Weak.
Definitely curious about your running game. Do you expect it to be improved this year? Or is it going to be below average because of the system?
OL - what do you return here? Were they young and just better pass blockers that you expect to improve?
RB - did you bring anybody in here?
PJ was probably very good to great last year. He was very likely headed for the NFL. I think he got up to 330 last year so he should be a tick quicker at 321. He's a true 1T, always in the gap. Our interior pass rush died with him getting injured last year.
Your guys from here seemed to question whether or not he was 100% going into camp and whether or not he will play a key role in the first game or even take a minority of the snaps? Any shift on that? Seems like a force if he’s 100%.
the running game hasn’t really happened since 2018, the last time before this year that the line looked like men.
Purdue’s fans think king Doerue gets holes but is just a wee man because he runs a 7.5 forty or something? But, for whatever reason the offensive line has only blocked for him against Minnesota the last few years:
Serviceable. But at Purdue that’s like if Wisconsin had a serviceable QB.
Darrell hazell actually had physical offensive and defensive lines. He just coached like he was 9 years old and tried to run tressel ball at Purdue, which you can’t do cause you aren’t better in the trenches.
those OL all graduated in 2018 and then the lines since have had a lot of guys retire for medical reasons. So it’s been quick pass blocking lines who will intermittently get a push in the run game as the year goes on.
this year the OL looks like men for the first time since 2018.
LT Eric Miller - was RT last year cause we had transfer Greg long. More suited to LT. spent the first few years putting on weight. Played through injuries last year. Good 5th year senior who seems okay as a run blocker and is quick as a pass blocker (Purdue errs toward 300 lb guys who can move their feet first, if they are more physical also, bonus).
LG Spencer holstege - I’ve heard he’s Purdue’s best all around OL. He got thrown into the fire early a few years ago. He seemed fine last year. Multiple years playing under his belt. Returning starter
C Gus Hartwig - four star senior candidate for all the awards. Wanna say this will be his third year starting
RG Marcus MBow - just a better more athletic guy than we usually get who came in last year as a true freshman in four games and played to me as good as anyone we had. We don’t usually get guys as athletic as him who show up with true size.
RT cam Craig - here’s where it gets interesting.. the coaches love Craig as an athletic physical tackle but every year he ends up playing some guard and that’s it. I think it may be him here if he’s doing well. If not maybe it’s Muhamane Moussa .. who is kinda the OT version of Mbow (true freshman last year, four games, more athletic at his size than guys we normally get)z. Maybe it’s Mbow here and Sione Finau at RG, transfer from FAU. Strong guy at RG.
then Daniel Johnson transferred from Kent state. Big athletic tackle who may play both tackle spots off the bench.
it seems infinitely better than what we’ve had but we really don’t know. It’s like cross your fingers stuff. Would any of these guys outside Hartwig excite penn state fans? Meh. But they may keep PSUs DL in check and even get push in the run game. In 2019 for perspective they couldn’t move Nevadas line for true freshman doerue at all.
Backs off the bench are:
Kobe Lewis - CMU transfer who seems like a bigger quicker back than Doerue but doesn’t have that big ten build IMO .. rushed for 1000 in 2019, injured last year.
dylan downing - transfer from UNLV last year, looked like a fullback, then dropped weight and ripped off a nice long run against Indiana, but it’s friggin Indiana
devin mockobee - service academy kid who chose instead to be PWO for us. RS freshman
Should be much much improved on the OL and with the backs from last year. Am I counting on it in week 1? No. But marginally better in week one for sure.
you guys OL?
