So we've done favorite and most influential how about most underappreciated Band...

Cheap Trick
The Replacements
XTC
Split Enz
Bruce Hornsby and the Range

Good submissions... though Cheap Trick is in the RRHOF so one can argue they’re not underrated/underappreciated

i’d add: Dinosaur Jr, The Church, The Fixx, The Cult, The Pixies, SoNic Youth, The Fleshtones, Husker Du / Bob Mould, Kent, Magna Carta Cartel, Subvision, Dandy Warhols, Pete Yorn,

Whitesnake 1978-1986 .... the pre hair-band iterations of Whitesnake offerred high-credential rythmn & blues, which apparently did little to pay the rent in the mid-eighties; unfortunately Coverdale sold them down the road of poseur-shit-rock after 1986... which brings up another topic - bands that jumped-the-shark

Bob Mould wrote the theme music for The Daily Show. The version of it used for the first many years of the show was performed by They Might Be Giants.

Phenomenal band. Pretty appreciated though, aren’t they?
Wasn’t sure how we were classifying under appreciated. I know they don’t have the same wide commercial appeal as bands like The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. that’s why I listed them. I would list an unheard of band but then they’re probably underappreciated because they’re not good enough, which is why they’re unheard of.

One of my guilty pleasures of the 80s is Billy Squier... made zero apologies for being influenced by Robert Plant / Led Zep or even outright copying them.... surrounded himself with really good players, did not try to solve world problems ( though Learn How to Live showed he was a good enough songwriter to dabble in it ) ...

In the Dark
is one of my time machines back to senior year in high school... when I catch that song on Sirius I can smell the May sunshine and hear cans of Genny and girls blouses popping open for me ;)

Gave Big Star a listen for about 2 straight hours yesterday. This is a great song. I like a couple others, but I just don’t like it overall. I try to force feed I t to myself because of the obvious Replacements connection but it never works for me.
On a related note, an older gentleman I used to work with at a liquor store 25 or so years ago claimed he used to be the drummer for the Box Tops and that he sang The Letter because Alex Chilton didn’t show up to the studio the day they were recording it. I never believed him but it made for a fun story.

Underappreciated or underrated is always difficult because while some people will say they’ve never or barely heard of them other will say ‘Are you kidding? They are one of the all time greats!’.

I’ll go with The Smiths. Another lesser known band would be The Tubes.
Are you kidding? The Smiths are one of the all time greats!
