To the Skellar-Herlocher Angry Mob

The Herlochers have every right to maximize their revenue. I'm sure if the Skeller were willing to pay 40k a month in rent and lose money they could stay. So it will be another iron Hill or some other antiseptic chain. This is capitalism.

And so it is also capitalism that fans of the Skeller can have economic revenge on the Herlochers any way that this is possible.

The only thing that's wrong is saying the Herlochers get to maximize profit with no consequences. In these days of social media there are consequences. That's just reality.

The cost of forcing the Skeller to close, in terms of reputation and goodwill, could be quite high. A smart business person, particularly someone in a retail business, would have already factored that in.

You can bet Iron Hill and the chains are paying close attention and will factor this into their offers or their decision to consider this location at all.

I highly doubt that the Herlochers are going to suffer financially from the wrath (no pun intended) of a few hundred people who are disappointed the Skellar will be gone and the way it happened. If the new bar is a good bar, it will be full. The main money for any bar in State College comes from the students and by the time the new bar is up and running, this current hysteria will be gone. And the students will goto the new bar if the drink specials, music, and atmosphere are good. Might a couple of hundred alum not go there out of protest on 7 football weekends a year, probably. But that just means the line to get into the place on a football weekend won't be as long, as all the bars up there are full regardless.

You may be right, though that is not necessarily indicated by the level of angst displayed by the Herlochers' friends who have posted about an "angry mob," and how unfair it all is.

As some one that has remained in State College after their Penn State experience, I have to say there is no tradition, only perceived tradition. I work at the Phyrst from 90-98. Can't say I have been back more than 5 times since 98. The Phyrst was Ernie. When he sold it, the Phyrst was gone. I remember one year Ernie went to a bar in Florida that had free popcorn. He thought it was the greatest thing in the world. He came home and bought a popcorn machine and we were making popcorn. Then Ernie sold the bar for the first time. The new owner removed the popcorn machine. The next football season we had a bunch of complaints about there being no popcorn and that it was tradition to go to the Phyrst and eat popcorn. In State College tradition is two years to most.

The Skeller hasn't been "my Skeller" for a long time. When Ed Hill and Duke dissolved their partnership and the crew I ran with moved on everything was different. I have no nostalgic feelings because what I new doesn't exist.

It will be sad to see the Skeller gone but that's life. It will be missed like the Scorpion, The Post House, The Brick House, The G-Man etc.

My daughter graduated in 2014. She and her friends loved the Skeller. I graduated 34 years earlier. My friends and I loved it too.

I am told by some on this board that there are still "lines out the door," and by others that nobody cares anymore and the place is empty.

I'm not saying that people don't have fond memories of places. I am about people. When the people that "make" something to me are gone so is what I liked about it.

If you feel differently, great. I have fond memories of the crew that were my contemporaries, but they are gone and walking into the Skeller doesn't feel the same for me.

Nothing Herlocher can do to change memories because they are about the people not the place. I don't go into the Phryst to relive my youth by pointing out my pictures from various St. Patrick Days, but I remember things that happened there fondly.

I traveled to another county and entered the courtroom where I tried my first case 30-odd years ago. The judge is dead, the defense lawyer is dead, my client is dead. It still felt great to go there--indeed it brought all those dead people back to life for a little while in my memory. I remembered stuff about the trial and my life at that time that I had not thought about since just after it happened.

Memories of people are stimulated by place.

I never gave a crap about who owned any bar I spent time in- it was the times that mattered

FWIW, here are my thoughts. I did not hang at the Skeller when I was there - my bars were the Train Station and the Phyrst when Terry Beard (R.I.P.) played. After I graduated and came back for visits (Arts Fest, games) and the Skeller started serving some of the Spats menu, I would drop in for lunch - everything they served went well with Guinness on tap. On the other hand, I closed the Train Station many a night, I met my future wife there, we announced our engagement there, and also announced there that she was eating (but not drinking) for two (her first pregnancy, for you childless folks). So while I am sad that the Skeller will close, if the Herlochers resurrect the Train Station in some modified form, I will be happy.

Mr. Herlocher, if you read this, how about a cleaned-up Skeller (not too cleaned-up, just brought up to code) downstairs and a resurrected Train Station in some form upstairs? I will happily patronize both.

The people on this board tend to romanticize things, especially their perceived importance. For instance they twice thought that they had viable BOT candidates, but neither even sniffed enough votes. Herlocher's will survive their pettiness over that dump.

Terry Beard was tremendous. Can still hear him doing his rendition of Ripple by The Dead.

This ought to take care of any lingering doubt regarding whether a new lease was ever offered:
The Herlochers and Gastigers initially agreed to pursue a new lease when the property was purchased. The Herlochers informed the Gastigers via email in October that they would have to vacate the property by the end of the lease, though it said a new lease could be negotiated. The indication that a new lease could be worked out was a mistake, according to a November email, which was sent to the Gastigers and said that there would be no negotiations for a new lease.

The people on this board tend to romanticize things, especially their [own] perceived importance.

Cannot imagine why anyone from the Herlocher side of this would still be posting about it, given that it is meaningless and all. LOL.
I'm not from the "Herlocher's side". I'm from the side that some, especially you, are acting like complete handjobs in trying to destroy a brand that has been very loyal to PSU, and did nothing wrong. If anyone is at fault it's the Skeller folks for failing to secure their future via a simple lease, which is like Day 1 stuff in Business 101. Really nothing more important in this world to complain about?

Loyal to PSU. Got it. https://goo.gl/images/uv4bPW

Maybe I'm just trying to piss you off? Thank God someone with your temperament was not elected to the BOT!
Not working, Skippy. This has been funny. It's not a problem, you say, but you sure are focused on it. Lol.

Says the guy who has posted no less than 41 times on the topic. No wonder the "Free Materials Review" is so slow!

If I make a new Christmas toy and it is wildly popular and there is great buzz around it, people might be fistfighting each other at Kmart over it. That may look like a mob but it is the free market.

The Herlochers absolutely BOTCHED the rollout, and they apparently thought that their contempt for the Gastigers was shared by those of us who never knew the Gastigers.

It wasn't. All we know of the Gastigers is that we liked the Skeller just as it was. This is a giant self-inflicted wound.
People fist fighting over a toy is "free market"? That sounds like anarchy and an out of control mob enabled by a lack of oversight by those in charge of providing a safe shopping environment. Truly piss poor planning by Kmart. But, that is to be expected. To conflate this with "free market" is truly inaccurate.

Can't wait to hear that courtroom defense when the pugilists are brought before a judge. "It was just the free market at work, your honor." :)

So to be clear their desire for the product has nothing to do with demand? Sure. Ok.

I posted to push back against the many many posts from you guys who say it does not matter. I think it does. I acted in accord with my concern. You guys with no concerns have posted a bunch on this topic. But you're not concerned.

I just gotta ask. Do you now own, or have you ever owned, a Members Only jacket?

I'll miss the place, I really will.

I also miss the Scorpian (where I spent even more time), the old My-O-My (the bar off the alley, not the front bar-not that there's anything wrong with that), Ritas (where you could have a boilermaker with breakfast), the Phyrst, and the Gaff. Some of them are still there, but they are not like they were, because my friends and I have all moved on. Who owns them, how they run them is none of my business, and their current customer base is generations removed from my time.

No business man in his right mind should worry about what I think. Or what Dem thinks, either.

What I find most entertaining about this thread is that it is easy to identify the “political leanings” of the respondents based on on their opinions of this matter.

If the above account is true, would it not put the lie to the Herlochers' contention that they offered a new lease to the Gastigers? It would also lead me to wonder if the Herlochers in fact offered a reasonable price to buy the Gastigers' business. I believe the Gastigers claimed that the Herlochers offered to pay a price that was "roughly half of what liquor licenses are currently selling for in State College." Who knows whether that is true or not?

On the last part, your guess is as good as mine, but as to the first, it does give the lie to those claims by the Herlocher defenders.

I also saw a quote where Gastiger supposed asked for $1M which is three to four times what liquor licenses are going for in State College (Herlocher also already has a liquor license, so he doesn't need one).

Who knows if that is true or not.

LOL, I also am quite familiar with that "mystical" force. BTW, what size were those pitchers that we all drank out of like sophisticated philanthropic millionaires? I am guessing 30 Oz but it's totally a guess.

I think the mechanism for getting down those steps was that Pele, the goddess of fire would protect you if you got down and did the war canoe on the floor during "Hawaii-Five O."
