Stanley Cup Playoffs: Flyers vs. Pens Round 1

The only people who think of the Flyers as NHL royalty are from Philadelphia. That's it.

And those are the only opinions that count!! Everyone else on here is typing so they have something for their spank bank!!! You are clearly one of the flock from Piggsburgh that thinks hockey started in 1990. Check the records, Flyers are one of the best!!!

you have to consistently win championships to be royalty. Flyers aren't royalty. They may beat the Pens but they aren't winning a Cup this year

This kind of cockiness always makes me laugh. Where they belong? They haven't been on top of the NHL in 43 years, man. If a Detroit Red Wings fan said that Detroit will be back on the top of the NHL in a year or two, where they belong, or a Chicago fan said this, or even a Habs fan then it would make sense.

Yep, maybe this is where they belong:

Pens in 3.

This is like having a Bye and much needed. Just have to hope the Flyers don’t play like knuckleheads once they know they’re done(which might be already)

Flyers are more like the Atlanta Braves of hockey....built for the regular season, but choke when it counts. I’d include the Buffalo Bills, but at least the fly-guys won it all way back when. Regardless, if that’s what royalty is, then I’ll take the peasant Penguins and all their hardware all day/any day.

It's 7-0. Cindy Crysby has a hat trick. Tells us more about these Flyers. Also, please insult me more for being from "Piggsburgh." I'll be busy counting the Stanley Cups the Piggsburgh Penguins have won.

I believe pitt won a MNC more recently than the flyers won a Stanley Cup.

When/where you want to push them around?? I can arrange a meeting. Yeah, I thought so. You obviously don't know when to shut it down. LOL

LOL at you the tough guy and your tough hockey team. Philly has some talent but their fans are morons.

Pens need a quick series against the Flyers if they are going to make a deep run this year, otherwise they will have no legs in the later rounds. The Pens have played 49 playoff games the last 2 years, which is the most playoff games over a 2 year stretch in NHL history.

If they can win the first two in Pittsburgh, I like the Pens in 5. They have played their best hockey this season after 3-4 day layoffs, and have seemed to have their legs again after these breaks. The Pens also played the most back-to-back games this season of any team and were typically God awful in the 2nd game.

I don’t see them making it past the Eastern Conference final, but they looked dead several times last year and managed to gut out another Championship. Just too much poor play from their defense (too many odd man rushes and bad break downs) to think they have a chance this year, but hey, that’s why you play and why there is nothing better in the world than Stanley Cup Playoff hockey.

Kinda lame point. Like half the team doesn’t represent the point you just made. Murray played a bit more than half the games. Letang played Zero last year. Now that I think about it only 2 of our 4 Centers were with Pens the last two years. Only 2 Defensive-men played heavy minutes for the Pens the last two years. You may want to rethink how devastating your point is to the Pens.

No need to re-think anything, especially when every single Pens beat writer and national hockey writer has been saying the exact same thing. Crosby, Kessel, Malkin, Hornqvist, Hagelin, Dumoulin, Maata, Schultz have all played a ton of hockey and they've played a lot more hockey than any opponent they will face - that's half the team right there, and the guys who get the most ice time because of their skill level. The Pens were absolutely running on fumes in the Ottawa series last year and gutted it out against Nashville. You will see the impact in round 3 against TBL or Boston if the Pens make it that far. Not saying they can't win a series against those teams, but they will look significantly less fresh than whoever their 3rd round opponent is just like they like they did last year against the Sens.

Reminds me of the banner I saw in North Station in Boston a number of years ago--huge (a story or more high) banner of a Flyers player with the wording "You wouldn't want your sister to date one".... I'm a Flyers fan but I got a good laugh out of it. Of course, that year, the Flyers got the last laugh--as it was the year they won that playoff series down 0-3.

Sure the Flyers have better overall records and such for the two teams 50 years but the first 20 were embarrassing for the Pens. What have the Flyers done since the Pens actually started giving a damn?

I have no clue why anyone would be at all worried about Crosby, Kessel, Geno, Hornqvist, Dumolin, Maata or Schultz. They're all playing great hockey right now. I don't care how much hockey they've played the past 2 years. They all elevate their games.

All teams want quick series early on but to think the Pens can't beat two teams that haven't proven they can win big series is laughable if we're being honest.

Thinking those 7 aren't in good enough shape to withstand long series because of the past 2 years...smh

Oh. So the Pens didn’t give a damn. That’s what it was - LOL!!! okay. That’s pathetic, even for a Pens fan.
Enjoy your day, it is soon at an end. The aflyers are taking their lumps now with their kids and bad contracts. Learning lessons and getting better. I guess the Pens won’t give a damn in a couple years too. Back to playing in front of 12 thousand.

One thing - can you at least get some god looking people to sit in the front rows?? What is there a 200 lb min limit in the women that go to the games?

So the 5 Pens cups to 2 for the Flyers doesn't dig at you just a little?
Not at all. That fact bothers you now, doesn’t it!!

Flyers have been to more finals, more everything. They ran into some all time great teams there and it is what it is. Pens have been opportunistic in their trips. Kudos. But no. I know all sports all cyclical, there are ups and downs. And the Flyers time is coming.

Most FLYER fans are morons. I'm a Philly fan and follow the Flyers but am not a die hard. I knew coming into this series, they have/had little to know chance against the Pens. Real (if you wanna called them that) Flyer fans think they are going to win the Cup every single year and are clueless IMO. I tend to side with Mike Missanelli in that regard.

OK if you are going to talk NHL royalty since 1988(30 years) the Pittsburgh Penguins have
Been to the playoffs 24 times
Lost 3 times in the conference finals
Played in 6 Stanley Cup Finals
Have won 5 Stanley Cups

The Philadelphia Flyers
Been to the playoffs 20 times
Lost 5 times in the Conference finals
Played in 2 Stanley Cup Finals
Won zero Stanley Cups

If there is NHL Royalty in the State of PA it comes from Pittsburgh..

Yea in other words the Flyers havent done shit in 30 years and in any meaningful time distinction the Pens have proven to be a much greater team than them.

That was embarrassing. They looked like they were drunk. Pens clearly out-skated and out-hustled a listless looking Flyers team. Send the entire Flyers squad to Allentown for the Calder Cup playoffs and bring the entire Phantoms squad up for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Isn’t it always the little brother who jumps up and down trying to get big brother’s attention only to have big brother just flick him to the side? Yeah, that’s Nitwit in this thread.

If that wasn't a performance to get a head coach fired then I don't know what is. Hakstol needs to go yesterday.

It's pretty bad when even this guy got to chime in:

Never said they are not in good enough shape and I never said I don't think the Pens can't beat either of those two teams. But you're lying to yourself if you don't think the elite players on Tampa or Boston aren't picking up a step, or two, or three simply because they have fresher legs. Fresh legs = more speed = getting to more loose pucks = more puck possession = winning (on average). The was the formula that won the Pens the cup in 2016. That formula didn't hold last year, but fortunately Fleury/Murray were superb in net to make up for the Pens lack of puck possession and shots. The Pens out-shot everyone in 2016. They were out-shot 50% of the time last year. Why do you think that is? Because they were tired! Still good enough to win, but don't think the prior year didn't have an impact. There's a reason why it took a team 20 years to go back-to-back.

Seems like you have fallen into the same trap as the national media with regards to Philly fans in general. You have generalized, based on a few foolish diehards. Or maybe you have actually interviewed thousands upon thousands of Flyer fans to arrive at that conclusion.

Funny that you cite Missanelli since a few weeks ago he was saying that "this team has the feel of a Cup team". Even his buddy and king of Flyer fans, Myrtetus, has repeatedly acknowledged this year that the Flyers aren't ready to win a cup right now.

I live 15 minutes from Wells Fargo Center. I know what I know based on who I associate with and what I hear in Philadelphia. TBH I havent listened to Missanelli in months and I think that Myrtetus is a dope who only knows Flyer hockey, not sure what he said about this particular team. His general knowledge is abysmal.

Ok, let’s check the records. The Flyers and Pens both came into existence in the same year....1967. Since 1967 the Flyers have won two Cups 74 and 75. Since 1968 (or to indulge you, since 1991) the Pens have won five Cups (91, 92, 09, 17 and 18). How that equates to the Flyers being “one of the best” based on “the records,” I guess only you can answer. Look, the Flyers are a terrific team this year and a longstanding franchise, and I am sure they will come back strong in the next game, but your post makes no sense. End of discussion. Have a nice day.

Long way to go. Still. Anyone who doesn't see that the Penguins are prohibitive favorites ain't seeing what I'm seeing. The Penguins have the best player in the world, playing like the best player in the world, and a solid nucleus besides. The Flyers goaltending is just not at the level you need to compete in the Stanly Cup Playoffs. It's pretty much been that way for a long time.

One of the best 2 (or 3) hockey teams in PA?...sure. Oh, and if Pitt fans think hockey started in 1990 then Philly believes it ended in 1976.

And “Piggsburgh”?? Really??!!? Get your crayons out...naptime is over.
