Time for a name change. From Nittanyville....

PA already has Blue Ball, Intercourse and Bird in Hand. So, I second my own suggestion...

"Beavertown"

It's not only American, it's Pennsylvanian!
I grew up in Beaver County, not far from the towns of Beaver and Beaver Falls. Both are on the Beaver River. Point is there is a long history of geographical landmarks in PA that celebrate the Beaver, so why not one more? After all we could all use a little more Beaver in our lives, no?

It was changed illegally. Per the clubs constitution it required a meeting to be called with a vote. But it happened over Skype meeting with the officers over the summer so no one else had the chance to stop it from the current regime in charge. #neverforget #stillsalty

^^^THIS +1000

Because that's where it started so the name should just continue. Did they change the name of the town you live in? No.
Actually they did. When I was young it was Hickory Township but was changed to Hermitage when I was in college.

...they even changed "The Pennsylvania State College"...

...to "The Pennsylvania State University"... but the worst part is...

...I graduated from the 'College" in 1953 and my wife graduated from the "University" in 1955...

...and she likes to remind me every once in a while!...

The students named it Paternoville over 10 years ago. 95% of current students never watched a Paterno coached team.

Agreed. Paterno to the current Penn State students is not much more relevant than Bo Schembechler to current Michigan students or Woody Hayes to OSU students. I doubt very many students at Michigan or OSU spend much time thinking about or honoring their former great coaches. Right or wrong, I think Penn State students are in the same boat.

I assume you mean while a student at PSU, because most had access to TV's while Paterno was still coach.

That being said, what you are trying to do is conflate two completely unrelated thoughts. That's like saying that the students should vote to rename Eisenhower auditorium because they didn't go to school while he was there. While it's true, it's a completely irrelevant reason to change the name.

Alabama students still wear hats like Bear Bryant did.

The real question you should be asking is "are current students at OSU/UM (or wherever) changing traditions that started before they arrived on campus?" Did OSU students try to change Woody Hayes Drive to Urban Meyer Street? Did UM students try to change Schembechler Hall to Harbaugh Hall?

I don't think the current students have an issue with honoring Paterno. They just don't worship him the way some here do. They have a much more objective view. Time has moved on, the students have moved on, they are living in the present, not the past.

Agreed. I think there are some who are disappointed that the students don't fight more to honor Paterno. I can't see a big contingent of current students caring about calling the tent city Paternoville or anything about the statue. They will likely cheer when his picture appears on the jumbotron but I think that is about it.

I like Jamestown or Franklintown. It's time we start making new traditions and honor the current coach. It doesn't take anything away from JVP, it's just that this is a new football era now. I hope CJF is successful and stays for a long time and I think he just might.

So? Ever notice all the alabama students who wear houndstooth hats in honor of bear bryant? That still happens.

I think it is more because the kids think the hounds tooth hat looks cool. If Bryant wore a boring looking or less stylish hat, then I doubt any kid would wear it.

Right.
The students at Bama are well aware of The Bear and his legacy, as there is a Bear Bryant Museum on campus. Bama is smart enough to capitalize on Bear's legacy and honor him, and decades later the students are still paying homage to him. Amazing how that simple concept can work.

Honoring JVP and tying his Grand Experiment and Success With Honor to the Paterno Library named after him would be something that generations of students would come to admire and take great pride in. A JVP Museum, either as a distinct part of the All-Sports Museum or on its own, would be an ongoing revenue-generator that could put money toward athletics' capital projects or to the grant-in-aid funds or whatever. And to a lesser extent, Paternoville would stay as named because of the legacy and pride the students feel for decades to come.

Simple stuff, easy PR, but Surma and Suhey and others had to be pissed off at Joe for selfish reasons. The college football coach who should be the #1 example for all things good in college sports can't be mentioned without controversy. Absurd.
Damn short-sighted, in-it-for-themselves OGBOT.

Pretty much the only place on the planet that people wear those ugly hats is in Tuscaloosa. I think it's pretty clear they wear them because of Bryant.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the hats are not a knod to Bear Bryant. They are. When I see a camera panning the crowd on game day at Bama, I tend to see more girls then guys wearing the hats. (although I could be wrong about that but I know a large contingent of women wear them). I suspect most of them are probably more concerned about looking cute in the hat then honoring Bryant. If Bryant was known for thick black reading glasses instead of that hat, I doubt we would see many students wearing them.

The houndstooth pattern itself has become another symbol that represents Bama. It appears in the form of hats, skirts, purses and many other items. And it is not limited to Tuscaloosa display, it can be spotted all over the South.

It a student run organization. If the want to change it they can. It should not be some old people telling them what to name it. If they want to change it back they can. It not up to us to decide for them.

you clearly missed the post on HOW it was illegally changed by a small cabal of students under the influence of the BoT.

but don't let these pesky facts deter you from your Paterno hate

I saw the post. It has nothing to do with my personal feelings on Paterno. The current students in charge can change it back if it was clearly important enough to them. Obviously it is not. My point still stands that it should come from those currently running it not from alumni or fans. It their organization now. If they want it to be Paternoville then they should change it.

So what is preventing the group from changing it back? It appears that there is a lack of support for doing that, otherwise it would have happened.

I don't get the impression that anyone here is trying to decide for them. Some are making suggestions and stating their reasons for it. While it is a student-run organization, it is one that has some emotional attachment to it from a large contingent of alumni and fans, so people outside of the student org. will have opinions about it.

One of the things that PSU students of any generation don't and really can't understand yet is how deeply PSU becomes ingrained in our hearts and souls well beyond our college years. So we're going to have opinions and ideas and want to share them with the current students. I don't think anyone reasonably expects that all ideas will be adopted, but I think it is reasonable to expect that given the alums and fans will have opinions, that they have a way to express them and that there is someone who will listen and open a dialogue about them, so that we can all get a better understanding of others' points of view.

Please, students, do not look to either the OGBOT or the Power Block of the current BOT or Alumni Assoc. leadership for examples as to how to model this radical open communication idea.
