The next stop is due south from Fargo in Brookings, South Dakota.
Chris Bono did a great job building up SDSU’s program. However, in addition to the coaching changes, there’s quite a bit of turnover in SDSU’s lineup this year with at least 5 new starters.
125 – Morris (Sr) <Roosevelt, SD> or Molitor (Fr) <Sartell, MN>
Kahlen Morris went 9-6 in opens last year. Rylee Molitor went 20-10 @133 in his redshirt season. Last year, Connor Brown had a 26-16 record as a true freshman and went 1-2 in the tournament. Brown has since followed Coach Bono to Wisconsin.
133 – Gross (Sr) <Apple Valley, MN>
Seth Gross returns for his last season to defend his title (29-1 season record) in a crowded field @133. Gross was runner-up in 2017 and went to the round of 12 @141 in 2016.
141 – Pohlmeyer (Jr) <Johnston, IA>
Henry Pohlmeyer had a 23-11 season record last year and qualified for the tournament, going 1-2.
149 – Carlson (So) <Wilmar, MN>
Colten Carlson went 8-17 as the starter last year.
157 – Lloyd (Fr) <Shakopee, MN>
Alex Lloyd is an incoming freshman and a 3-time Minnesota 3A champion @152. He will be replacing Luke Zilverberg who finished 8th last year from the 13 seed (33-11 season record). Zilverberg also qualified in 2017, going 2-2.
165 – Peterson (Sr) <Atwater, MN> or Carlson (Jr) <Wilmar, MN>
Logan Peterson was the primary starter last year, going 15-12 and not qualifying for the tournament. Zach Carlson also got some starts @165 and went 4-6 on the year.
174 – Jordan (So) <St. Paris Graham, OH> or O’Neil (Fr) <Prior Lake, MN>
Garrett Jordan went 11-11 in opens last year. Incoming freshman Kenny O’Neil could also be an option (a Minnesota 3A state champion). Last year, David Kocer finished 7th from the 11 seed (29-8 season record). Kocer also qualified in 2017 (1-2) and 2016 (2-2).
184 – Mueller (Jr) <Rapid City Central, SD>
Martin Mueller went 23-8 last season and qualified for the tournament, going 0-2. He had the misfortune of drawing Bo Nickal in the 1st round (but he did hold Bo to a MD).
197 – Grove (Fr) <Moorhead, MN> or Sloan (Fr) <Alburnett, IA>
Grove went 9-13 during his redshirt year. Tanner Sloan is an incoming freshman who is a 2-time Iowa 1A state champion @195. The new starter will be taking over for 4-time qualifier Nate Rotert (R12 in 2018, 1-2 in 2017, 1-2 in 2016, 0-2 in 2015).
Heavy – Wolters (So) <Pipestone, MN>
Blake Wolters went 15-13 last year (mostly in opens). He will be replacing Alex Macki who went 13-14 last season and did not qualify for the tournament.
Edit: Vough is gone from the team. I dont know why or to where. I saw a reference to him being gone on the SDSU message board and he's not on the team roster in the SDSU wrestling website.
Vough (Fr) <Elyria, OH>
Kevin Vough went 16-8 during his redshirt season.
SDSU returns NC Seth Gross and 2 other qualifiers (Pohlmeyer and Mueller) but loses 2 AAs (Kocer and Zilverberg), 2 other qualifiers (Brown and Rotert) and a very good coach. They won’t likely be repeating last season’s 12th place/42 point performance this season but perhaps new coach Damion Hahn will build upon Bono’s success in future years.
