Sueflohn, and Dieringer are MUST GETS. Some of the others didn't quite pan out. The point is, Barry Davis hasn't produced as much as a guy at Madison really could, in my opinion. I know it's an academic rigor, but Madison pretty much sells itself, in many ways.

Cut the mustard? Go back one more year in this analysis and you see a 4th place finish at Natty's with 4 AA's and a champ.

Is he a top five coach? Probably not. But he hasn't driven them into the ground by any means. Lots of recruiting "bad luck" there. And it's not like Wisconsin is a dominant HS wrestling state. Some good talent but not exactly the most consistent.

Thielke, Howe, Rutt left. Brandvold, Ruschell didn't. There were some ruffled feathers when Cael came in as well. And who would you even replace him with? What are the standards of Wisconsin wrestling? There are folks calling for Brands to be replaced.

I'm just saying 22 years shows you know at least something about what you're doing, regardless of who your friends are.

I understand WI isn't a dominant HS wrestling state, but MN sure has talent... Iowa... Illinois. There's no reason WI couldn't be better. I don't know who exactly I'd replace him with, but I think there is a need for new blood, there.

I'm not saying he's a trash coach, but WI wrestling could be better. And I think coaching has to do with it. You can chalk it up to "bad luck" but some of those had "bad luck" stamped on them before they left HS. He screwed the pooch by letting Pritzlaff and Frayer walk away.

Did he let them walk, or was it over his head?

Not that I necessarily believe Bert, but he did cite asst coach pay as a reason for bolting to Arky. And UW has a reputation for caring less about sports than other schools.

Maybe my timing is off here, but I didn't think Wisky set up its RTC until after they left.

Or maybe they left for other reasons.

A friend of mine who keeps in semi regular contact w BD still has nothing but glowing things to say about the program.

As others have said he has had a few things happen around him that take time to work around in this current arms race.

Iowa, psu under cael, Ok st are really blessed and receive a lot of good fortune to stay on top the way they do.

Been to Madison once and it was an awesome place.

Ya know, I've never met Davis. Watching him on ESPN, I think we'd get along. I get hyped and animated during matches. It isn't personal, necessarily, my gripe with him. I don't think he's a bad person. I just think he could do a better job. And that's why I'm an arm-chair-quarterback, posting on the internet.
