Tar Heels beat Minnesota

Link has the box score.

Team was 20-17.

Really wasn't an upset. Everyone expected to win did. Only 'surprises' were Klump over Petry and Staudenmayer over Wanzek. But again not shockers.

Unfortunately Minny not looking like a factor at this point

I wonder JRob's age might be a negative factor in recruiting. He has landed only 3 top-20 recruits the last 4 years, and no Top-10 recruits.

Why is it unfortunate? Coleman Scott was one of PA's finest meanwhile JRob has personally called out our wrestlers and coaches over the years. No sympathy from me and just goes to show he should of been more concerned with the state of his own program instead of taking pot shots at ours. Throw on top of that that Jammen is a Gopher fan, and we should be celebrating this result.

Losing to an ACC team... who could have imagined that? (HINT: Virginia Tech in 2014??)

Not to mention they wrestle like you can "grind out" every win by keeping good position and waiting to shoot until the 3rd period. It's not 1980 any more. That's not a style that grows the spot.

But, Thorn and some others are coming along well. I love watching Tommy scrap.

Bad day to be a Goofer: Lehigh also beat Minny 22-12, with a big upset at heavy offsetting an upset at 133.

125 – Darian Cruz WBF Skylar Petry 1:43 (6-0 Lehigh)
133 – Sam Brancale dec Mason Beckman 4-1 (6-3)
141 – Tommy Thorn dec Randy Cruz 3-0 (6-6)
149 – Laike Gardner MD Miles Patton 12-3 (10-6 Lehigh)
157 – Mitch Minotti dec Brandon Kingsley 4-2 (13-6)
165 – Ryan Preisch dec Dylan Urbach 5-2 (16-6)
174 – Nick Wanzek dec Elliot Riddick 3-2 (16-9)
184 – Nate Brown dec Chris Pfarr 9-5 (19-9)
197 – Brett Pfarr dec John Bolich 7-3 (19-12)
285 – Max Wessell dec Mike Kroells 10-9 (22-12)

Notes:
- Beckman … woof.
- Thorn won on a reversal + RT.
- Such a shame to see Riddick’s immense talent wasted on someone who wrestles like he does.
- Brown’s match was not that close. He gave up a late takedown while going for the MD.
- Wessell scored the first 3 takedowns on Kroells, all in the first, and then got 2 more takedowns in the 3rd to win.

I think Lizak is redshirting, he is wrestling in an open unattached today.

NC State just took the Gophers to the woodshed, yikes:

North Carolina State 31, Minnesota 3
125: Sean Fausz (NCS) dec. Skyler Petry (Minn) 8-6
133: Jamel Morris (NCS) dec. Sam Brancale (Minn) 5-2
141: Kevin Jack (NCS) dec. Tommy Thorn (Minn) 10-4
149: Beau Donahue (NCS) dec. Miles Patton (Minn) 8-4
157: Tommy Gantt (NCS) maj. dec. Brandon Kingsley (Minn) 12-3
165: Max Roshkopf (NCS) dec. Dylan Urbach (Minn) 6-0
174: Nick Hall (NCS) dec. Nick Wanzek (Minn) 8-6
184: Pete Renda (NCS) fall Chris Pfarr (Minn) 3:33
197: Brett Pfarr (Minn) dec. Mike Boykin (NCS) 7-3
285: Nick Gwiazdowski (NCS) dec. Michael Kroells (Minn) 10-6

Jammenz might want to wear an male undergarment under his Jammies tonight .

Nebraska over Lehigh 24-6 Dudley takes down #4 Brown at 184# in OT. Maybe Nebraska is better than I thought.

FLYING TIGER ..couldn't agree with you more ..no sympathy whatsoever for Minnesota ..mostly JRob though ..he was a total asshole a few years ago with the S he said about Frank 'the Tank' ..and of course ..he ate his words a few weeks later ..but I actually dislike Minny more than Iowa ..and have no problem watching their program go down the tubes ..so sad..too bad

Yup, he's always got something to say. Too bad we can't end our losing streak to them this year. We'd annihilate them.

I don't remember what JRob said. Can you remind me?

Let's just say Frank "laughed off" those comments ...

He called Frank out for taking a lunger, and in his defense I think Frank was taking a lunger

So Frank was out of shape all season, then magically in the final two weeks between that match and BigTens, he finally gets in shape and destroys the same opponent. The facts simply do not support the needed a lung time out theory, never has, never will.

I didn't say that, but in that particular match for whatever reason it appeared he was gassed. It is possible (sickness, tough week of practice...etc). I don't know the details, so I could obviously be completely wrong, and it still came off as whiny from jrob

From what I remember, it looked like Frank got hit in the stomach or the nads. I know it's ancient history at this point, but it still annoys me because JRob was in no position to know for sure and considering it was a guy that usually goes all out, he should of gotten the benefit of the doubt, at least by not making a public comment about it.

The G forum has pitchforks in-hand, already. Gonna be a long season, over there.

Yea, I don't know what forum is having a bigger meltdown, the Guillotine or the Dallas Cowboys forum. As a Penn State and Steeler (and Eagles) fan, both are rather entertaining reading, LOL.

the guillotine is not as bad as the HR would be under the same circumstances. Still an entertaining read.

My favorite post was ....reality check 3 gophers 0. That may just stick around a little.

Are you sure about that? I thought you had a proven track record of choking in big duals.
Goofers would not be a big dual this year. UNC, Lehigh, and NC State can't all be wrong.

Jammenz, If you think your fun banter makes me thing you are not worried about the future of Minn wrestling.......wrong. It will be tough to continue your humorous put downs of PSU in about a year or definitely 2....But please continue...You do make me laugh

Mn has two major holes at 165 and 184... With Short out at 49 that is three major holes. B Pfarr and Kroells are the anchors and leaders. Both wrestle aggressive and sometimes that leads to dropping a match giving up sloppy points. Cherry pick MN's lineup as having no offense one more time duster and I will cut you out of all future intel!

Brancale has looked pretty good this season. The length of NC ST's 33 gave him fitz. 125 Petry is young and has shown flashes, Lizak the better option but idk if they redshirt and build for the future. Thorn will be darn good.

Short Kingsley and Wanzek keep showing flashes but leave the fans wanting more. Next year will be much better, but probably still the outside looking in. Wishing ill will is your choice, but as a wrestling fan I always want to see the wrestling power schools among the top.

Penn States lineup is very impressive. You guys should be flying high. Should be a fun year to follow.

To be fair, I countered it with a positive note on Thorn's aggression and action. They were more aggressive than usual last weekend at the Duals, I'll give them that. But overall, I'm not too far off on their stereotypical strategy. And they got thwomped by NC freakin' State. I watched most of the Lehigh dual and was thinking they were still battling, but the NCST matchup must have been horrendous.

I took flack ALL last year on the G. I have every intention of releasing my pent-up aggression on this keyboard this year. Enjoy my two-week absence. It's probably best that I let wounds heal before I get all high and mighty.

125 and 133 we were in the matches but their length trumped us. 141 thorn was leading for probably 5 minutes of the match, lots if good scrambles, Jack put a solid ride on and controlled him to close out the match. 149 is a hole, he competed well considering the mismatch. 157 Gantt looked real good, better wrestler won. 165, see 149. 174 Wanzek almost got stuck, was in a hole fought back but not enough time. 184 is a hole. Pfarr controlled a solid decision, Kroells not on Gwizz level. Overall it was very disappointing, but looking at each match individually a lot more competitive than the final score suggests. Still a whooping but I will take the silver lining cuz it's all I am going to get!!
