Right here is the benefit of a large playoff field. You get great matchups like this often because top-tier teams want to be prepared, win or lose, for the post-season. Awesome news.
It's also a function of a thirty game season where one loss doesn't kill you or, at least, contribute to your demise. And if a team has a reasonable expectation of winning its conference, it's irrelevant.

Additionally, football scheduling is probably driven more by revenue considerations. Even with an expanded playoff, I doubt you'd see many powers scheduling more than one home-and-home against other powers.
I think you'd see teams schedule at least one a year for resume purposes. Our best non-conference game wouldn't ever be Pitt.
