So Hamilton makes the catch...

against Pitt at the end of the game. The rest of the season plays out as it did. Do we get into the 4 team playoff? Or would the powers that be have found another bs reason to keep us out. I personally feel they would have heaped tons of crap on the 39 pt. loss to UM and kept us out....JMO...what do others think?

Nope, if we beat Pitt and Pitt wins all of the rest of the games that they did, then Penn State gets into the playoff, ahead of Clemson maybe.

Agree - suddenly, margin of victory/loss is the most important metric and they find a way to keep us out.

This is a hypothetical in which 1. we beat Pitt and 2. UM beat Iowa. In that scenario OSU, UM, PSU all finish with 1 loss, 8-1 in conference and they beat each other head to head. In this instance a draw would have determined the East division. We were really only 2 plays away from this happening: catching the pass in the Pitt game and Iowa missing a FG.
Ah, yes. I see now that I misunderstood. I was puzzled as to why you had to bring it up again and I realize now it was because I wasn't paying close enough attention to your post. Carry on.....

That still drives me nuts. If Dantonio just runs the same play on which they easily scored the touchdown on the previous play, they convert. But he thinks that they should pass. That one confused me.
There were still 4 minutes left in the game. OSU would have been less conservative on offense if they were trailing.

De Sean wasn't the reason we lost this game so maybe the thread should be titled if PSU beats Pitt. There were a lot of plays that game which could have resulted in a diff outcome. We never win based on one or lose based on one.

The only way we ever get into a playoff is to go 13 -0

Could not agree more. If we lose a game, it's over and we're playing for the scraps. Even then it would be a grudging 4 seed couched in "weak schedule, no style points, the sun was out, the moon was in, it was hot, it was windy, it was cold, they barely beat team X, they needed OT to beat team Y, etc."

Thank you. Maybe if the defense did not give up over 35 points maybe we would have won. I know the thread was not intentional but Hamilton did not lose the game

If he doesn't make clutch catches against Wisconsin we quite possibly lose this game and the discussion then becomes moot.

I'm still trying to figure out how Penn State fans believe that going undefeated will get us a shot at the national title? It certainly didn't work in 1968, 1969, 1973 (with 2 teams ahead of us with ties!), or 1994. The only reason it worked in 1986 was that the other undefeated team was also an independent. Had Miami at the time been in a conference, Penn State would likely have been denied a shot then, too.

Based on Penn State history, I can see Penn State going 13-0 in the same year that Alabama, USC, Florida State, Texas go 13-0 and Notre Dame goes 12-0. We end up playing #5 in Arlington for 3rd place.

It's not as clear cut as that. The 1969 team could have gone to the Cotton Bowl to play Texas, but chose to go to the Orange instead. They had good reasons, but it turned to be a mistake. !994, you can thank the B1G for being late to the BCS party.

Hamilton or McSorley makes a play at that point of the game and PSU wins , we make the playoffs. The injuries would have been the talking point for the Michigan game .
And asking a hypothetical about one post isn't blaming a player .

I'm just hoping roles are reversed next year vis a vis OSU and we put Delaney in a tough position having to bite his tongue.

On the other hand, Davis misses the kick late against Minny and PSU doesn't go to the B1G CCG. This team completely exceeded my expectations and I (for one) have enjoyed the ride. How pumped are you now for 2017?!
