Every school should do this.

I don't get the parents desire to be in constant communication with their children while their at school. I've heard that argument constantly made by parents against such laws/rules in discussions about phone use in school. When I was a kid I wasn't thinking of telling my mom everything I'm doing at school.

It’s unbelievable how many times parent call her kid during class. Not just text them, but actually call them on the phone and then when you try to tell the kid to turn their phone off the parent immediately wants you fired. It’s not like it was anything important, it was just so that the mom could talk to the kid for a minute.

Modern moms are insane.

What’s even more insane? Is that the administrators in the schools and even the school system in general, give in to these moms.

The girls in high school dressed like sluts today. Over 50% of the girls wear halter tops or tube tops. They’re wearing lingerie and other clothes that are basically see-through and yet when someone calls them out regarding the dress code the moms go crazy saying we should allow their daughters to wear whatever they want.

Most parents are stupid. Even when we go out to eat i look around and all of the other kids are on screens. The ONLY time my daughter is allowed to have an Ipad is on the plane. Thats it, so the novelty keeps her occupied. (she immediately falls asleep)

Also, there was a similar article from a few years ago about teens in Brooklyn.

A) They are all helicopter moms. Micromanagers. Control freaks.
B) They are trying to relive their youth. Many are kids that never grew up.
C) Any criticism is an insult to their parenting skills. And instead of being parents they want to be best friends forever.

All adds up to disaster.

Bison and I seem to walk on similar paths as it relates to modern day high school "culture"- he just below the Mason-Dixon line and me just above it.

The upside at my school- most kids are generally good and I really don't mind interacting with them and trying my best to move them along their path. I still love my job.

The downside- if I think too much- or maybe AT ALL- then you will go absolutely insane with the amount of double/triple talk amongst those who manage education. No consequences due to "emotional" concerns. No detention. No Saturday detention. Vapes are illegal controlled substances....you wouldn't know it if you walked into ANY high school bathroom. But for me- cell phones are the absolute worst. No. Redeeming. Value.

Cell phones CONTRIBUTE exactly what positive to learning? I stood between 2 girls about ready to rip each others' eyes and hair out last week over Social Media crap- "You Snapped That!" "I didn't SNAP that at YOU!" "Why is your sister Snapping at me? Can't you fight for yourself???" BLAH BLAH BLAH. Like crack addicts- kids CANNOT control themselves. I have yet to see a brilliant use or positive from phone presence- other than as a reward- sort of like "candy" for getting a math problem right in my day. I'm completely fine with banning- but not likely (see double/triple talk comment above).

The dress code is non-existent/not enforced. I certainly will never report a female student- not worth it. If you look you are a perv- and there are more than enough women teachers to handle that. As for guys....that Gangsta Style of wearing skinny jeans below your waist with the whole butt/underwear showing is making a comeback with at least one denizen of our school who was wearing light blue athletic style briefs today. I'll have no problem telling him to pull his pants up next time. This particular young man goes to school all year long...can't seem to get enough during the August-June period. I teach him in Summer School (court mandated) so will try and stem the tide. NOT optimistic. Kids are sheep. I hoped I'd retire before that fad came back....

Whenever I feel like I'm just being an "old head" I try and stop and truly look at the situation. What I see mostly are distracted kids who have not been held to high standards, especially during and since Covid, who are still dressing in pajamas and slippers - but instead of Zoom at home they are now walking the halls. They believe that constant communication with friends and family is their RIGHT- and I too have had kids talking to their parents during class without my permission. Just bizarre. Attention spans are extremely limited and attention to detail is sorely lacking. For any type of research or quick response question you get 50% of the same answer- which is the first one to pop up in a Google Search. Ask a kid what the words they wrote down means.....good luck with that. AI will only exasperate that problem....

Anyway- all schools- urban/suburban/rural are going through unprecedented times. Changes are coming- whether they ultimately benefit or detract from society will become evident in time. I've got 21 years left to live if I die when my dad did...and possibly 8-9 left to work.

We sure are living in interesting times.

That's crazy, I was at a school in Montgomery County and when I noticed one of the students wearing a slip and nothing underneath, the other male teachers said, "it's her freedom of expression" Parents let their daughters wear that in a high school?

These are our future mayors, city councilmen, county commissioners/executives, school board members.
Where I reside in the northwest quadrant of PA, our best and brightest high school graduates head off to college and the vast majority never return. We sadly dumb down our population generation after generation.
God help us all.

Which school I might have been at the same school
