ESPN is airing W Michigan vs Ball State.

I don’t know how much $$$ ESPN can be generating - and how much of that could make its way into the coffers of the respective ADs at the two schools (but it couldn’t be much)

IN THE MEANTIME:

These “student-athletes” - who put in who knows how much time to “do their thing” - are playing in front of a “crowd” of probably - - - seriously - - - - leas than 100 fans actually sitting in he stands.

The bands and cheerleaders have to outnumber the fans 5 to 1.
Now, they may not draw 100,000 on a Saturday afternoon - - - but this is absolutely pathetic (just checked, they avaerage right around 10-15,000 when they play on Saturdays)

Wasn’t this endeavor supposed to be “for the kids”? “For the students”? Etc.

the MAC have been playing Tuesday and Wednesday games for about 5 weeks this season, and have been doing for like the last 8 to 10 years that i can remember.

In fairness, it’s also in the mid 20’s. Ball State is less than stellar this year. I lived a block away from what is now the stadium, in the 70’s. That was before Ball State moved up and joined the MAC. Not a great football tradition at Ball State. Basketball is king in Muncie!

However, a Ball State grad from that era starred for the Eagles. Timmy Brown holds the Eagles record for longest kick-off return, 105 yards. He also played “Spearchucker” Jones in the Mash TV Series. See, you learn all kind of interesting trivia on BWI!

MAC gets $10mm p.a. from ESPN. That works out to $830k per school, or about the same as PSU's budget to keep Indiana Fats wallowing in onion dip.

A 6pm Tuesday game on ESPN2 still gets better ratings than the alternative for that time slot.

And for that... the Ball State kids have their "Senior Day" on a Tuesday Night in front of a crowd of 30 Ushers and 12 Hot Dog vendors.

F^cking Eh
And next week they play again on Tuesday at Miami for their Senior Night. That’s what you get when you’re a “second tier” program in a “minor league”. At least we get some college football on Tuesday. Though I am a traditionalist in many ways, I like being able to watch college football on Tuesday, even though it’s MAC, Thursday, usually ACC, and Fridays, PAC or even now BIG.

Two teams that would otherwise never be seen get the national spotlight for a night. Seems like a good deal to me.

Well they can play on saturday with no TV coverage and, more importantly, no TV money if they'd prefer. I'm guessing the MAC did the math and figured out this is the best scenario for their athletic programs

Depends on how you define words like "MAC", "Best Scenario", and "Athletic Programs".

Who's making the decisions?
What are their priorities?

Did those decision makers - whomever they are - opt for the choice that best meets their priorities?
I would imagine they did (but who knows, with some of these ass clowns). More is the pity (and the shame)

Were those decisions congruent - in any way - with the propaganda so many swallow down wrt "What ICA is all about"?
I kinda' doubt it.... obviously :)

Why do you choose to babble in hypothetical nonsense all the time? It's very simple. The MAC gets paid by ESPN to broadcast their games; the Mac distributes the money to the schools, who pay for their coaches and facilities. If the MAC and the AD's don't want the money, they can find another way to pay their bills and play the games on Saturday

it actually sucks for the home team and if you want to do game stuff like tailgate etc!! You have to take off work , logistics on campus, parking etc. If you are the away team its not too bad, you get to watch the game somewhere on a big screen TV!!
Now that Marshall is in cUSA they dont have the mid week games, just some Friday night games, which isnt all bad, gets the MU game out of the way,and you have your whole weekend to watch other games!

Here's how it was explained to me by a friend - former Toledo player/GA who supposedly received it from former Toledo coach when this all started. (Not my uncle's mailman's sister's neighbor).
Prior to the MAC playing on Tuesday and Wednesday they had 1 opportunity to play in a bowl game.
Espn creates a few new bowl games that allow the MAC the additional chances to play in the bowl season.
Stipulation? We want advertising money and you WILL play on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
You're athletic dept gets $800,00+ a year, your program gets national attention (can't think that's a bad thing), and an opportunity to take your team bowling.
Honestly, which AD and/or coach turns it down?
And, the argument for what's best for the student athlete? Has that really been an argument for 15/20/25 years?

why is football playing on a Tuesday night a problem, but if its basketball, it isnt? Or how about tennis? Many Northern teams leave for a week and not on spring break.
is baseball playing 80-100 games per year best for the student athlete?

Hypothetical?
It is what it is.... not hypothetical.

Anyway... as I said..... I am quite certain the ADs are probably pleased with the arrangement (thanks for "educating" me :) )

My point was that I have this antiquated notion wrt what (and who) ICA was supposed to be about....
And this equally antiquated notion that the "responsible adults" :) might - from time to time - act in the best interests of anyone but their greedy, lazy, sloppy selves.
Some people may share them - some (I expect "most") do not. That's fine.

And yes, before you devote more time to "education", I'll let you know its not necessary for you to do so.
I am "less than oblivious" to the landscape of $$$ generating ICA. I neither have, nor had, any "Don Quixote" delusions..... was just (with the original post) pointing out some "issues".
I'm fully aware that "that isn't the way it is".

Not sure why that chafes your crotch.

If I was playing football at Toledo I'd rather play on Tuesday on ESPN in front of 10,000 people instead of on Saturday with no TV in front of 25,000 (or whatever it would be). And I'd hate to see what those athletic depts would like like without the 8M that ESPN sends them every year.

But sure, continue to wax poetic about college athletics and ignore the realities of the world. Whatevs

Yes, your team gets "national attention" assuming that anyone watches the game. So far, the good folks at Nielsen have detected that anyone does.

Yes, your team goes bowling, which winds up costing your school or conference money (last time a MAC school went to a NY6 bowl the conference had to eat $2mm in ticket guarantees). But, hey, it gives your school president the opportunity to lower his schlong into the onion dip and that's gotta be worth something.

Clueless. Obviously not a football guy.
