At some point it will be interesting to see the impact on team weight class integrity. With potential a year away from formal practices supervised by coaches, no nutritionist looking over your shoulder, I venture to guess more than a few AA caliber guys blow up during the layoff. I have to some extent.
Elite kid's are famous for their dedication and worth ethic, but they are also still young, some still growing human beings.
I don't have many worries at this time with our guys short of Robbie Howard, at least that is not since VJ is gone. Just imagine having Cenzo and AB having a wrestleoff.
Assuming this season gets flushed, you will have some kids pretty much on their own from this past March to as far as a year from next October away from the rigors of highschool or college matches, practices, and the influence of coaches on a daily basis.
Cutting weight is a mental and physical challenge and without the reward of hitting the mat under the lights keeping you motivated, well there you have it.
The consequences for some teams will be unpleasant surprises once kids arrive back on campus and full practices resume.
I am hoping we are still in the running for Richie Figs as our future long term 125. I can also see the dilemma where this year is a punt or a complete loss, Robbie and RBY redshirt and next year they both come in as 133s in 2021 with my main man Beau Bartlett at 141. In this scenario you can't simply bump RBY and Nick Lee up because of Beau. None will have redshirts remaining. Maybe someone can then grey shirt, but I think you can only grey shirt your first pre-enrollment pre-Redshirt year. I think Alex Facundo is an example where a grey shirt may now be mandatory, lest we lose him to transfer.
I think coaches should lobby the NCAA for an extra redshirt year for all kids affected this season if it does not progress to completion, I think it might also open the door to wrestling getting a boost in the 9.9 as new kids come in the door with older kids staying one more year than planned. I would love to see at least 3 more full scholarships. With woman's wrestling starting to build there might prove an opportunity for that adjustment in the future as well.
All squads will face the same set of issues and their will be surprises. I can definitely see the risk of some AA caliber kids ending up second string for a season or two as a result, maybe even forcing some portal action. Cael is better than anyone at balancing a roster, but we have always had a soft spot or two or three on the roster. We could see an era where all of the top teams have an unplanned gap or a stud or two on the bench.
