I thought, and still do, that CJF's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 in our own territory in the first half, was ludicrous. It smelled like desperation. Was he sending a message to the team?

Some other thoughts I haven't seen covered:
  • We turned the ball over, twice. One was for a TD on the center's bad snap. Not often you win a game when you lose the turnover battle 2 - 0.
  • Just seemed like one of those games. We lose two fumbles...Wiscy fumbles twice and regains all three. If you are keeping track at home, that is five balls on the turf and we don't recover a single one.
  • WTF on reviewing Gesicki's catch?
  • I am not sure I've seen more commercials that during that game. I wasn't keeping track but by the middle of the second quarter, I'd swear there was more commercial time than playing time.
  • The post game, on B1G, was very complimentary and effusive about PSU. Great to see. One guy said he loved TM's "home run" celebration. He pointed to the screen and said "Props to you, Trace McSorley!". Cool. DiNar-dog said that CJF was talking up Trace in the fall tour and before the Temple game.
  • Wiscy's QB played a great game. He made a couple of throws where there was only about a foot window. He ended up being 16-21 passing with a QB rating of 145.8. (Trace was an off the charts 217.6!!!)
  • They had SB with 106 yards rushing but the official stats have him with only 83.
  • Gilikin, two punts with a 49 yard average. Way to contribute!! special teams played great!
  • Clement with 164 yards.
  • The PSU kids, during interviews, were very impressive. To me, the best was Grant Haley....kid has a great voice and could do play by play.
  • Wiscy's kids were great too. Wiscy is the real deal...I like that team and kids. Chyrst was great too, he's not a great speaker but very gracious and complimentary toward PSU. If I had to root for a B1G team outside of PSU, it would probably be Wiscy.
  • I've never seen a kid wear a hoodie under his uniform before. Just interesting.
  • Debbie Downer comment, Irving Charles had a tough game.
  • Chaz Wright had a nice game, considering.

NoT wrong about Franklin going for it twice at mid field, you have a good punter, use you weapon for field position. Those decisions gave Wisconsin a touchdown. The score should have been 14-14 at half time, if no snap over the QB's head. I have no idea why Franklin does this. If you are in the red zone, go ahead and go for it, but otherwise play field position. ( be prepared for incoming from FRTT)

I notice the hoodie thing as well and pointed out to my wife. She asked me why they would wear a hoodie when they are playing indoors. IMO, this is probably a "street" thing. I'm surprised it meets uniform regulations sa someone could grab it and yank the player down from behind potentially causing a serious injury. It would not happen in the NFL.

Re your fourth bullet point: You have seen a preview of the future. Expect to see more commercials during games going forward. There is no conceivable way that Fox and Disney can make money on the broadcasts, paying what they're paying for them, without a significant increase in the number of commercials.

Compliments on the use of FRTT!!!

How does that differ from ludicrously long hair tied into ropes. If I had long hair I would wear a hairnet.

This is why God invented the DVR. 50% of the time, I start the game at halftime and catch up by game's end. This saves me an hour to an hour and a half....and that is a normal game on ESPN 14 or so.

The "go for it" decisions on 4th down were - without even a shadow of a doubt - the right calls.

The "right" call doesn't always work out.....and the "wrong" call doesn't always come back to bite you in the ass.....but the best ANY HC can do is make the right call, knowing that it will improve his team's chances of wining most games.
And those calls - both of them - absolutely improved PSU's chances to win the game......they just didn't work out as far as the execution.

Billy O'Brien was very good this (the greatest example of the BOB era was the "go for it" call on 4th down at the NW 6 yard line, down 11 points - McGloin hit ARob for a TD - - - - but the fan boys and talking heads would have been yapping about all year if it had not been successful)

CJF is also very good at this.

It takes "brains" to understand the right call......and "balls" to make the right call (knowing that the talking heads and the fan-boys are just salivating to excoriate the "blown call" :) )

Why??

Look I love Franklin and support him 100%, but someone needs to explain to me why in the 2nd quarter behind 14 or 21 points you would go for it when in your own territory, especially when you have a good punter.

I really thought, at that point, some of the younger guys on offense were a little shaken. If It was me, I'd play aggressively to try and score a TD, but I try to get to the locker room and regroup. I don't want to give Wiscy more possessions with better field position. Our D held them the second time and we played a good two minute offense (got a little lucky their corner misjudged TM's arm strength) and got a TD before half time.

Some thoughts about your thoughts...

-You are not wrong, it was stupid to go for it on that 4th down.
-Grant Haley impressed me earlier this year when he was made available for interviews. You can tell he is a smart kid. I believe he is majoring in something related to broadcasting?
-Wisky was killing us early with underneath stuff in the passing game. They lack talent but are well coached. Their routes on 3rd down went right to the sticks, which is what you want to see. Personally, I'm surprised we didn't see more screens from them.
-Not that it took an eternity, but Gesicki's catch review should have taken no more than 5 seconds.
-Charles could be a dominating WR... needs to focus more.
-Commercials are always a problem for the championship games and the bowl games. Although, I think they are even worse on Fox than ESPN. I usually DVR the game and start watching in about an hour in so that I can skip commercials. By the end of the game, I usually am just a few minutes behind. For this game I got caught up by the the 2nd or 3rd series in the 3rd. And I even watched all of the pre-game commentary!
-Just one more observation about Fox... I appreciate that they constantly try new things with their broadcasts. The ref cam should be adopted in all games moving forward. Such a great view for replays.

Agree on the seeming number of commercials- I can't remember a game with so many breaks... likewise impressed with the PSU player interviews. This team continues to be really fun to root for.

Also- I really like that UW player Vince Biegel- heck of a player and I thought he handled himself impressively during interviews. Seems like the kind of guy you want on your team- Wisconsin fans should be proud of their program.

My wife and I were trying to figure out whether those two (or three?) Wis DBs actually were wearing hoodies (and during an indoor game?!?!?).

Also, maybe I missed it but was Charles even in the game or targeted anymore after his two drops?

He also had a very good short yardage team...this team, not so much.
We have been stuffed a number of times on 3rd/4th and short this season. With this offense, I would rather put the ball in McSorely's hands than give it to Barkley. Or, I would sub in Robinson who is a better short yardage back.

If you need to have it "explained" to you.....you wouldn't understand anyway.

It can be broken down into simple math - - - - but no one (certainly not sports fans) would actually do that - they'd just rather blather on based on some nebulous "book", or whatever they want to call it.

That's not intended to be"snarky", that's just the way it is.

It's people like you that are going to force Delany into retirement before the next TV deal is negotiated, bless your pointed little heads.

A lot of great points, Obli.

A few notes:
Yeah, the ball was bouncing Wisky's way on those fumbles; would have made things easier to get one or two of those.
Totally agree on the commercial time in the broadcast; about the most I've seen
Wisconsin's QB did have a great game but they just don't have much of a downfield passing game
Gesicki's looked great on the TD and the sideline catch was totally obvious -- replay was silly
Fox gave Barkley's total to include his receiving yards
That touchdown right before the half was yuuuge

I don't agree on the first decision to go for it at that field position. We don't have a great short yardage running set and were having little to no success against Wisky's OL at that point in the game. We had stopped them the previous two drives I believe? No need to potentially put the game on the line at that point in my opinion. Once it backfired, I thought he had to go for it the next time. Again the lack of a short yardage set in those situations hurts us. The bad snap resulting in Wisky TD on third and less than a yard...same problem.

O'Brien did it when he was in the Opponents half of the field.
OBrien did it - almost always - when it made sense to do it.

Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn't .....that is the nature of competitive sports.....but it was almost always the correct decision.
(I remember folks crucifying BOB when he "went for it" from his own end of the field, from midfield, from the "red zone", or anywhere - - - when the play "didn't work".....but that doesn't change the fact that the decision was either right or wrong).

CJF does the same thing

Very few coaches - college or pro - make those calls "better" than either CJF does (the only one I can recall where CJF made a call that was both "wrong", and was "unsuccessful" was the fake punt call in the game at Michigan a few years back), or BOB did.
Urby Meyer is one of the other really good ones in the college game - the guy at Minnesota is one of the worst, and Zook, when he was at Illinois, may have been worse yet .....The Hoodie is one of the best in the NFL

The "right" decision isn't always "successful"....and vice versa.
But it is analogous to a baseball manager - his team needing a big hit at a key time - having two guys on the bench - - - one a career .320 hitter, the other a career .175 hitter
If he opts to go with the .320 hitter, according to the level of "logic" of most sports fans, that is the "wrong" decision 68% of the time :)

On the last Wiscy fumble, believe it was the LaVar-esque strip sack by #11 Bell, I slammed my hand on the living room floor when we didn't recover it. Apologies to my dog and those in the room. (it hurt for 15 minutes!).

That review of Gesicki's catch was very odd. Seems there was an official right there watching and gotta wonder if he was watching the play or checking out the cheerleaders.

Well, a conspiracy theorist would think that Wiscy was a little shaken at that point. PSU was going to go to the line and run another play. But I thought the game was pretty well officiated. I didn't like the two roughing calls but can't argue with either one. There was some holding that wasn't called. On a key third and one, PSU jumped but you can see the center flicks his fingers on the ball (which should have been called against Wiscy). But overall, I don't have any real complaints.

A year from now we will all be in agreement that Charles is the best receiver on the team and one of the best to ever play at PSU. Godwin is great. I really like the guy. He should go into the draft this year. He may not get playing time next year.

  • Two turnovers AND two misses on 4th down. Those are like turnovers.
  • I love McSorley but I can't stand his salute.
  • I feel great for Haley. He fumbled a couple of kicks as an underclassman that cost us games. Nice to see him with a couple of big plays this year that won us games. Agree, he was an impressive interview.
  • Barkley is another impressive interview. I know I'm an old fuddy duddy but I hate the earrings (how do they play with those?). Love that he's not full of tattoos. The kid acts mature beyond his age and has a million dollar smile. I don't know what kind of student he is but he seems like the kind of kid I'd hire in a minute.
  • Agree about Wisky players and Chryst. First class.
  • Charles had a tough game but I think he'll be a great WR for PSU.
  • Cabinda also had a tough game. He got caught covering a RB or WR a few times and couldn't do it. But he's been a super player for PSU. BTW he's also a great interview. I remember when he flipped as a 3* from Syracuse. I was happy to get him because we were desperate for LBs. He's played like a 4*.
  • Don't know about Chaz Wright but I hope Nelson/Mahon return. Our running game hasn't done much since they've been gone.

"
tell me I am wrong here....."

That's your wife's job. ;)
True that. But to rephrase that properly to give positive credit to my wife--"she keeps me grounded"--which I need.

She's rocking her 1995 PSU Rose Bowl sweatshirt at work in Columbus today. And she's Columbus born and raised. I got lucky.

If you need to have it "explained" to you.....you wouldn't understand anyway.

Really, this is your answer?

I consider myself a fairly open minded person, and am willing to consider your rational, but defending a statement by accusing the other person of being stupid is really lame.

Let me at least defend my position of not going for it.

1. You have a good punter, big play offense and are only down two scores, punt and switch field position, make the other team go 80 or 90 years.
2. You do not have a dominating offensive line, and your third and short and fourth and short conversion % is very poor.
3. Don't give a team with a huge OLine and strong running back a short field when only down two scores.
4. You had just given up a touchdown on a turnover, going for it in your own territory and not making it is the same as another turnover.

I hated the 4th down decision then and still don't think it was the "smart" thing to do.

It was one of those games where every bounce, from a fumble, went right back to a Wiscy player. Just flat out weird.

I have no idea why they reviewed that catch other than to slow us down. It was ridiculous.

Yes I was wondering if they were going to fit the game into their ads.

Gillikin is a stud.

I thought the Wiscy RB was pretty good. He is a beast. Strong, strong kid.

PSU players were exceptional. My favorite was Mike G.

I was impressed with Wiscy. I thought there players represented Wiscy really well and you have to give them
credit for meeting with the press after the game. That couldn't have been easy for them.
I like Chryst but man is he boring. LOL.

Chaz is my "unsung" player of the year.

Really, this is your answer?

I consider myself a fairly open minded person, but defending a statement by accusing the other person of being stupid is really lame.

You had just given up a touchdown on a turnover, going for it in your own territory and not making it is the same as another turnover.
Its math.
It is what it is....and I'm not trying to be snarky towards you

But I've gone through it numerous times on this board in the past.....and I ain't gonna' waste my time doing it again - - - - -
Not when there are - if you are really interested in figuring it out and getting it right - all sorts of resources available on the net that can educate you.

Those two decisions by CJF on Saturday were not even "close calls"

  • I feel great for Haley. He fumbled a couple of kicks as an underclassman that cost us games. Nice to see him with a couple of big plays this year that won us games. Agree, he was an impressive interview.

Haley's genes are top notch; father is a Brown educated physician, mother is a former PSU track star with a Ph. D. from Pitt - both practice in Atlanta.
