Can someone please explain to me about the shushing the crowd thing and when it's a penalty? I know we've gotten called for it in the past. The UM back clearly shushed the crowd after his 4th down TD in the 2nd quarter and nothing. Is it a penalty or isn't it? And if it is, is it possible the refs missed it, although I don't know how that would have been possible?

Simply put, it is sometimes, it isn't other times. No clarification whatsoever from the NCAA on it. Free pass on the officiating crew if they do or don't call it.

I think it depends on the circumstances. If they shush the crowd for a couple seconds then move on, I don't think that's any big deal and should not draw a flag, IMO. However, if they make a big show of it or teammates join in, I believe the refs will flag them. I don't think the one last night was flag-worthy based on the crowd reaction. Or non-reaction.

They called it on Bill Belton a few years back, not sure which game. But Ive seen players do it numerous times with no consequence. Guess it all depends who s watching.

It apparently has something to do with the color of the "shusher's" helmet: generic white = 15-yard penalty; all others = no problem.
