SIAP: Jay's article on CA allowed CFB players to be compensated

All valid points, and then I look at how much money the school is pulling in and where it's going. Outrageous salaries for AD's, coaches, assistant AD and beaurocratic bloat, vastly overvalued and overstated scholarship values, etc., and I say **** it. When the main component of the argument is the school will no longer control and manipulate the purse strings, and the athletes will start to get a cut of it, then I will side with the athlete. Quite frankly, school presidents should be ashamed that it has gotten this far. They have no one to blame but themselves and their extravagant largesse.

I really didn’t see that as the main component of the argument in the article. There are ways to accommodate the “well-intentioned” notion that athletes get a cut without turning collegiate athletics into total mayhem. The California law isn't very well thought out.

Bloated salaries of coaches? Those coaches bring more money into the non-athletic side of the house than anyone else at the university.

Assistant ADs? You guys still let that bother you. PSU had a tiny AD in the JoePa era. So PSU hired a few new people and gave a few existing people some fancy titles. Hardly breaking the bank there.

The minute the university has to start paying players is when you see about 20 sports axed and the Title IX people start jumping off ledges.

There are 100s of coaches that could perform as well as the avg div 1 coach... which is... average.

The reasons coaches are paid so much is because that is one of the few strings management can pull to get themselves more.

What percentage of the $$$$ brought in by PSU ICA (and most similar programs) is spent on the “kids”?

Here is what is amazing...... I’d wager the mortgage money that YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW, and yet you post the drivel you just wrote.
How do you allow yourself to even do that? Without some response system kicking in and telling you “Maybe I should just shut the f*** up?”

When you can answer that simple, basic, prerequisite question...... let us all know.
And then we can give your “hot take” the weight it deserves :)

Yep, all the surplus each year goes right into Sandy's pockets. You got me. How could I ever be so naive that an AD with 31 sports (28 of which lose money) would re-invest its profits.

I am reminded of Dambly stating he wished the athletic department could take on more debt. Hmm...

No doubt these coaches could work their magic without good players. CJF might disagree with that.

And I’m wondering if we get to sit back and decide how much money he should be making in his job and determine he’s making too much now.

Jay should get some sort of job. That CVS that turned McQueary down would probably take him.

But to be honest, people don’t follow the players, they follow the school. The players are known because they play for the school, not the other way around.

So the coach gets $5mm+ a year because people "follow the school?" Without good coaches and players, the "school" is 2-10 and people go to the Civic Light Opera on Saturday afternoons.

People follow the coach more than the players, and good coaches make that much so they won’t go somewhere else.

You must have incredible flexibility for all of the stretching you do.

If a player wants to sell his likeness, I would assume that the University would never allow the team colors, logos, etc. to be used in conjunction w/ the product. Correct?

They would if the player paid the licensing fees

What I find amusing is how everyone couches the outlooks on how they will affect football. I'm much more interested in how it affects the NCAA's cash cow - basketball.

I'm not looking for an argument and have no real idea how this will play out, but IMHO, I think this will be the end if CFB and CBB and will decimate non-revenue sports.
When college becomes professional, there is no need for college. I also think that interest in CFB wanes bc it will simply be a lesser NFL.
If CFB manages to survive, money will be dedicated to running the business and not support the Athletic Dept at large so non-rev sports still go away. Not advocating for any one direction, but just discussing what I think would happen.

While I honestly would hate it for the respective student athletes losing an opportunity to get an education and play at a Penn State, good, as there is absolutely no reason Penn State needs 31 teams. I would be happy to help get the number of teams down to about 17. Get rid of swimming and diving, no reason to spend $100M on a new nat. Eliminate tennis, no reason to spend money on a new tennis complex. While baseball and softball both have nice facilities, they both will never been anything but average, if even that.
