Thread on testing & treatment research for COVID-19

So 100 million doses from Pfizer, 100 million from Moderna, 300 million from AstraZeneca.

That's pretty much the entire country once you factor in kids who won't get it and people who refuse to get it.

Over 50% efficacy after 1 dose. So on par with the flu vaccine.

This is the efficacy of 1 dose after 1 week. After 10 - 14 days it looks much higher and is more comparable to the efficacy after 2 doses. Definitely good news for the timing but still important to get the 2nd dose and to still be stay vigilant to limit exposure through at least the first 2 - 3 weeks after.

Based on news reports, I would have expected the map in the article below to look much darker. Granted there is a large area with no data, there isn't a lot of area where the rate is north of 50%.

Hospital occupancy rates for COVID-19

The map shows the percentage of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. Of more importance is the number of ICU beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, as well as the number of unoccupied ICU beds available at a hospital or in a community (for COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients).

It'd be nice if they showed ICU numbers from this time last year. ICUs aren't meant to be empty. And remember, just because you're in the hospital and have covid doesn't mean you went to the hospital 1) for covid-related reasons or 2) had any inclination you had covid.

I can tell you in my area this sort of data could be misleading as new “ COVID floors “ needed to be created to keep up with demand.
I can also tell you that the length of the obituary section of the local paper is now about 50 - 75% more than usual.

I have also been told that this is typically north of 80% capacity anyway. These beds just don't lie around unoccupied. if they are, they are ripped out and the space used for other activities. I've been told the problem isn't beds but people. They can always move people into other beds, as long as the rest of the equipment is available and. so far, there is plenty of that. The problem is the number of healthcare workers and what shape they are in.
