The Legacy of Spencer Lee

Another Spencer Lee thread!

The question is does the last year of his career wipe out what he did the other 3 years? I don't think it wipes it out per say, but it does certainly impact it. I think he is a rung down from Nolf, Yanni, Retherford, Dake, etc.

As the BEG Wrestling guys coined it. Excuses are for wussies Spencer bailing out of two tourneys in a row was the 'jump the shark' moment for his legacy.

Once all the hullabaloo regarding his loss in the finals fades, his legacy will ultimately be determined by his career going forward. If he eventually wins an Olympic goal, that will supersede all else.

In the meantime, he is the undisputed champion “postee” of those who generate board threads, with no end in sight. A dubious distinction, but an indicator of his impact on the sport nonetheless.

Meanwhile, Iowa wrestling is becoming more irrelevant with each passing day, and isn’t worthy of being viewed as a rival of PSU at this point or the foreseeable future.

Starocci could be another 4-year undefeated champ. Nolf was pretty much the same as Zain except for the injury in the Van Brill z

Zain’s two Hodges put him above Nolf IMO and should have been 3. Although Nolf was certainly out of this world dominant.

You mean the year they’re making the motion picture “Visionworks Quest” about?

You mean the year when he was on his back more times than a ski resort skank?

Let's call a spade a spade: PSU fans harbor resentment to Spencer because he's a PA kid (and not just a PA kid, in our backyard) who would have fit perfectly here for 4 years while we had a major issue at his weight otherwise. So yeah we rooted for him to fail, is that wrong? Maybe but that's sports. Sports fandom bring out a lot of envy and entitlement in people, it's a negative about it for sure but calling out one fanbase for it is throwing stones in a glass house. It's literally everywhere, every sport. Fan is short for fanatic.

Iowa fans act like they aren't the same way with Kadyn Proctor going to Alabama and don't give me the "Spencer never committed to PSU" difference, far as I'm concerned it's still two kids that ended up doing what they felt was right for them (plus Kadyn Proctor could have held a spot at Iowa for months)

Or maybe it's the perpetual PR campaign.

PSU fans didn't resent Marsteller -- who actually did commit to PSU.

I do wonder if Marstellar would have had the same issues if he had stayed with his PSU commitment.

As someone who has been around people like Chance was, the short answer is yes. Chance’s problem was internal, and no amount of external environment will change a person’s internal emotions/issues until they are ready. He finally was ready after the incident at Lock Haven. I am happy for him.

He had those issues in high school. Rumor is Cael put some rules on Marstellar’s commitment to PSU, he left soon after.

It was the constant boasts from the Iowa coaches and fanbase about Spencer being the GOAT when our team, in our eyes, had produced 7-8 wrestlers that were (at least) his equal in the Cael era. Take away the constant Iowa boasts, and it’s entirely different.

Did having Nick Suriano committed have anything to do with Spencers decision?

That…. And the fact that one should never be let off the hook for stupid mistakes such as…

Choosing Iowa over PSU
Getting decked while going for #4
Admitting publicly you like White Claw
Having daddy do a infomercial for you
Having mommy make an ass out of herself on ESPN

Exactly

I had no resentment toward Spencer when he committed to Iowa. I was a big fan in 2018 when he took out Tomasello. I was pulling for him again when he met Suriano in the finals the next year.

If I had resentment at all, it wasn't personal. It was more about all the hype from Hawkeye fans.

i thought it was cool the year Joesph, Lee, Nolf (and I thought there was another Pitt area kid) won Natty's and had their pix taken - Repping their HS club
