Stanley Cup Playoffs: Flyers vs. Pens Round 1

Little brother syndrome?? Ha ha , spoken by the sufferer.

Flyers = one of the best franchises in all hockey history (no caveats needed). Check the records, son.

1975 destroys that argument. You can go 40+ years without a title and claim to be one of the best franchises in NHL history. The Flyers have won 2 Cups in their history.

I don't hate the Flyers but let's be real. It should be a good series and the Flyers can win the series but Flyers fans do have the little brother syndrome going on here.

Only Flyers fans view their franchise as NHL royalty haha. No one else does. The Pens have flaws this year for sure and probably are no better than the 5th or 6th best team this year. Goaltending is inconsistent. Top 5 Defensivemen are below the line as a unit. PK is pathetic at times and no better than average. So can the Flyers beat the Pens.....sure. Can they win the Stanley Cup.....not even close.

Shero sees the big picture in New Jersey. He didn't want anything to do with the Pens in the first round and we know Columbus is tired of seeing the Pens in the first round. Look at who was benched. Once Philly won both those teams knew what they wanted...

Personally, as a Pens fan, Jersey scared me more than any of the other metro teams but Philadelphia is probably the second best matchup for the Pens. If Murray is solid the Pens should win in 5, maybe 6. Philadelphia is probably a year a way. Should be fun to watch though

I'm just ready for playoff hockey. Avs-Blues is great hockey. I feel bad for Nashville--Colorado is not a good reward for having the best record in the league.

How about the more obvious... after several weeks of having their backs against the wall and must win games, they rested their players?

Don't think they care 6,7 or 8 since the #1 wasn't even settled at the time.

Flyers fans are so cute haha. Little brother syndrome can be a rough thing to kick though. It’s your annual right to root against a Pen’s run to another Cup but don’t embarrass yourself by disrespecting one of the 3 best franchise since the 90s.

Little brother syndrome .... that’s a bit ridiculous

Flyers vs Pens

More cups = Pens (obviously most important)
Better all time record = Flyers
Better all time head to head = Flyers
Better all time head to head playoffs = Flyers
More playoff appearances = Flyers
More Cup finals appearances = Flyers
More Division Titles = Flyers

And out of all those stats, only one matters. Can you guess which one?

People forget that the penguins have a good streak because they tanked like a bitch for so many years.

Well it is hard to argue that they didn't tank to get Lemieux over Muller. As for Crosby, they got lucky.

If it wasn't for those two, Pittsburgh would probably have 0 cups and wouldn't have a franchise. But fortunately for Pittsburgh, they do.

And the Flyers got unlucky in that when the time came for them to haven the first pick in the draft , the process switched to the lottery. And flyers got JVR instead of Patrick Kane

Shit happens ...

Ok. Keeping in line with that thinking

in your opinion is the University of Miami a better football program than Penn State?
I don't think I have to tell you that college sports, esp. football, are different than the pros. Does anyone remember the runner up in pro sports? Does anyone care who won the regular season?

Yes... People do remember those teams actually.

And let’s keep it to pro sports. Do you think that since 1993 the Marlins have been a better franchise than the Braves or Phillies?

Murray's playoff history makes a reasonable person think he can rise to the occasion but I am very worried about whether or not he can stay healthy.

I have zero concern about Schultz, Maata or Dumo. Letang terrifies me. Even Oleksiak has been solid. Ruhwedel/Hunwick is definitely a problem but they likely won't see much ice time.

When you have Sid, Geno & Phil are separate lines and hopefully Sheahan centering the fourth line you always have a chance. The Pens know what it takes to win a Cup. We'll see if they an elevate their game as they've done the past 2 year. As Geno said when asked if they were upset they didn't win the division, "we never win the division". I don't think the Pens are in a bad spot at all right now. Until someone beats them the Pens remain the favorite in the East IMO. Tampa/Boston and Washington haven't proven they can win the postseason.

I love to see the playoff intensity beginning to rise, even on college message boards. Sadly as an Islanders fan, I have no skin in the game (again).

Flyers in six. Say good bye to the Cup Pens fans! There is a new city of champions about to be recognized. The Eagles (again), Phillies, Flyers and 76ers will all win world championships before Pittsburgh sees another one.

As somebody from western Pa who doesn't have anything against any Philly team besides the Flyers, I saw this coming a mile away. Philly wins one championship and all of a sudden their fans are the cockiest sports fans on the block.

I don't follow baseball that closely. No one is holding parades for the runner up. No one from the losing playoff teams is invited to the White House. The runner up is not in the history books as the greatest team. A player isn't considered great until he wins it all. The goal in the pros is to win. That is the only metric that matters. Hence, why teams are in a window to win, they go for it. If a coach can't get the team over the hump, he is fired. They don't say, gee we have a team that can make the playoffs every year, let's be satisfied with that.

So who is the greatest team? The one that is left standing at the end. Which is the better franchise? The one with the most teams who were left standing at the end.

In football, why are the Patriots so great? Because they have won championships. Why aren't they remembered for the great season where they had one loss? Because they lost to the Giants in the Superbowl.

You can argue differently, but you know where I stand and I believe most pro players would agree with me. Otherwise whey do they want to play for teams that have a chance to win it all? Why did Lebron sign in Miami?

Didn't the Braves run into attendance problems even all of their great regular seasons?

To all Pens fans {of which I am truly one}: This here group of Flyers are coming to play folks. They will not back down, roll-over, or play-dead for the Pens.

That being said, I expect the Pens to raise their level of effort to the max!

Of course, I do want them to win the series and march on toward another Stanley Cup.

Should be a great series.

:)

Agree they won’t roll over, but of all the playoff teams in the east, they seem like the least likely to advance. This is not a Pitt/Philly disrespectful jab, but rather an observation. The #9 team in the east had more wins than they did. Maybe the Flyers best days are ahead, but their present isn’t ready for a long playoff push.

That makes way too much sense...it's more fun to believe that a team was "avoiding" another team.

Sounds good!

Sincerely,
A Philadelphian and lifelong Phila fan who thinks youve has too much caffeine.

Columbus and Jersey knew their possible opponents. If they weren't avoiding the Pens they made it very clear that they weren't doing everything they could to try to get that matchup. In the NHL players don't rest at the end of the year. Look at teams that already had everything clinched and how they played on Saturday. Resting their players when they have at least 4 days off coming up--come on. Let's be real

I'm interested to see if the Pens can take it to another level in the playoffs, giving top attention to the little things for each game. They definitely appear to have some holes this year, including some mental lapses, but it could be a case of a veteran team treading water until the Playoffs. At least I hope that is the case. Flyers got some nice talent and I expect this to be a good series.

There's a difference between teams that had everything clinched a few weeks ago to a team that clinched the second to last game of the season.

The Devils were riding Kinkaid (a backup goalie to start the season) pretty hard and their stars all had several pressure filled games in a row.

Considering they are about to have another pressure game (game one of the playoffs on the road) don't you think playing Schneider and resting their stars made sense?

Should they have played lights out and risked an injury just so they could match you internet tough guys in toughness so they could play the Pens?

Resting made 100% sense.

Like I said. Check the records. No caveat required. Anyone who doubts the Flyers as one of the top all time franchises in the NHL is only lying to themselves (I guess you need that trait to bed down with some of those Pittsburgh women - woof tough sledding!!).

It ain’t bragging if it’s true!!! That is the real history, not this “let me pick an arbitrary line so that my stats make me feel good” crap. And news for ya, the tide is turning. Pens probably win this series, but in the not too distant future, the Flyers will be back on top, where they belong. And the Pens will be playing to the half empty barn, because Pens fans are nothing but lousy front runners. Dilly Dilly, Philly Philly. The Roaring 20s are already here. Another title this spring to go with the two belts we have already won in the past few months will look real nice. Philadelphia, the class of the state - has been since before the country was born!! Wooooo!!!!!

That is a good point about the wins, but that is a limited picture. Have you checked the Flyers record over the last 56 games? 34-15-7. They started with half dozen rookie and second year players and have played the last 20 with non-NHL goaltending (Mrazek?). Pens better get while the getting is still good for them. Once Carter Hart joins the men’s league - lights out!!!

I think Pens won the series. But my wife tells me I am wrong all the time. Lol!!!
