Stanley Cup Playoffs: Flyers vs. Pens Round 1

I watched that game yesterday, and it is going to leave a mark. It reminded me of a game the Tribe had when they were exiting their good years with Omar and Loften. In a playoff game, they lost something like 18-3 and Kenny Loften broke his shoulder. It was such a beatdown. The Tribe said all the right things but that era was over. I recall the Steelers losing on a last minute turnover against the Chiefs (IIRC). And that era was over.

That was such a beatdown, I just don't know how Philly comes back. If the Pens score first in game two, it would be a shock for philly to come back.

Never said they are not in good enough shape and I never said I don't think the Pens can't beat either of those two teams. But you're lying to yourself if you don't think the elite players on Tampa or Boston aren't picking up a step, or two, or three simply because they have fresher legs. Fresh legs = more speed = getting to more loose pucks = more puck possession = winning (on average). The was the formula that won the Pens the cup in 2016. That formula didn't hold last year, but fortunately Fleury/Murray were superb in net to make up for the Pens lack of puck possession and shots. The Pens out-shot everyone in 2016. They were out-shot 50% of the time last year. Why do you think that is? Because they were tired! Still good enough to win, but don't think the prior year didn't have an impact. There's a reason why it took a team 20 years to go back-to-back.

Who on Boston and Tampa have proven they are elite players in the post season?
I don't think "being tired" mattered at all last year

OK if you are going to talk NHL royalty since 1988(30 years) the Pittsburgh Penguins have
Been to the playoffs 24 times
Lost 3 times in the conference finals
Played in 6 Stanley Cup Finals
Have won 5 Stanley Cups

The Philadelphia Flyers
Been to the playoffs 20 times
Lost 5 times in the Conference finals
Played in 2 Stanley Cup Finals
Won zero Stanley Cups

If there is NHL Royalty in the State of PA it comes from Pittsburgh..
Bingo!

I'm not sure what you mean by elite considering most players don't score at the same level in the post-season as they did in the regular season. Boston still has some core players from their 2012-3 run to the Stanley Cup finals when they smothered the Pens defensively. The team this year is better offensively. Bergeron isn't a great scorer, but he scores while shutting down the opposition. Tampa still has some core players from when they played in the Stanley Cup finals and would expect Stamkos and Kucherov to be better. And Kucherov was pretty good in their 2014-5 run. Hedman should be better too.

Most FLYER fans are morons. I'm a Philly fan and follow the Flyers but am not a die hard. I knew coming into this series, they have/had little to know chance against the Pens. Real (if you wanna called them that) Flyer fans think they are going to win the Cup every single year and are clueless IMO. I tend to side with Mike Missanelli in that regard.

Last nights game was weird in that like 4 or 5 of the goals were freaky bounces and deflections. Flyers definately had good chances and will score going forward. They better tighten up and stop going out of their way to hit because Pens transition game will quickly end this series. Flyers gotta have the game tomorrow or this may be a five game series.

No need to re-think anything, especially when every single Pens beat writer and national hockey writer has been saying the exact same thing. Crosby, Kessel, Malkin, Hornqvist, Hagelin, Dumoulin, Maata, Schultz have all played a ton of hockey and they've played a lot more hockey than any opponent they will face - that's half the team right there, and the guys who get the most ice time because of their skill level. The Pens were absolutely running on fumes in the Ottawa series last year and gutted it out against Nashville. You will see the impact in round 3 against TBL or Boston if the Pens make it that far. Not saying they can't win a series against those teams, but they will look significantly less fresh than whoever their 3rd round opponent is just like they like they did last year against the Sens.

Dude did you actually read and comprehend what I posted? I posted actually facts. So you can read in 3 places that 2+2=5 and that doesn’t make it right. You named 7 players. Not even half of the team. 3 or 4(#s 87, 71, 72 and 81) of them you listed can play as much as needed for 10 years and it wouldn’t matter. They’re world class players. That’s what they do. So I get your arguement.......when/if Pens lose it’s because they are tired. Cool.

Literally every single hockey writer, broadcaster, hockey media outlet on the planet has been talking about the Penguins fatigue level being a factor that could impact how deep they go for several months now. NHL Network, NBCSN, CBC, Post-Gazette, Trib, Athletic, Yahoo sports just to name the outlets where I’ve read and/or watched content discussing their fatigue level as a result of playing the most playoff games over 2 years in NHL history.

You don’t have to agree and I could honestly care less if you do. But I share the same opinion with these folks who are paid to follow hockey for a living every single day of their lives. So maybe you’re the Einstein here and everyone else is clueless?

This Pens team is also drastically different from the 2012-2013 team, and so are the Bruins. The Bruins went through a total rebuild since then. That was 5 years ago. I wouldn't look at that series and try to extrapolate what would happen here in 2018 based on those results.

No doubt fatigue will be a factor, as will competitiveness in terms of wanting to cement their legacies in 3-peat fashion. If that competitiveness is enough to ward off the fatigue, then there’s no reason why they can’t be in the mix come June.

Bruins won’t get by Tampa, and may yet not get by Toronto. Rask will eventually do something Rask-y and open the floodgates for one of those 2 opponents. After that, lights out for the B’s.

Not sure what your point is, but experience is beneficial in the playoffs. All three teams have players with playoff success (if success defined by making it to the finals). Even the Pens had to lose once to figure it out. So did the Oilers before their reign.

Funny how all these delusional Pens fans are no where to be found tonight. Hartzie making himself look like a jackass never gets old.

Where are chickenshits like @GregInPitt, @john4psu, and @Nit16 tonight?

Good effort by the Flyers tonight.

Flyers won fair and square sir.

Hartzie, and I missed the play, has a right to be mad. I will have to look at the tape.

Pens weren’t going to sweep Philly. That said, I figured they’d be up 2-0 after tonight. No panic buttons yet...not with the experience on this team. Pens in 6.

Bulls hit. Someone here said Pens in 3. You are so full of it. The Pittschirpers have puckered sphincters now. Lovin it. Btw - everyone that told me I don’t know hockey when I told you Brassard is done - he has three goals more than me over the last 20 games!!!

Flyers win this series in six and maybe even five. Pens victory in game 1 was a fluke and woke the Flyers up. The Pens will be on their heels the rest of the way. On to the second round for the orange and black.

I said it in another thread about this series, and i'll say it again. The win tonight took away the biggest advantage the pens had: home ice. They're GREAT in their barn, but not so much on the road, and the wells fargo center is no joke in the playoffs. Elliott got much-needed confidence tonight too after not playing for 2 months. and the Pens D is pretty weak. This flyers team is so up and down though, that if they play the way they're capable, they can win this series. Regardless, like i said at the beginning of the playoffs, with the youth on this flyers team, i'm just glad they made the playoffs. anything else is bonus.

GREAT to see konecny and patrick get goals. BIG for their confidence. Konecny is a freaking spark plug...

Game 1 was a bad idea for the pens. 4-0 or 5-0 is a sound beating. Crosby getting a hat trick and losing 7-0 is bound to piss some folks off. Flyers circled the wagons... if they can keep getting in hornqvist's head and playing his temper, that would be great.

We got a series now boys...

Flyers win this in six. Possibly even five. Game 1 was a fluke. On to the second round for the orange and black. Pens will get blown out in game 3 and be on the ropes by game 4. I would not be surprised if it is not even competitive from this point forward. The run is done for the Pens.

Whoever said Pens in 3 (assuming he meant 3 + game 1) was wrong. Not sweating a thing...this team has shit the bed against better teams than Philly over the past couple seasons. I’m sure they’ll be over this one before their collective heads hit the pillows.

Chuckling at all the Flyer fans here puffing their chest out for winning a game with 19 shots.

Great game but the chances of you winning the series went from 0% to 5%.

By this time next week the Pens will only be worried about their tee times. The series is over. Flyers roll from here.

You need to stick to your pathetic pre-occupation with the Lair and stay out of "grown up" discussions. We're all chuckling at your child-like obsession with that board.

Your chances of acting like an adult is still 0%.

So I lost credibility because I made a joke the other night (which was born out of a relatively accurate analogy)? Ah, flyers fans...brilliant as usual.

Yes, you did lose credibility. Convince me otherwise. Your prediction was horrible. BTW it was a very lame joke, especially considering your goalie's performance tonight. Ah, pens fans... brilliant as usual!

What!!!? Was at the game. Philly did a great job tonight. Played counter puncher and got the win. It’s the NHL geek. 8th seeds can win the Cup. Act like you’ve been there before.

@Lion8286 this was my post from Thursday. Are all Flyers fan as retarded as you?

Most talking heads spit out general stats. Who gives a rats ass about what some idiot from St Louis or NY says about the Pens. I’m not saying you didn’t read it. I’m saying it’s not accurate and I established facts that prove your point is irrelevant for over half the team. Talking heads get paid to create narratives. I’ve had season Tix since 1989. Line them all up and most couldn’t name half of the team without their game day notes and producer driven talking points. You realize Murray started 6 games against the Senators and 6 games against Nashville last year right. You realize 2 of our 4 Centers weren’t with the Pens the last two years right? You realize like 4 of our 6 Defensivemen either we’re in minors, on another or were hurt. LeTang didn’t play one playoff game last year. A couple wingers that played tonight had either no role or a minor role the last two years. This shouldn’t be difficult for you to ignore the Fake News because i just gave you the facts. Explain to me again why LeTang is tired haha. Again over half of the team didn’t play in the playoff games your point(Fake News) is trying to establish. If the Flyers win 4 games they are the better team this year. Absolutely nothing to do with Pens being fatigued LOL.
