Stevens Transfer Portal

Outside of Ohio State in 2016, what games did Penn State win with Trace that we’re were underdogs?

In 2016:
Maryland was favored by 2, we won 38-14

Wisconsin was favored by 2.5, we won 38-31

The issue is his injury. How can any coach promise any player a starting position coming off an injury?
I’m sure he didn’t like he didn’t promise Stevens the starting job last spring either.

Firstly, there’s a world of difference between a linebacker and the QB. The QB touches the ball every play and runs the offense. Secondly, how do you know there was a better option than Farmer? There may have been younger and more talented players, but that doesn’t mean they understood the defense and were ready to step in and play.
If there weren't better options, PSU is in a world of hurt. I think it was clearly proven on the field by end of App St. game that there were.

Yep.

And in 1,000 more meaningful ways, the two situations are very much NOT the same :)

So?
Ok...care to provide an example? I did not say it was right or wrong...just that the standards appear different. But it is all speculation until you hear from both Franklin and Stevens and judge truthfulness if stories do not match.

I’m sure he didn’t like he didn’t promise Stevens the starting job last spring either.

I acknowledge I am speculating, but what was the reason Tommy did not leave last year? There also has to be a reason the Stevens family is so adamant this year. Do you think Franklin told Tommy that Clifford was the starter? If he was told it would be open competition last year, why not transfer then?

Good thing the transfer portal wasn’t around when Tom Brady played or he would have never learned the value of outworking the other guy, doing what it takes to earn and keep the starting job, and playing with a chip on your shoulder.

Because he probably thought he had a good chance to earn the starting job last year, but now he sees how Clifford has progressed and isn’t quite as confident.

Have no idea what point you are making. My point is that Farmer was given a year of starts and snaps out of loyalty but Stevens was not afforded the same luxury. And Stevens’ record as a player is far superior to Farmer.

Not really. Stevens was behind a better qb. LB depth was not there. Other than freshman who also looked lost there were not many options.

We’ll never know.....but I wonder how much of this drama was driven by Tommy and how much was driven by Tommy’s father.

Wondering if either or both felt he could have played last Sat but resented Franklin for not letting him play.....

Perhaps also some lingering resentment for being in a 51/49 competition and eventually realizing the winner was given the job for three years?

We’ll also never know how last year AND this year would have played out on the field if Tommy had been 100% healthy last year. (I think last year’s O & Lion scheme would have been much more successful and diverse using his healthy athleticism.)

Sad that this had to end this way for everyone involved.....although the story really won’t end until 1/2020.

There were several other linebackers on the roster that played there in high school and acquitted themselves well in addition to Parsons. My only point was that Farmer started games of loyalty. Certainly was not play on the field. Tommy played QB light years better than Farmer ever played linebacker.

[/QUOTE]

Which linebackers? Other than freshman who were also lost there was not much depth at lb.

He was the better QB, but he got put on the bargain bin because Lloyd caved to the Michigan fans clamoring for their local savior and most NFL teams thought there was something wrong with him. I wish they would have had the transfer portal and he had jumped on it and gone somewhere closer to home. Then he couldn't have thrown for 2 late TDs to beat us in 1999. :)

Did they ever name the student involved with the Lasch incidents?

First of all, Trace’s bad decision list the Pitt game. And yes, PSU were underdogs, but certainly not less talented than Pitt. Outside of Ohio State in 2016, what games did Penn State win with Trace that we’re were underdogs? I can think of a number that we lost - one as recent as our very last game against Kentucky. Kentucky for goodness sake! And then losses to putrid Michigan State teams.
Uh, Wisconsin for 200 alex

Sigh. Keep moving the bar. Now it’s just your opinion instead of actual facts. I’m done with you.
You don’t think we have better talent than Maryland? If not, please exit stage right! Because if you are holding out for elite, Maryland isn’t even average!

There were a number of options. And all we know is that Trace was Franklin’s guy. Time will tell if he was better. Big games over last three years were won by Saquon, Defense, and special teams. Trace played hard and we’ll but failed when we needed him most.

Well, they “went” to him at the Iowa game and he rescued that game and probably salvaged something from a disappointing season.

agree and it was obvious he was rescuing that game, and then Trace rushes back into the game hurt.

"We couldn’t wait for that process to go on until August when this is Tommy’s last shot."

Poor kid. Falling from that tree has left him ill prepared for life. Honestly, I hope he goes to Pitt. Could’ve been great in this offense. Doesn’t want to compete then oh well.

Stevens can't afford to go into the fall not knowing whether or not he's the starter. He needs to know now, or soon. So he's in the portal looking for a starting job. It's not bad coaching to have an open competition. It's just unfortunate for a 5th year senior who has done everything to earn the spot (except maybe being the best QB on the roster).

Trace was a 2 plus year starter when he got hurt. There is a big difference.

perhaps but Trace was not the better QB for much of last year even with TS less than 100%. JF offense does not work without a serious run threat QB. that is why Hack was such a poor fit.

WHen he went 2/4 for 27 yards and ran 5 for 18 yards and a TD? Man, what a game!

I dont think that is fair. Steven's has sat behind mcsorley for years while mcsorley piled up accolades. His dad is right honestly, if he waits until August and Franklin names Clifford the starter(knowing Clifford has 3 years) then Steven's graduates college football having never taken his gun out of the holster. If you have NFL ambitions, you cant do that. He needs to put something on film, even at the FCS level if he must. He really should have transferred last year, cant make the same mistake twice.

If he’s not good enough to beat out Clifford then football isn’t his future, going somewhere else doesn’t change that. Especially since wherever he goes won’t have the talent this team does.

So, yea, it’s fair. His dad is a dope. The exact QB Dad Fitz went off about on his pod last year.

So by your logic, if you cant beat out the starter at your current school, the you can't be good enough to win the position and excel somewhere else? Baker Mayfield may disagree with you and many others.

#7 was lost the entire season
We’d been better off playing 4-2-5 with 36& 6 then having him on the field in anything other than a ST situation

Don’t mistake me for thinking Farmer was good. He wasn’t. But neither was Parsons for certainly the first half of the season. I would bet if you looked at tape and graded them on being in the proper position, Farmer would outscore Parsons by quite a bit. Understandably, Parsons looked lost and unsure quite a bit. Hopefully he comes into his sophomore season ready to make a major impact. He has tools to work with but he has a long way to go to put them to effective use.

“He feels like every day from here on out is an audition for the NFL,” Tom Stevens told the CDT.

"He’s a firm believer that he’s going to land on his feet, and that’s the light at the end of the tunnel for him. He’s in a bad place right now mentally, having to make a decision like that. But he’s going to be better for it. ... He wishes things were different. He really does.”

** not an easy decision for TS ...

Graded out better at being in proper position.... maybe.

But it’s not all that relevant when a player can’t make a play even when in proper position. And it was clear that opposing coaches were aware

I’d rather play a kid who may be out of position it can at least recover and make a play... all while gaining valuable experience

Farmers continued playing time after week 1 was baffling

But yeah, not quite sure what that has to do with Stevens lol

Screw Stevens, we are debating subpar linebacker play from last season!!!

In theory, I agree with you. But it’s a fine line between playing a guy who is more athletic to get him experience and playing that guy at the right times to understand what is going on and make the greatest impact in limited time. I honestly think that playing Parsons much more than he was played would have been detrimental to his development.
Alright, back to hand wringing over the backup QB/first team Lion transferring out of the program.

This isn’t like Bakers situation at all. I believe he was a underclassman. This isn’t Matt Cassel behind Palmer and Leinert either. If Stevens can’t win this job then his football career is over, so this move is ridiculous. TBH, I was in Stevens court. I thought he would be the guy this year and be very good, but clearly he doesn’t think so.

https://247sports.com/college/penn-state/Article/REPORTS-Penn-State-football-Tommy-Stevens-wont-return-Transfer-Portal-father-says-131327374/

Penn State quarterback Tommy Stevens entered the NCAA Transfer Portal Wednesday. Now comes news that Stevens and his family have apparently ruled out a possible return to Happy Valley.

On Thursday, Stevens’ father (who is named Tom) told The Athletic that his son was definitely heading elsewhere because, with only one season of eligibility remaining, he could not risk the chance of losing the starting PSU quarterback job to redshirt sophomore Sean Clifford.

"We don’t feel like the job was given to anybody," Tom Stevens told The Athletic. "We couldn’t wait for that process to go on until August when this is Tommy’s last shot.”

Tom Stevens also told the Centre Daily Times, “Honestly, I don’t think that he’ll be welcome back at this point if he wanted to come back."

A fifth-year senior, the younger Stevens spent three seasons playing behind record-setting Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley and figured to me the man to beat for the No. 1 job in spring practice after McSorley exhausted his eligibility. However, after undergoing surgery on an unspecified foot injury in December, Stevens wound up being limited in spring ball. He did not scrimmage live.

That cleared the way for Clifford to get the bulk of the No. 1 reps. Though Stevens participated in skeleton work and other drills, he watched from behind the offense during live scrimmage action.

Stevens did not play in Saturday’s Blue-White Game. Afterward, head coach James Franklin said there would be a competition for the top job in the preseason, when Stevens was expected to be cleared for full contract.

"Tommy’s situation — we were put in a tough spot because he had an injury that made it difficult," Franklin said. "We want to be able to name the starter as soon as we possibly can, but we are not ready to do that right now and it’s going to need to be more of a true competition.”

In his Penn State career, the versatile Stevens hit on 24 of 41 passes for 304 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He had 76 carries for 506 yards and eight scores, as well as 14 catches for 62 yards and two TDs. He is a graduate who will be eligible to play immediately if he transfers to another FBS program.

With Stevens apparently leaving, Clifford projects as the starter. He appeared in four game last season, hitting on 5 of 7 passes for 195 yards and two scores. That included the longest touchdown pass in Penn State history — a 95-yarder to Daniel George.

Redshirt freshman Will Levis is now the likely second-teamer. He received the bulk of the second-team reps in the spring but has yet to play in an actual game.

True freshmen Ta'Quan Roberson and Michael Johnson Jr. — a pair of early enrollees — will be in the mix for the third-team job.

The"like" button appeared a few years ago. He's been a member since 2004, 10 years before you junior. Think before you post

I've been around since the plotit.com days, so nice try with the condescension. I am not wrong...team Stevens wanted him to be named starter, they didn't get it, so they are taking their ball and going home.

Stop repeating the "can't win this job" shit, because it's entirely possible that Franklin is basically writing this season off as 12-13 scrimmages while he waits for the rest of the upperclassmen, who are quite friendly with the guys who left, to graduate/retire. Something has clearly been rotten since late last season, and this coach could be backing himself into a corner.

I've been around since the too but that has nothing to do with his amount of likes which was the point I was making
