Two ranked teams wrestled last night; both without a few starters. ASU didn't look all that impressive relative to the hype (except for the V. brothers). ISU was down right terrible; some credit to SDSU, they wrestled well.

ISU was missing several starters, but they didn't look very good. As your rivals to the west would say, they "Lost the Third". That said, conditioning in November after three whole weeks of practice isn't necessarily going to be in tip-top shape, we're still 19 weeks away from seeing the NCAA Champions get crowned.

Of note, SDSU set a Frost Arena wrestling record with their attendance last night of 1,814.

Missing 4/5 starters didn't help, but ISU took a total of about 4 offensive attacks in a 7 match streak. Not a good effort at all.

Indiana wrestled twice yesterday. Skipping the 37-7 whitewash of San Francisco State ...

Cal Poly 19, Indiana 18
125 - Elijah Oliver (Indiana) over David Gonzalez (Cal Poly) (Fall 4:06)
133 - Yoshi Funakoshi (Cal Poly) over Garrett Pepple (Indiana) (Dec 6-4)
141 - Colton Schilling (Cal Poly) over Tommy Cash (Indiana) (Dec 11-6)
149 - Luke Blanton (Indiana) over Joshua Cortez (Cal Poly) (Dec 9-2)
157 - Colt Shorts (Cal Poly) over Jake Danishek (Indiana) (Dec 5-4)
165 - Blake Kastl (Cal Poly) over Bryce Martin (Indiana) (Dec 6-5)
174 - Devin Skatzka (Indiana) over Mathew Wilhelm (Cal Poly) (Dec 10-7)
184 - Nathan Jackson (Indiana) over Thomas Lane (Cal Poly) (Fall 3:16)
197 - JT Goodwin (Cal Poly) over Norman Conley (Indiana) (Dec 6-2)
285 - Spencer Empey (Cal Poly) over Fletcher Miller (Indiana) (Dec 7-2)
Dual Meet Tiebreaker Criteria (CP 6 wins)

Jackson went 184 in both matches for IU.

Anthony Valencia demolished a pretty decent wrestler. Oklahoma St. transfer.

Your boy Maruca nowhere to be found!

You and I have both been skeptical of the Zeke Jones hype train - looks like the skepticism was warranted.

LemonPie, how long did it take to build rome? Kind of hard to get depth in one recruiting class...

And yet people were predicting 8 AAs and Top 3 finishes as soon as this year. Nevermind the awful redshirt years by Maruca and Benick. Nevermind that Naser wrestled 141 a couple years ago and made 57KG only once in his life (people had him at 125). Nevermind that Mathers and Villareal were not successful in folkstyle and Pagdilao had quit wrestling twice already. Nevermind Pierce never lived up to his prep career.

Was never a fan of the one huge class strategy. Feel like Northwestern was burned by it a couple times. Maybe even Rutgers. ASU whiffed on the class of 16 because they were so invested in 15. Now they are waiting around on Demison, Courtney, etc.

Not many reasonable people picked ASU top-3 that I remember. Other comments, about the Valencia brothers impacting the National Tournament, or that ASU may be top-10 as early as this year, but more likely next year...were far more the consensus. None of it recently though, given that at least one blue chipper left.

Yes. None of it recently. More like in the middle of last year. Maybe Top 5. And maybe I'm picking on 1 ASU homer. I'm a fraud.

I just don't like ASU, man!

but the Valencias are amazing. Shields and Hall are solid.

Lemon, I'm not a fan of the one-class strategy either, but it's sometimes unavoidable, particularly as it relates to a new coach (and he's still relatively early in his tenure at Arizona State). He wants to get a new culture in the room, and the easiest way to do that is often with a big going-away party for the old guys, and bringing in new blood in the form of freshmen who fit your mold. Besides, I'm pretty sure that worked pretty darned well for the school who's board we're occupying, even if a few of the wrestlers didn't pan out!

I'm used to you being very pithy. When you bring the wood, nice to see you using oak.

Jake Ryan loses to Caden McWhirter from Northern Illinois. I'm glad daddy was intent on making Jake a 4-year starter.

Keener gets pinned by essentially a 3rd stringer at Ohio state. Bleise and Morse go down as well

Why do the Iowa guys (besides Marinelli) at the Grand View Open enter the Freshman division? Seems soft.

I saw a result showing Massa won 1st place match @ 165, 8-4.

Aboundader won first place @ 184, 1-0.

It's tough to go thru trackwrestling on my phone.

If someone is bored, can they post the results or link of the finals matches ? Thanks !

You gotta pay to view the matches but those scores are correct. Massa got ridden out the 3rd period and looks like he got hurt

I just meant the scores. .... I can check when I get on the laptop later.

Trackwrestling is brutal on the phone.

Assad beat fleetwood 5-3 2OT
Pletcher won on a fft
Gasca beat mason smith cmu 9-4
Jordan majored Justin Oliver 15-7
Heffernan pinned McWhirter
Massa beat Hugh MSU 8-4
Myles Amine beat Christian Brucki 13-6
Abounader beat Ellingwood 1-0
Collin Moore beat Lefever (wabash university) 11-6
Garrett Gray (tiffin university) pinned Tyler kral (Purdue)

Marinelli with a couple of 9-3 wins to finish off his tournament win at the Grand View Open. Cooper Moore defaulted out, so didn't get to see that matchup. His win in the finals was over the NAIA runner-up. Not really sure it lives up to "best freshman ever" status, but I imagine he's more in the mold of a Suriano type.

Rathbun and Wagner had close losses to Rudy Yates
Kaleb Young, Happel, and Malcom won their Freshman brackets. No notable wins.
