anyone see him talking re the condition of teams this time of year? his comments were:

  • key to success is being healthy - not just avoiding obvious injuries where players are out, but where guys are playing but well below 100%. this does seem kind of obvious. he said while every team may be beat up a bit and injuries are in the game, not every team is in the same spot in spent energy.
  • he also talked about schedules and how some teams can get in a long run of games requiring 4 qtr effort to win. he said these can really wear on a team physically, mentally and also the coaches. you need games where the team can win handily even with a poor effort. without breaks in games it can become a grind.

How does he even remember that? I thought he was too forgetful to continue coaching.

So, it would seem that a team that has to face a gauntlet schedule -- oh, for example, having to play 3 or 4 ranked teams in succession -- is at a distinct disadvantage.

Funny how that random-scheduling Big Ten computer somehow manages to give that blue-and-white stepchild annual schedules where it faces Iowa, MSU, and the 2 Darlings in consecutive weeks.

And next year we end with Maryland and Rutgers smh

He has a brain cyst that causes severe headaches. Hadn't heard about the forgetfulness.
Ohio State released its Independent Investigation Summary of Findings into how head coach Urban Meyer handled domestic violence allegations against former assistant coach Zach Smith. The report revealed Meyer 'had significant memory issues' and may have deleted old texts.

MSU sucks this year. That was alike an off week.

no doubt and we didn't get any favors this year. if you looked at the schedule at the start of the season, we had might have expected some breaks that did not happen. sPitt was expected to be an easier game, and Maryland at the time was the game of the century for them so did require emotional energy even in a blowout. then the only "off week" turned out to be Purdue - which was originally expected to be a tester. it was physically for sure a score was deceptive and we had starters still playing in 4th qtr. rest of games were all 4 qtr deals - even Indy. Meyer's comments certainly apply to us. this team has had to face a string of difficult games. this is where the CFB playoff committee does not take this into account. the deal with SOS but not the gauntlet. they also measure "game control" in terms of several factors including but not limited to % time leading in games, % time when > 1 score lead and Qtr where starters largely pulled - according to the Oregon AD on the committee.

I think he's spot on. The persona of our football team isn't anything like I would have imagined it to be had you told me we'd be headed into the Ohio State game with just 1 loss. You can tell the team is worn out, Franklin sounds beat in his press conferences, and the team has looked increasingly sluggish down the stretch.

Minus the opening drive of the 2nd half, (Indiana's fake punt debacle) they scored on their final 3 possessions. Executing a long drive in the 4th quarter was the only way we were going to win that game. Hats off to the offense for pulling out all the stops, picking up those 4th downs, and punching it in to seal the deal.

The way your schedule sets up is one of the most important factors in a team's ability to run the table and win a national championship. Who you play, when you play them, and where you play them can be the difference between losing 3 league games, or winning them all.

Officiating has a lot to do with it too... especially this season. Few calls go the other way, we lose to Michigan, few calls go the other way we beat Minnesota.

That's what makes Ohio State so impressive. They haven't had to break a sweat this year. And there's only 2 games left

I watched his report. Very good, and fair.

Urban is a cheater - both to the sport and to his family. I don't really gaf about what he has to say about anything at this point.

Part of me wonders though if there's a counter to that, perhaps more psychological than physical, where the adversity "seasons" or conditions a team.

What's all this laying around $hit. Have we all forgotten the 1981 Lions, they had just completed a gauntlet of West Virginia, NC State, Miami, Alabama and Notre Dame and faced a number 1 Pitt led by Dan F'in Marino and won by a score that is part of Penn State lore. Fields.....he is a dead man, Dobbins.... Dead, Young .... Dead!!!! Let's Go! What the F happened to the Penn State I used to know, where's the guts where's the spirit!!!!

Probability question.
If you put 14 teams in a bowl, what are the chances that OSU and Michigan always get picked to play last?

Well, I’m no math whiz, so I’m just taking a wild guess here ... 100%?

Why do the other 12 programs not question such an arrangement that favors only 2?

Well, if we make it to the BTCG, we should show up well rested. On the other hand, I like Wisconsin's chances in a rematch against OSU this year since OSU will be coming off physical and emotional games with PSU and UM, and UW will have "revenge" on their side and OSU will be overconfident.

Did some checking on Big schedules since 2000, NOT counting Championship games.
Michigan has played Wisconsin 12 times, Iowa 12
Ohio St. has played Wisconsin 13 times, Iowa 8
Penn St. has played Wisconsin 12 times, Iowa 15
In the next 5 years .
Michigan will play Wisconsin 3 times, Iowa 1 time.
Ohio St. will play Wisconsin 2 times, Iowa 2 times.
Penn St. will play Wisconsin 1 time, Iowa 3 times.
Conversely in the SEC Alabama since 2000, again 2000 has played Georgia and Florida 5 times each.
I consider Wisconsin and Iowa , and Georgia and Florida respectively the toughest cross divisional opponents. Maybe some other foes will emerge but i kind of doubt it, recruiting etc.
The Schedulers, know what they are doing.

Totally understand and agree with this...frankly if you look at both Clemson's and Alabama's schedule (sans LSU) they are jokes...

Pretty much playing cupcakes during the entire season...Clemson because the ACC is awful and Alabama this year mainly because SEC is down ...

Haha!

Monlion is right. Psychotic...but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. We could fight them with conventional weapons but that would take years and cost millions of lives. No, this situation calls for a stupid and futile gesture on my part: take the 18 points and bet heavy on Penn State; then, make a public prediction that not only does Penn State cover, they win. That's right: W-I-N.

Yes, I hear the world laughing at me. That's OK. The laughter ends tomorrow, baby. History awaits.
