Tj Johnson to transfer

Because he was cut from the team?

If "cut" is too strong of word, he was kindly asked to look at other opportunities. He didn't magically wake up this morning after an entire off season and think, "I want to go to a new school..."

Why would the coaching staff "cut" a player that could add depth and potentially contribute, at least in practice on the scout team? Your suggestion makes no sense. I'm sure that there are tough conversations about the future for certain kids, but this would be done after the season is over. As others have mentioned, it's possible that he didn't like being so far down on the depth chart and couldn't see himself surpassing anyone above him

Because they are recruiting players that they think are better. But this reasoning makes no sense in August as Johnson's departure only serves to put PSU down a man.

If I'm Johnson and I see that I'm going to get very little playing time this year then I absolutely do what he did and get out before classes start this year. Then he can sit this year as a transfer and play next year. Why would he want to use up a year of his eligibility this season barely playing and then have to leave after the season and sit out another full year on top of that?

Yup and he might even be able to play this season based on where he transfers.
