the fastest 40 of any incoming freshmen. Faster than

  • Dotson, a four star WR
  • George, a four star WR
  • Gordon, a four star DB
  • Slade, a four star RB
  • Humphries, a three star DB
  • Shorter, a five star WR
Oweh is listed as 6-5, 240.

Yea I saw that too and kind of went Huh? What about Slade and Shorter?

Who cares? Did he say whether or not he is going to Illinois or green-lit?
He said something to the affect that his play against Ill will determine the rest of the season. My interpretation of that is that he is saying Oweh will play Friday and if he does well, will be in the rotation the rest of the year. If not, to the Red Shirt pile he will go.

Actually I think he said/meant fastest out of the bunch of kids that came in same time as he did, excluding early enrollers and next batch that arrived early summer.
Either way he is impressively athletic.

I thought that was the first he's played.
So even if he doesn't travel to Illinois he could still play 3 more games.
Which brings me to my next question did the travel size roster change with the new RS rule?

well, I took it was that he would play against ILL. Anything can happen to need to burn a shirt, but he'll get into the rotation and not be Red Shirted if he plays well. If not, the INTENT, would be to RS him. At least, that would be the intent coming out of ILL but things can change. To your point, he can play more, but the intent would be to manage that and RS him if he doesn't play well.

Amazing how slim the guy is for a D-lineman
(this pic goes back to his commitment, but he looked similar wearing #28 vs Kent St)

I understood it the same as Obl. Good news is he can play two additional games even if he isn’t in the regular rotation.

The travel roster increased to 74 from 70.

It has been previously stated by coach Spence and several players that Oweh runs sub 4.4 forties consistently.

I heard:

Will play this week (gets 2 weeks).
How he plays will determine if greenshirted or another 2 weeks later or if needed.

Tarburton got first 2 weeks.

Oweh and Simmons are crucial from this point out. Simmons has some sick DE moves and is strong against the run and has shock value in making plays behind the LOS. So what if Oweh only plays 12, 15, 18 plays per game? Sub him in the best situations and allow him to attack. The only difference between OSU and PSU at this point is really the defensive line - Simmons/Oweh can help close that gap.

Wouldn't Simmons be on the depth chart if he was definitely playing this week?

Oweh having this kind of speed is certainly highly unusual for a DE. Most of the time, DE’s are running only 5 - 10 yards, so that first step needs to be quick. After that, I am not sure that having that sort of top gear does much practically. I suppose Oweh might have the ability to cross the backfield and track down scrambling QB’s in ways we aren’t used to seeing.
If Oweh has receiver abilities, that kind of size and speed would make him a very big matchup problem.

Franklin pointed out that Oweh's entire exposure to the game of football is a season and a half of high school and preseason practice at PSU.

But he's so talented, he might have to play. Franklin said he was really productive with a small sample size last Saturday (which of course we could all see). So sounds like he'll be playing and if he can continue to be productive, he won't redshirt.

That's what it sounded like. He might be so freakishly athletic he has to play.

And you should know that Shane Simmons is not on this weeks depth chart and that damn well means something. It means he isn't playing.

Custerdome, you really need to re-evaluate your logic on these depth charts that Penn State puts out. Simmons not on the depth chart means nothing. Nick Tarburton is listed as the 3rd DE at both DE positions this week just like last week. Tarburton official status is HOLDING PATTERN as they are keeping him for depth later in the season. Oweh IS NOT listed on the depth chart and Franklin is on record as saying his play against Illinois will determine his status for the rest of the season. Oweh will either join the rotation for the rest of the season or join Tarburton in the 2 more games and can still RS club. I don't think Simmons plays this week because they want to make sure they have him for Ohio State. Franklin kept Bell and Cabinda out until Ohio State 2 years ago. He held Barkley out an extra game for Ohio State 3 years ago.

Particularly if Bosa is out.

I think too often we make this game more complicated than it should be at certain positions. It’s not rocket science. If you have incredible athletic gifts how much experience does one need to accomplish this. “ There’s a big guy in front of you, go thru or around him as fast as you can then tackle the guy with the ball. “ I know there’s much more involved, but without the natural genetic gifts you’re upside is limited no matter how much experience you have.

According to elevator talk (yes literally, talk in an elevator on campus) from about 2 weeks ago Oweh has been having a grand old time and has worked his way into Franklin's dog house. I don't know what he's been up to, but the sources couldn't wait to find out what Franklin was going to do about it. They were laughing quite a bit.

Screw that! Make him a safety. That would put the fear of god into any receiver coming across the middle.

Hard to believe Oweh plays against Kent St if he's in the doghouse. Heck, Franklin held out Givens for an entire game for a disciplinary matter. And he's a starter. Why would he give a true freshman his first playing time of the year at then end if a blowout if the kid is in the doghouse?

You should probably read what people write, real slowly, before responding. Two weeks ago? Guys were laughing? Perhaps, just perhaps, it wasn't that bad? However, if you don't want harmless stories about the team you should only read the OT posts.

Good grief, why the snark? You wrote that "elevator talk" suggested that Oweh had "worked his way into Franklin's doghouse" and I questioned the logic of that by juxtaposing the Givens situation with Oweh's. That was all. And stop with read slowly baloney.

We're going to need him because it doesn't look good for Simmons.

You are implying here that Simmons is done for the year, why else would he be need 'because it doesn't look good for Simmons'.

I got a newsflash for you... our players do not comment on their injury status because they are not permitted to. The coaching staff knows what they have in Simmons, so they really don't need to play him right now, they are using his 'absence' to evaluate the younger DEs so they know what they are capable of during game time so IF needed later in the season, they know who is ready to go. IF we had a stronger opponent weeks 1-3 we most likely would have seen Shane by now... we haven't needed him. I think there is a 75% chance we see him at some point on Friday.
