Schedules

That must be what is taking so long. Brands is appealing to the Big10 competition committee that being forced to travel to State College to wrestle the Lions is an unfair advantage afforded the Lions. Nor only from a competitive view point, but also from a recruiting view point.

Do we know what duals will be on the BTN or other networks(ESPN, ESPN 2, etc.)?

Holy cow woman. Don't stand to close to the shower door or you might get stuck for a week until things dry out.

Official statement from Cael: "Since we have the greatest fans in the sport, we have decided to have a little fun with them. Rather than issue a schedule this year, our wrestling team will go about our schedule accordingly with what other teams or tournaments have scheduled. Our fans will then do crazy insane research and guess what? We will sell out every meet and tournament any damn way, because bow down fools, that's why. Now excuse me because I'm going hunting..."

Penn State wrestling on the road always reminds me of that touring softball team "The King and His Court" that would travel from town to town and just obliterate whatever local softball team it played...usually with like 6 guys taking on 9, lol.

I saw an exhibition in the 70s where they came to our small town and played our local team with only a pitcher, catcher, first basemen and one fielder. It wasn't close and our team did not win. One of the King's guys hit a softball that I believe is still in lower earth orbit.

Yes seen king n court as well unbelievable, also not the only traveling team then. Went to tourny in Williamsport in the 80’s, travel coach pulled up and 10 gorillas stepped of and 2 tall lean guys (pitchers) the destroyed everyone.

Ditto for me in PA in the 70s (or even late 60s). The King struck out a batter from second base at one point; at another point he threw a pitch so fast that nobody could see it (assuming it wasn't a trick).

I saw the King in Ambler, PA. It must have been '62 or '63. Striking out guys while throwing between his legs from second base blindfolded.

I got an email notice from FLO about the schedules for this year. I went on and they had all the Big 10 teams listed with links to their schedules. It was great. Oh, there were one or two exceptions with no link. Don't know why.

I'm old. You youngsters don't appreciate what you have. When I was in college, the main avenue of communication in the wrestling community was Amateur Wrestling News. You looked forward to every issue. It had the results of all the duals around the country. You could track people you knew, or people you might be wrestling soon. To see someone in person, you had to travel. Now you can crawl out of bed, click a few clicks, and watch 8-year-olds wrestle.

Good old AWN! For what ever reason, I always had a really good memory for numbers. I still remember my phone number from when I was in grade school.

I used to pour over the results in AWN and both individual and team scores would stick. Months and even a few years later, I could still accurately recall details of important duals!

AWN was also the only place you could see photos of live action. I remember Wade Schalles once saying that when he saw a photo of a potential opponent, he would study it very closely. His theory was that the odds were good that the photo was capturing the wrestler in some move or position that he used often. Interesting logic - can’t say I disagree with it.

True, but Schalles didn't really need any scouting report...he was so good at it that he basically could pin just about anyone, in any way.

I still remember the '69 states. John Chatman of Trinity was a returning state champ and considered invincible by some. The match was going according to plan when Schalles threw that elevator in the 3rd period and decked Chatman. Even after that, I thought I'd never hear of Shalles again. Shows how much I knew. Strangely, one of the other state champs that year practiced with my team just before states. Bill Luckenbaugh dislocated my ankle in that practice. Pissed me off, too -- the next day I was scheduled to wrestle that year's national champ and was psyched.

I was at Rec Hall in 1969 to see the Schalles-Chatman match. As oldcougar noted, Chatman was cruising easily with something like a 5-2 lead, riding Schalles tough, and all of a sudden Schalles pulled off that elevator and it was over in seconds. Rec Hall went wild! I went to SCHS, and Schalles's last loss in HS was to a SC wrestler. Don Rockey beat Schalles at Districts in 1968. Two funky wrestlers went at it, and Rockey won something like 10-8 (not sure of exact score). Schalles was transformed between his junior and senior years of HS (reportedly by a Russian coach, although I'm not positive about that).

My memory is a bit hazy, but I thought I remembered a discussion on this board a year or so ago concerning the number of meets that a team could schedule in a season. It seemed like the figure was 12-15 and was set by the Big 10 conference.. I see Iowa has 17 scheduled so far assuming Sacred Heart and Buffalo is considered 1 meet. Am I remembering any of this right?
