SIAP- Urbans letter to OSU nation.............

It could be a "yeah, I'm back" letter.

It could also be a "OK OSU, your move"

An awful lot of words but he never actually says the words "I lied."

You'd think someone who does a lot of press conferences would understand that "no comment" or "I'm not prepared to talk about X" is vastly preferable to "I don't know anything about X" when the latter statement is a lie. Don't say you don't know anything when you know something -- you have no idea what could come back and bite you (such as a text from your wife that has been stored on the phone of another person).

Nevertheless, lying at the Big Ten press conference won't cost him his job. Now if there are other lies such as lies to OSU administrators, that could be trouble.

The fact that he's releasing statements on his own (not OSU statements) makes me go back to thinking he could be in trouble of losing his job. I keep going back and forth. But if OSU is just waiting for things to die down then why would they have this guy keep making statements? Just shut up keep quiet for now.

With the scrutiny he is under, its hard to believe he would claim he followed proper protocols if he can't back it up.

I would tend to agree, but it is not unheard of for famous people to lie to the media about their innocence and then be proven a liar. Hubris.

I think it’s a move so he gets paid when he leaves. He knows the witch hunt is on and he is on his way out. He is just trying to get a defense so they have to pay him to leave. I’m no Urban or OSU fan but a lot of this is feeling very familiar.
When do sponsors start threatening or leaving? Women’s groups are most likely enrouute, Let the feeding frenzy continue. Who can hate domestic violence the mostest?

That's a plausible take. Who knows at this point...

Urban Meyer's statement seems written with contract law in mind. It denies any grounds that Ohio State could use to fire him with cause. At the same time, it acknowledges his answers to journalists' questions were inadequate--a personal failing that doesn't violate his contract.

He's SI's sports law guy and probably the best sports law guy in the country right now.

What an unbelievable phony.

Wow, this guy has no business being a football coach anywhere,

Apparently Zach Smith is currently on the radio talking right now.... interesting. He says everybody knew in 2015.

He'll be back within a few weeks. This is part of a simple mea culpa....

Yup. This seems like the next step in a containment strategy - trying to walk back some of the comments made at B1G media day to shift the narrative from 'Urban Liar' to 'unprepared to answer tough questions', the latter of which is a ludicrous proposition if you consider Urban's history and watch the actual Q&A with the reporters from cleveland.com.

The mandatory reporting language was added to his contract rather recently (after 2015) I believe, so it is entirely possible he did nothing and it was still by the books so to speak.

Zach Smith to be on ESPN at 6 defending himself saying he never hit wife and defending Urban that they discussed 2015 incident and AD Geno knew as well and spoke to him as did police. Nothing happened and nothing hidden by anyone, everyone knew of allegation and it was police investigated and he was exonerated.

Says in 2015, Urban told him that if he struck her, then he was gone. Claims investigation proved otherwise.

Hope they ask him why he was fired

The conspiracy theorist in me believes that OSU will magically find a report made by Urban in 2015....The commission will then rubber stamp Urban coming back....
On the positive side, at least Urban didn't throw his wife under the bus...

If police were involved, there will be a report.

Wait, wait I need a scorecard for all this. Didn’t Urbs say he had no knowledge of 2015? And now Smith is saying he discussed it with him but nothing happened. The police then investigated something but then the blotter was changed from something to nothing. This just goes around and around in circles. But then again maybe that’s the plan.

Lying to the media is not a crime. Trump does it daily, Obama did it regularly about keeping your plans and doctors, every football coach including Franklin does as well when he does not want to answer their stupid gotcha questions. The Press sucks.

The issue is not lying to press, but what happened in 2015, was it properly reported and why was he not fired then, and if he did nothing wrong in 2015 then why fired now?

Courtney Smith has made multiple police reports about husband/ex. to police but has declined to press charges and or police have never arrested Zach Smith.
Zach Smith was fired because this(2018) time an order of protection was granted to Courtney Smith.
Zach Smith is quoted as acknowledging that AD Gene Smith, was in fact aware of a police complaint (again no arrest) in 2015.
Gene Smith is about to retire IMO and Urban is back in the saddle soon.

If Smith was found to be uncharged in '15, why was he fired for this so rapidly? How did the other events come to pass with zero media attention and this has been fairly publicized?

Something isn't right. Does not add up.

I think so. Obfuscate until you find something that sticks. Is that not the job of a PA dept.?

The answer to your last question is that in the past she did not go to media and this time she finally did.

The first question is the one that needs explained as well as the pictures of her beaten up.

Probably tough when the money behind the husband and the lawyer/life coach are likely threatening to take her kids away...

Did Urban say that if he had known about 2015, he would have fired Smith then?

Zach Smith says Urban told him in 2015 that if he struck her he would be fired. He denied ever striking her and says police investigation did not show he struck her. Zachs words not Urbans.

This is the piece that will be hard to talk away. What happened that caused him to be fired? What became known in 2018 that wasn't known in 2015 when the school took no action? That Urban lied at the B10 presser isn't a debate. He claimed he knew about the 2009 incident and that he and his wife tried to help, but denied knowledge of 2015 incident until the night before the press conference. That statement was untrue and he knew it wasn't true when he said it. That is pretty much a dictionary definition of a lie no matter what nice language you choose to wrap it in. It also makes any claim that he didn't know about the texts between victim and his wife (and the pictures that went with them) extremely hard to believe.

He probably grabbed her, slung her, held her down, choker her. All violent shit, but doesn't fit this specific "struck her" narrative. Sounds a lot like word play to me. Trying to save Urban some face. You would think they had plans on how to approach this. It's almost as if they assumed nothing would come of it. Never did before, ya know?

Urban wasn't "adequately prepared" for media questions about Zach Smith last Tuesday? Urban lied because he wasn't "adequately prepared"?

What the hell did he think they were going to ask?!?!?!?!?!?!

He fired Zach Smith Monday night! OF COURSE they are going to ask about that!

"Telling the truth" appears to be something that is a challenge for Urban Meyer.

Not saying this is correct, but a lot of the media attention may have started with Courtney going to the press this time around. That seems to be the difference between 15 and now at first glance.

From what I read of the statement
1. Meyer the liar lied to protect a serial abuser and
2. Meyer the liar lied to protect the football team. In fact all the coaches who knew and did nothing are all complicit. It’s a cultural thing.

I’ve seen this movie before.

I believe he was fired because he violated an order of protection in dropping off his kids (trespassing). He has never been arrested prior to that.

Yup, was just speaking specifically to the media attention aspect. If Courtney wasn’t providing text messages and interviews this wouldn’t be as big a deal
