Sooooo....remember Hudson Clement @ WVU?

100%. I've never said a bad word about the young man. I've simply told the truth to those that think PSU should trying to find the next John Urshel or HC. It's preposterous and would lead to PSU being a worse team.

My post was in general. I'm with you 100%.

You do you Kaspar. There's simply not enough hours in the year for that to be a winning strategy. Happy New Year
Same to you, Friend.
Some other more recent walkons:

Matt McGloin
Carl Nassib
Dom DeLuca
Ryan Barker
My last comment on this topic. Tom Herr, a Pennsylvania kid who was an incredible all around athlete, had a basketball scholarship to NC State, was not drafted by MLB. Signed as a free agent with St Louis when he led his Hempfield American Legion team to the state championship AFTER his senior high school season. He became a National League All Star.

Neil Walker, another MLB All Star led Pine Richland to the state football championship. It stands to reason that kids who play on state championship caliber teams are great athletes. Especially the players who excelled for those teams. It doesn’t take a whole lot of leg work to identify the best players on state championship teams such as this cat Hudson Clement.

Finally, the people running these recruiting services are largely not College coaches. The fact is most of them are former photocopier or insurance salesmen. I’m sure Coach Franklin has more expertise in this area than any recruiting service. I guarantee you that Joe did.

They signed Rodney Gallagher, who has great speed but hasn't produced like Hudson has. Journey Brown had great numbers and was only offered at the last minute. It's tough to evaluate athletes when the level of competition isn't great and they don't compete in the camp circuit. It's not an exact science that's why late bloomers have to earn their way via junior college or walk-on opportunities.

Okay.
1. It's not reasonable to compare 40+ years ago before schollie limits, to the era of the internet, camps, recruiting services, and NIL.

2. My main point is very basic and unassailable. PSU is a top 10% team. It needs to recruit from the top echelon of players to remain there. There are only so many coaches and so many hours that can be dedicated to recruiting. Dedicating hours to driving around the back hills of America, trying to find a kid with zero offers that might have escaped the attention of the other 133 FBS programs and all 129 FCS teams would be a dereliction of duty.

HC could be the next Jerry Rice and that statement would still be true. If PSU was a functioning program at the time, John Urshel never would have been recruited, but PSU was desperate for bodies and so they offered a kid with Zero offers, a month after his final HS game.
All true, they're arguing the exception is the rule. They're wrong. I think some people forget that these kids are usually 17 or 18 years old and they might do some growing and developing in the meantime.

Yup. It's absolutely crazy to suggest that a top 10% program can dedicate any resources to finding kids with zero offers.

Option 1: dedicate 5 hrs to contacting multiple known targets.
Option 2: spend 5 hrs driving to the WV panhandle with the hope of finding a kid that 260 other schools haven't found yet.

Which one, on average will result in landing higher ranked kids?

In the portal era, it doesn't matter near as much. Somebody will buy him if they want. WV kid walks on at WVU, earns a 'ship, and leaves for year 3.

Are you stupid or what? You don’t have to drive anywhere in this day and age to determine if a kid has potential. You literally defeat your own argument. Scary. Please don’t tell me you have a Penn State degree.

And he's committed to Illinois so it doesn't matter.

HC scored EIGHT TD's in the State Championship game. They have this thing called the internet now. But suppose we looked and were not impressed enough. 3 years go by. He catches 11 passes (out of 12 targets) for 177 yds and 2 TDs in their bowl game. His recruiting in the portal starts again. Once again, no mention of PSU interest.

One thing about the portal is, recruiting never stops. Except if a good player is 2.5 hours away, that is.

You seem angry? Everything okay?
How exactly is the PSU staff supposed to find kids without tape, offers, camps, or coaches doing any promotion?

Here's an actual video of JF leaving a recruiting stop in WV. He found an old bandsaw in the woodshop, but no football players. 🤷

Not angry at all, the term you’re looking for is incredulous. That a college graduate would think it’s difficult to determine that a kid who literally sets records in a state championship game would be difficult to track down and recruit. As I said, you could get a student trainer to do the legwork, make a few calls to area coaches and invite the kid to your camp. Voila! I’m a recruiting genius!

Then why did every other school in the country miss out on him?

Illinois didn't. You guys cannot seem to understand that recruiting never ends now. We missed him AGAIN.

The guy who ran back the 2d half kickoff for ND started at Vandy, then portalled to Marshall, then ND.

We didn't miss--you have to stop with this
Clement is a nice add for Illinois--he doesn't alter anything with our team. He'd be another depth guy fighting for playing time. He was going to go somewhere he was guaranteed playing time.

Lol. Cause our WR room is so choked up with all stars? Got it. Smh.

That's not what I said...he's on par with what we have. Thats a compliment to him and why he'd go to Illinois to get guaranteed reps. They wouldn't be guaranteed here. Doesn't mean he wouldn't earn them but he didn't leave WVU to fight for playing time.

What PSU receivers have 71 catches and 3 drops? 177 yards in a single game?

People who never played sports against superior athletes or professional caliber athletes don’t understand that there are players who just have it. It is not always easily measurable but winners have it. Mike Piazza was the last player selected in his MLB draft class. This kid Hudson has it. The know-it-alls just don’t get it and never will.

I don't know if we looked at him as a viable target, but we picked up Ross for the same role.

HC wasn't going to come here to just fight for playing time, or do you think he was?
