Not sure the fielders would have even had the chance to play it in foul territory.

I'm not a baseball rules expert, but could someone explain why that wasn't a foul ball?

Simple answer - because it was fielded in fair territory. Foul/fair for a ground ball is determined by where the ball is touched by the fielder prior to it reaching first or third base. If the same spinning ball rolled into fair territory beyond the bag then it would have been foul regardless.

McCarver sounded like an ass by implying the out could have been made if the pitcher would have hustled to first. No way that would have been an out.

Correct. That is why I said, had they been heads up, they could have rushed to play it foul. But that would have been a miracle play, and who thinks that a ball will spin that much back into fair. Crazy.
