Transfer name to watch…

Kind of a bummer as the thought of blue and white taking out Spencer Lee in the big show is enticing, but me thinks Nicky has different plans and this is close to a done deal.

Suriano would be great but he’s so unpredictable. Almost would prefer the stability of Hildebrandt at this point. He is really, really good. Much more than just a fall back plan.
I couldn’t agree with this more. If you can get Hildebrandt then you definitely do it imo. I did hear UM is a possibility tho. Which would make their lineup pretty crazy.

Is Hildebrandt the real tall 125er?

I was hoping for a 165 transfer. I think Facundo is an absolute stud but wished he could redshirted this year. Tall task ahead of him if he’s the guy. And sadly there will be a few numb skulls out there considering him a disappointment if he doesn’t reach the podium.

I think Cael would have preferred to shirt Facundo also, hence why he went after Evan Wick but now that's fallen through, I can't see that being the case. Not going to lie, seeing Dean Hamiti his first match gives me some confidence for Facundo. Hamiti beat the Buffalo wrestler 18-5, which is impressive for a freshman making a debut. Hamiti got in deep against Alex at Junior Nationals and could never finish. Similarly, Bernie Truax (4th at 174 last year) couldn't take Alex down either in their free match (but he did push him out 4 times)

Alex's defense is there, he's going to be ridiculously annoying for anyone to wrestle. Question is if he can learn enough offense the next few months to be ready for March. I'm hoping he has a breakthrough like Carter did because Carter was wrestling like an AA at the end of his true freshman year. 165 is deep, very deep but we can't just through in the towel at that weight because we want to preserve Alex going forward. Maybe if it were a punt year, which it obviously isn't.

Cant argue with any of that. I’m not concerned much at all from neutral position. I suspect if anything we will see struggles getting out from bottom which is really nothing unusual for a true freshman no matter how elite of a prospect he is.

The nice thing about this year is Cael has the chance to get Facundo/SVN almost 20 matches if he wants before making a decision on them. Smoke says Barraclough and Matt Lee will be our 149/165 early.

Matt Lee agreed that he was going to 165 the same day that Joe confirmed 157.

I'm curious how Matt is looking. From what I know, he was the least heralded of the Lee brother but was somewhat of a late bloomer. He took a greyshirt year in 2019-2020 and didn't wrestle any matches last year. He did wrestle Juniors and went 2-2 at 70KG (with Barraclough)

After previously announcing that he’d be done with college wrestling, Central Michigan All-American Drew Hildebrandt has entered the transfer portal. Hildebrandt is a 2x AA at 125 pounds and took fourth a year ago. Obviously a spot of need for Penn State in 2021-22
Mineo is reporting he is headed to the good guys. I rather prefer this to all the drama associated with Cruiseliner.

Good pick up that accomplishes most of what Suriano would have likely accomplished. With some big names returning to 125, 4th again might be a tall task, but he should definitely be right there for the back half of the podium and who knows who actually ends up back at 125.

Style-wise, it's an interesting fit at PSU. Kind of an anti-psu guy. Stage 5 clinger. Very long and a great leg rider, but lacks go to offense on his feet. Not much bonus, but keeps himself in every match with his mat wrestling. Quite scrappy. Been watching and rooting for him for a long time. He's an indiana kid.

I wouldn't expect him to be close to being a serious contributor at this point. Even with his late blooming, he wasn't anywhere near the level of his brothers. He's a guy who I think can maybe qualify and win some matches at ncaa's in year 4 or 5 if he can find his way into the lineup. With that being said, we haven't gotten to see much of him, so who knows where he's at right now.

Any idea if Drew is even in wrestling shape? I thought I had heard his original plan was to forgo this year. Just hoping he isn't 15 lbs over, out of 'wrestling' shape. I assume he would also be a January transfer, granted if he were to announce he could start hitting it in the NLWC right away, but it won't be like he can get 15 matches under his belt ahead of bigs?

I have little doubt Suriano is far from 125 wrestling shape and weight.

I would be very happy with Drew as our 125 but he would definitely be a decent drop off from Suriano, who feels like a lock to make the finals against Spencer (though obviously Vito and/or Glory could beat him as well) and Nick could potentially pick up bonus the first 3 rounds even. That being said, as someone said, the last few months basically showed how much of a loose cannon he is. He was at Penn State training and then just left to shop around a little more. Knowing Nick, you worry if he has one bad argument with Cael that he just quits the team right before Big Tens to prove a point.

Drew is not a lock to AA but certainly would have a great shot for it. Hopefully he learns a few moves in neutral in our room but at this point (especially with just a few months), he kind of is what he is, a very strong pesky rider. Last year, 125 was super wide open at those 2 to 8 spots. This year, with Glory, Vito and (maybe) Nick coming back, 5 to 8 are open. Alas, he would be a HUGE upgrade over a true freshman Steen. My guess is Drew gave Cael a deadline to let him know if he wants him in because after a while, he might not even be in shape for the season if he doesn't start training. Don't think it's worth losing Drew (if he's ready to commit) to gamble on Nick.

Extra points for you with the stage 5 clinger reference…

Well if we don't get him I hope he stays in the B1G. At least that would ensure at least 1 match against Spencer in the conference tourney. Nationals will most likely happen but there are scenarios where he could get knocked off in the semis. Then again if that happened he wouldn't have beaten Spencer anyway.

If he goes to tOSU them one might think tOSU has some serious connections to NIL as it seems evident Nicky is shopping for the highest bidder.

One thing I think psu fans will like about Drew if he does end up transferring in is that he's very consistent. He wrestles a lot of close matches, so you always think he's going to take a bad loss at some point, but he basically never loses to anybody who isn't a top 10ish guy.

I'm kinda pulling for Drew. If he is serious about coming to PSU to help the team and win a championship for himself then I hope Cael grabs him now. Get him to State College and let him roll with Gilman, RBY and Howard as much as possible. I have nothing against Nick, I actually feel he would bring more to the table as far as the team championship goes but if hes shopping his services then let him shop and go with the kid that wants to be here for the the team and glory and not the cash. Of course theres always a chance Drew thinks he can do something with NIL and the reason he wants to be here but I kinda doubt it.

FWIW Willie just posted to Rokfin his crystal ball predictions for this season. Has Hildebrandt at 125 for us and PSU beating Iowa for the team title. Nicky Push-ups at ISU as well.

Money drives everything. That's the reality of the way we live. Im sure Steen is constantly wondering when he is going to get pushed out. Probably makes it hard to focus on just training to compete for the year.

I mean this with all due respect to Gary, but if that's true, then PSU probably isn't the place for him.

You aren't guaranteed a starting spot. There's going to be a guy coming to "push you out" almost every year. I think it's much more likely that pressure is what drives these guys to focus on training and getting better. Not the detriment you seem to think (hope) it is.

Think you're being funny? I imagine you don't listen to his show so you didn't hear Willie say Tom and Cael are both the coaches doing everything by the books actually in terms of NIL and not making promises during the recruiting process.

Also, I think Steen is pretty well aware of the deal of joining PSU wrestling (like any top program) that if the opportunity comes to add to the room, the coaches will do it as that's what they're being paid to do. In terms of focus, maybe get to know the kid better, the kid spent an entire offseason lifting and training intensely in case his name is called as a true freshman.

Like I said in the "other" thread. Since Nico graduated Cael has been trying to find bodies to score points at 125. Rightfully so. It certainly hurt when Nick got his feelings hurt and headed to New Jersey. The door is revolving so maybe Nick will find a way back in. Or Teske, Or maybe they get Hildebrandt. Or someone else

Last time you went down this path, Willie put you in timeout.

I really like the juxtaposition of your "Gee...I hope he's able to concentrate on training without having to worry about those mean coaches bringing in competition for his spot" comments with the quote in your signature.
