If you're even a casual fan of wrestling, it's hard to miss the obvious development that is occurring in the Penn State Room. The combination of high level coaching, and wrestling partners that are the best in the country (and in some cases, the world) are helping our guys make significant jumps.

Some recent examples include the development we are seeing from Nick Lee, VJ, and even Mark Hall. This despite the fact that most of these guys were already highly skilled and ranked wrestlers when they came to PS, they have continued to develop and progress. I think it starts with the leadership from Cael and his coaching team beginning with evaluating talent, and recruiting wrestlers who are committed to excellence in everything they do.

From there, the philosophy of becoming the best version of themselves that they can be permeates their approach. And the icing on the cake is when you have a guy like Mark Hall who cites the opportunity he has to drill with guys like Bo and David Taylor to simulate the length of Valencia, and Jason Nolf to simulate someone who shoots a lot (that's an understatement) it's easy to see how Mark progressed from losing a match 8-2 in the NCAA finals to winning the rematch in a dominating 4 - 0 shutout.

And the best part is that what we are seeing is not a fluke. The system for world domination as illustrated in Diceman's excellent spreadsheet is firmly established and extending well into the future. With the likes of Brooks, Beard, Howard, Joe Lee, and others yet to be named, it will become even more desirable for top recruits to choose PS as the best place to develop their talents. And as other PS alum join David Taylor as World Champions, it will only add to the body of work that demonstrates that Bo was speaking truth when he stated . . . "That's what we do". And that's who we are. We Are . . . Penn State!

Another really good example is RBY. Zeke Jones when deciding to move Milhoff up to face him probably took into account their encounters in the ASU room while RBY was in high school. That major decision by RBY had to be a complete shock to Jones.

Lets not forget Joe Lee...….although I think that may be who you meant :)

I don’t believe I’m familiar with HR. Is that a wrestling forum?

It's the wrestling message board on the Rivals site for Iowa. The actual sites on Rivals are named by the publishers. This site is Blue White Illustrated, and the Iowa site is Hawkeye Report.

You should post this on HR.

Probably said in jest (never sure with @johnstownsteel), but if serious, I disagree. There is no reason to try and incite another fan base, especially on their board. Granted, I see this through the filter of someone that has to deal with these situations quite frequently on BWI's boards, and not as a fan. I'm hopeful that even fans can see that little good comes from posts like are being advocated on another fan base's site.

I guess I should have added the smiley face to denote sarcasm. I regularly visit the HR site and realize that this post would not be well received on their Board. I prefer to focus on the many blessings we enjoy as PS fans and see no value in trying to incite others who are less fortunate.

a standing suggestion of mine. never assume, no matter how obvious in your mind, that your post will be interpreted as sarcasm. However, if a smiley face is included at the end of the post, then most of the time folks realize that the post is sarcasm.

Vodka will be on the phone tomorrow with compliance... Cael’s trying to reset Nick Lee’s eligibility clock! :)

Yes the responses to my post have made that clear so I will definitely use the sarcasm emoticon in the future. Thanks!

Never post to incite, simply a strong desire for stimulating conversation.

2 minutes after this hits here, they know. No need to add fuel. They've got plenty.

Related to the OP, another clear demonstration of improvement would seemingly be #4 Nick Lee (9-0) as evidenced by his current ranking/record compared to #19 Chad Red (13-5).

I am excitedly awaiting the PSU-Nebraska dual on Jan 20 where I hope to see Nick demonstrate this improvement with a dominating win over Chad to avenge his 2016 loss in the Indiana State finals where Red acted “classlessly” by taking a victory lap around the arena while Nick waited in the center of the mat to shake hands.

Nick handled that really well. Wonder how long Red would have celebrated if his coach didn't grab him.

It is universally acknowledged by all wrestling enthusiasts ( minus the foil hats on HR and our boy Jammenz) that Cael and staff are exceptional at developing talent. There will be no changing the opinions of the outliers who believe otherwise.
To believe PSU dominance is the result of great coaching is to believe that Brands is not the very best at developing wrestlers. To believe this means admitting that an actual power shift has occurred and it isn't just a blip on the screen. I was very much alive and well when many of my ISU brethren disputed Iowa's new found stranglehold on college wrestling. It was proven that the Gable bump was real and we are now seeing that the Cael bump is equally real.
The recent strategy of the blind deniers is to claim it is all about top 10 PFP talent. The belief that recruiting top 10 PFP is a sure fire way to dominate and nothing else matters is the new battle cry of the deny it exists crowd. This is being proven to be equally absurd ( see tosu), so there is really nothing left to do but call Cael names and agree he is a self centered scum bag ( after all they certainly know Cael better than his former teammates or current wrestlers). You simply can't fix stupid.

Nah. ..... it’s mostly a dumpster fire.

It is not only about developing talent, it is about identifying the talent that is nowhere near their ceiling on the wrestling mat while at the same time identifying and staying away from guys who are academic and other off the mat risks.

To keep attracting the level of talent PSU does, you have to had demonstrated that you can develop them. After all, blue chip recruits all have visions of the Olympics, if they do not believe you can develop them into Olympic caliber they are going somewhere else.

What is really interesting about PSU is there is no PSU style of wrestling other than you are going to look to score and get bonus points. Each PSU wrestler has different skill sets which can be very diverse when compared to each other.

I'm not criticizing anyone here, but it's a bit bizarre that any PSU fan feels the need to defend Cael's coaching credentials.

In what alternate Universe would any wrestling fan think he can't coach? Even in Hawk-eye country those fans are surely a small minority.

Agree. A small but vocal minority of Iowa fans don;t bother me in the least. In fact, i find it quite amusing. Others do also, which is why they often reference it, but as a joke, not necessarily to defend Cael and his staff, which as you note, do not need defending.
