RE: The Fields' de-commit. I will bet everyone here a good natured tail-gate beer that come LOI Day 2018 Penn State will be signing an excellent 4* caliber QB as part of this class.
QB recruiting is a different beast. There are plenty of very good HS Quarterbacks. There are only so many top 10-20 programs. And schools typically only take 1 QB per class. So with QB recruiting it is typically a case of "musical chairs"... of which QB fills which Top 20 programs 1 vacancy. Very rarely , and I mean VERY rarely do 2 top tier QBs sign with the same program.
No offense to JoePa. I loved JoePa and anyone who follows my posts knows that I am a JoePa supporter. But that being said, under Joe our QB position was not viewed by stud QBs as a desirable location. Our offense was often stale, it was high school level simplistic, it was considered old school... But in 2017, under Franklin & Moorehead our offense totally blew apart all those old Penn State stereotypes. The QB position at Penn State is now considered a good destination for these kids.
What will happen is a domino effect. There were QBs who would have 100% definitely considered a PSU offer. But Fields committed early and the 1 QB spot for PSU's QB class of 2018 was closed out. I am sure Franklin id not break communication with the other QBs. Franklin is too good of a recruiter to make that mistake. Now, all of a sudden the PSU spot is open. Kids who long ago wrote off the PSU spot, now have something to think about. I'll guarantee that there are several very highly touted QBs who committed to other schools, who would prefer the PSU spot, and are now considering making a flip themselves.
Today Franklin, Moorehead and the rest of the PSU staff were probably going over the QB rankings and compiling a list of about 5-6 QBs they will reach out to over the next few days. My prediction is that in the next few weeks we will see a few offers go out to 2018 QB prospects. And by end of Summer we'll have another QB for the class of 2018.
