Super 32

It was horrible. You can see the ref was definitely getting pissed at Johnson. Although if you watch the whole match, they were each throwing some heavy hands and hands to the head/face. Ley drew blood once with his hand to Paniro's face. Then the ref awarded Ley a point for Paniro's hand to the face. Right after that, Ley bull rushed Johnson off the mat and into the spectators. No call or warning there. At the next restart, Johnson immediately got in on the single, took it high and executed a foot sweep just as Ley tried to back flip. The ref stopped it and called the illegal move (slam). I hope he is embarrassed today, but I somehow doubt it. Great way for the kid to grab a third place finish. Wrestling doesn't always teach good life lessons.
Just watched the full video. Awful. Witnessed a similar thing in high school in the blood round to go to the state tournament. Wrestler A is winning in the third and is on top. Wrestler B stands. Wrestler A hits a very basic lift and bump mat return. Wrestler B attempts a horrible standing granby, lands right on his head, takes injury time and the win to go to state. Wrestled the rest of the tournament just fine.

Also, personal pet peeve. The assistant official who kept coming on the mat during the argument wore this matching officials strip mask and never once had it covering his nose during the entire tournament. Not starting a mask argument, but if you're asked to wear it, don't be an idiot and wear it wrong, especially when you're supposed to be an authority.

Jac is plain nasty!!

And just imagine how much better she will get training in the SEM room!

I am a New Yorker, so I am a little biased; but I find it impossible not to love everything about the Bouzakis family and the attitude they bring with them on and off the mat.

Is there any rule in HS wrestling that prevents the coach of the injured wrestler intervening by having the match resume for one second or so and then having his wrestler medical forfeit? I believe the ethical choice in an obvious bad call situation like this one is for the coach of the injured wrestler to have his wrestler injury default rather than take the "All's fair in love and war" position and essentially cheat the other wrestler out of his rightful win. What kind of a message does it send to the injured wrestler? If wrestling is all about building character, I think a coach should make the ethical (in my opinion) decision and not allow his wrestler to accept a tainted win like the one in question. See the attached video for a similar scenario (except the move that injured the wrestler was illegal) that occurred at the 2003 NCAA championship tournament where an eventual individual national championship was on the line. Injury default match

Good stuff, and I agree. I'd like to see more adherence to the Spirit of the Law, vs the Letter of the Law, like all the runners we've been seeing who help someone who's crashed or went the wrong way, get over the finish line.

Super 32 Wrapup on Intermat. Great to listen to CS.

Clay speculates a bit about college destination for Nic Bouzakis. He reiterated that Nic hasn’t released a short list yet. He suspects all the big schools will be in play (PSU, tOSU, OSU, Iowa, Cornell). He also said he wasn’t sure where Nic would fit in at PSU with SVN and Beau there.

@El-Jefe - I’m guessing we could find a way to get that hammer in the lineup, right?

Remember Rob Koll and Realbuto's ethical choice against Ian Miller in the 2015 quarters where the refs scheduled up the score and Miller wrongfully lost? Neither do I. When it comes to winning, ethics goes out the window most of the time.

Yes there is a rule in high school wrestling to cover this situation. Before recovery time expires the injured wrestler or coach can default the match to allow the other wrester to win. The default must be before the recovery time expires.

If he's worried about SVN and Beau being at PSU, we probably wouldn't want him. ;)

At most weights, the hammers have to earn their way into the lineup.

Seriously, our future lineups have a ton of variables, too complex to comprehend right now.

There's another potential angle to our detriment: if the family plays the "if you want Nic, you also have to take Vince" card. Younger bro is a D1 prospect but not Nic at the same stage of his career. As of today, this would be much easier for the schools that don't offer athletic aid. (Though the 2022 offers don't go out today.)

That's one of the worse calls I've ever seen! Also that kid looked just fine and could have wrestled. I bet he would have if not given the penalty point. I hope that ref watched a replay of that match, he should be embarrassed!!!! as should Ley!

The unfortunate part was you could only challenge in the finals and not for 3rd.Had the ref looked at it he would've realized he was wrong.

Yep sad, which one of those wrestlers do you want on your team? I know which one I would want and what coach I would want representing my child! If so badly injured he could have said I will wrestle for 1 more second than I'm going to default.

I don't think he would have. He also called the kid for the most ticky tack hands to the face penalty I've ever seen just a few seconds before this happened. For context, the opponent had a blatant hands to the face earlier in the match that required a stoppage, but only received a warning.

You see this occasionally, rarely fortunately, but sometimes officials just have it out for a guy for some reason (I'll let you speculate why for yourself in this instance). He was looking for every reason possible to hit him with another penalty and didn't seem like a guy who was going to back down.

Was a match that was poorly officiated no doubt about that.

Bouzakis looks like he's very physically mature for his age. He's technically sound but man, he just abuses people out there. SVN, BB, RH, and hell, even Facundo look like doughboys compared him.

Pretty cool that he's so invested in his sister's success. I like that.

I don't think Beau looks like a doughboy, he's ready now as we've seen. I agree with the rest though. I think Alex, once he beefs up is going to be a real problem for people.

I’ll take a wild swag at all of the variables and give a scenario where Bouzakis fits into lineup

I’ll assume the following:
1. Nic Bouzakis moves up to 138 for his senior hs season.
2. Beau beats Verk and goes 149 this season, albeit a bit undersized
3. RBY takes advantage of extra year of eligibility and wrestles at 33 this year and the next two years
4. Nick Lee goes 41 this year. He takes extra year next year and moves to 49 and Beau goes 41 for 21-22 season.
5. Shayne Van Ness redshirts for 21-22 season.
6. Figs commits to PSU but redshirts in 21-22
7. Bottom of lineup for 21-22: 125 Howard, 133 RBY, 141 Beau Bartlett , 149 N Lee, 157 Berge?
8. Bouzakis commits and redshirts his first season, 22-23 and wrestles at 149 his redshirt season.
9. For 22-23 season Figs and SVN enter lineup, Nick Lee departs. Bouzakis and Howard redshirt (if Robbie is allowed to redshirt after free season). Lower lineup: 125 Figs, 133 RBY, 141 Beau, 149 Van Ness, 157 Berge
10. For 23-24 season, RBY and Berge depart, Howard moves to 33 and Bouzakis moves in to lineup at 49 or 57. Lower lineup for 23-24: 125 Figs, 133 Howard, 141 Beau, 149 SVN or Bouzakis, 157 SVN or Bouzakis.

I made a ton of assumptions
1. We land Figs and Bouzakis
2. Lee, RBY take extra year
3. Berge is healthy, takes extra year and can stay at 57
4. Robbie can hold down 125 for 2 seasons, then can redshirt before moving to 33 when RBY departs
5. RBY can stay at 33
6. Either SVN or Bouzakis grows in to a 157
7. Beau can move down and hold 41 after going at 49

True, and also proves the complexity -- this is just ONE scenario.

BTW, full mea culpa: I need to retract previous comments about Bouzakis being defensive. I've seen more matches against good competition, and have changed my mind.

He looks a lot like Matt Brown: very heavy hands, sometimes clubbing. Extreme neck wrencher. Elite on top and bottom, elite or very nearly so on feet.

And there are some things he can improve on -- so I don't think he'll hit an early peak. He's gonna be really good in college.

I wonder if we’ll have a defending national champion beat out of a starting spot (at his desired weight) sometime in the next years. That can’t be common.

For those of you that have a FLO account, watch Paniro Johnson get jobbed out of 3rd Place. He has a single and leg sweeps Ley. Then Ley tries a back flip and ends up on his head. Ref calls a slam on Johnson and gets DQ'd. Pitiful... https://www.flowrestling.org/video/6806831-152-lbs-3rd-place-paniro-johnson-pa-vs-jonathan-ley-fl

That was so obviously a wrong call. How can nobody have the Gonads to review it and get it right? Disgusting referee malfeasance. Nobody corrects it? WOW
