tell me I am wrong here.....

I thought, and still do, that CJF's decision to go for it on 4th and 2 in our own territory in the first half, was ludicrous. It smelled like desperation. Was he sending a message to the team?

Some other thoughts I haven't seen covered:
  • We turned the ball over, twice. One was for a TD on the center's bad snap. Not often you win a game when you lose the turnover battle 2 - 0.
  • Just seemed like one of those games. We lose two fumbles...Wiscy fumbles twice and regains all three. If you are keeping track at home, that is five balls on the turf and we don't recover a single one.
  • WTF on reviewing Gesicki's catch?
  • I am not sure I've seen more commercials that during that game. I wasn't keeping track but by the middle of the second quarter, I'd swear there was more commercial time than playing time.
  • The post game, on B1G, was very complimentary and effusive about PSU. Great to see. One guy said he loved TM's "home run" celebration. He pointed to the screen and said "Props to you, Trace McSorley!". Cool. DiNar-dog said that CJF was talking up Trace in the fall tour and before the Temple game.
  • Wiscy's QB played a great game. He made a couple of throws where there was only about a foot window. He ended up being 16-21 passing with a QB rating of 145.8. (Trace was an off the charts 217.6!!!)
  • They had SB with 106 yards rushing but the official stats have him with only 83.
  • Gilikin, two punts with a 49 yard average. Way to contribute!! special teams played great!
  • Clement with 164 yards.
  • The PSU kids, during interviews, were very impressive. To me, the best was Grant Haley....kid has a great voice and could do play by play.
  • Wiscy's kids were great too. Wiscy is the real deal...I like that team and kids. Chyrst was great too, he's not a great speaker but very gracious and complimentary toward PSU. If I had to root for a B1G team outside of PSU, it would probably be Wiscy.
  • I've never seen a kid wear a hoodie under his uniform before. Just interesting.
  • Debbie Downer comment, Irving Charles had a tough game.
  • Chaz Wright had a nice game, considering.

Yes, I thought both 4th down calls were terrible calls. Wisky is usually slow and methodically, 8 minutes to half.Punt them deep and see what happens. They must drive the field to score. As long as we see decisions like that, Franklin will continue to be questioned regarding his coaching ability.

Regarding the math behind going for it on 4th down. Here is a article that discusses it and links to articles that do the detailed math:

You'd have more luck teaching Chinese Calculus to a retarded squirrel......believe me, I've tried :)

You can give them all the irrefutable data in the world......and you'll still have meatheads saying "Yeah, But...." (and they will never even read, much less understand, the facts anyway)

The "broad-brush" facts are so evident - and so simple - its not like a HC needs to have an "abacus-man" following him around on the sidelines.

Unless there is some extraordinary situation wrt game time remaining and score:

1 - Don't even think about kicking a FG from inside the 10 yard line
and
2 - From the time you reach the vicinity of your own 35 yard line, and until you reach the vicinity of your opponents' 30 or so.....treat every series as "four-down-territory"

Do that.....even if that is ALL a coach does with the "analytics"....and they will claim a huge advantage over 95% of the other coaches in the game.

Again - BOB was outstanding in that regard......and CJF seems to "get it" pretty well also.

"But...but....but...." LOL

Not a big fan of McSorely's "swing for the fences" act. Probably because I don't really like baseball.

I actually like the hoodie look, although a bit surprised it does not conform to any uniform code regarding.....a uniform code.

The Fox broadcast was horrible, although Gus Johnson could get excited about paint drying. Who the hell is Joel Klatt and why does he matter? Fox makes everything over dramatized, although I do like Johnson referring to McSorely as "The Wizard of Camelot".

The Penn State crows, in mostly white, stood out great. And seemed loud.

For those who went - was the game a sell out? Thought I saw a few empty seats up top.

If this team can handle Wisconsin, they should be able to handle USC.
Not a sell-out. Empty seats scattered and up top. Announced crowd was a little over 65K

Why??

Look I love Franklin and support him 100%, but someone needs to explain to me why in the 2nd quarter behind 14 or 21 points you would go for it when in your own territory, especially when you have a good punter.
The defense hadn't really stopped them, so you punt it and they March down the field and score again using up even more of the clock. It's easy to say it should have been 14-14 at half but if Wisconsin marches down and scores after a punt and uses up all of the clock, we don't even have time to score that TD at the end. Also, if you make it you give the offense some much needed confidence. It's easy to second guess a call after the result has been established. Play to win, play aggressively or go home.

well, I said it at the time. In addition, you seem to think field position doesn't have anything to do with football.
Wiscy's drives:
  • PSU Punt
  • Wicy TD, 14 plays with two close third down conversions on passes and an iffy roughing call after a big loss
  • PSU Punt
  • Wiscy TD on a 72 yard TD 14-0
  • PSU TD, 14-7
  • Wiscy Punt
  • Wiscy TD on PSU fumble 21-7
  • PSU goes for it on fourth
  • TD Wiscy 28-7
  • PSU fumble (sack)
  • Wiscy Punt
  • PSU TD 28-14
  • Half

Most teams have two point conversion plays that get you 2-3 yards almost automatically that they practice exclusively for these situations. They even run them out of a different formation to add some confusion. The two plays PSU ran were DOA. Never had a shot of succeeding.

2 yards is normally a running situation. PSU hasn't been able to consistently get 2 yards running since Nelson, Mahon, & Palmer got injured. The Rutgers game was the exception.

I did like the shovel pass to Barkley for a 1st down. It only got 2 yards but I still liked the call.

I was there and everyone around me agreed with you (me) that no way they go for it in those situations. Play field position and don't give them the easy yards to score. But once the decision was made, my other issue was having less than a yard to go and you are in shotgun. I know that is how the offense is run. I don't think McS was under center once. But you have to trust your guys (and the awesome mobile qb) to get less than a yard without gimmicks or handoffs that took too long to develop due to being shotgun.

I also was so so mad about the late hit. They had them stopped and there was no need to hit him. That also led to a td whereas it would have been a punt. Thank goodness Whiskey returned the favor in the amazing, can't even dream it up 2nd half.

I have no voice today. Perhaps I met some of you who knows. I talked to a lot of people. Was at the B10 tailgate for hours and was in 3 bars and 2 hotels.

The most amazing PSU game I have attended where it mattered so much. Even more than the Outback type bowls to me.
