US Open

Nick Lee, Joseph, Brooks and Cassar right now.

Joe Lee and Beard at Southern Scuffle right now.

All other healthy rostered guys at the Wilkes Open.

Is Nolf going?

Does a 2020 NCAA title qualify you for OTT? If so, then I assume that's what Hall is banking on and will fall back to the Last Chance if necessary.

Maybe.

Yes, a 2020 NCAA Championship earns qualification to the Olympic Trials.

To tie my two previous questions together, if Nolf doesn't go to this and isn't qualified yet and somehow Mark doesn't win the NCAA title, would they be fighting for the same final spot at Last Chance or is there some other tournament they could earn their spot through? I know there are a couple international tournaments but they aren't necessarily opens where they can just choose to go right?

Well, last chance will qualify 2 at each weight, since they nixed Schultz this year. Is it after NCAAs though?

It would depend. The Olympic TT are a week or so after NCAAs. That means if their was a last chance qualifying event then it is in season and mark is a full 174 lb. if he were to battle Nolf for 74kg at that last chance you are expecting mark to make a mid season cut to 162.8. And then go back up to 174 and then cut back down in a week. So no they would not be fighting for the same final spot

For the 83’rd time, Mark Hall is “never gonna make 74 again” HIS WORDS

I kinda get the feeling Marky put the team title on the top of his priority list this year. Very admirable.

Doesn’t get much more last chance than that.
The interesting one is Rivera hes the guy at 57kg for Puerto Rico but PanAms is the week between Big 10 and NCAA top 2 at PanAms qualify for Olympics. He can wait until May 2 and try the last World Olympic qualifier but that will be a loaded field

They talked about that on FRL this morning and apparently he is skipping Pan Ams bc of Big10's and will try the last Olympic qualifying tournament. Would be surprised if he made the Olympics that way as only the winner makes the Olympics.

I thought that too for a while but he's either 74 or not going because he's not going to 86 (189). You have a tone here like I'm an idiot so explain to me, what is he doing? wrestling 74 kg, 86 kg or not at all?

I clearly laid it out in order, Mark would only care about the last chance if he doesn't win NCAA. I make no expectation of him cutting then going back up since last chance is after NCAA.

And now if we can get past everyone trying to tell me how wrong I am about Mark, I think the real news is this thread is Roar saying that Nolf is a maybe for Senior Nationals. So clearly the knee is bothering him. Hopefully he can be ready for last chance.

It’s not that your an idiot ;) but hahaha I’m just kidding. I think at this point mark would be a very slim chance almost 11 pounds in less than a week. Or gain 15 pounds in less than a week. My best guess is that mark wrestles 86 for the Olympics but wrestles at his current weight to make 79 for non Olympic years. I think mark expected to grow in height and at this point a cut to 74 would not be healthy nor would it be a good cut to 74

If you believe the guy, which I do, than I can only tell you what he ISNT doing, and that is “ever cutting to 74 again”.

I understand he said that. I've also said that I'm never doing many things again and then done them. Many people on here, probably one among them, speculated that he was going to take an Oly shirt. I said that he wouldn't because he doesn't have an Olympic weight. I was firmly told that his Olympic weight is 74kg.

Thanks for the update

Wanting to cut 11 pounds and being able to cut 11 pounds are two different things, the guy is a solid muscle for christ sakes, where the hell is he gonna lose 6 percent of his body weight?

I am willing to try gaining 15 lbs in less than a week. Pass the pie and on second thought, I will have another sandwich.

I weighed in at states at 105 on Saturday. On Monday my brother called and asked if I wanted to go to an open tournament with him and some of his Lehigh buddies. He wanted me to wrestle 115. I weighed 132 that Monday. But I made 115 by Friday.

I saw the updated list for the US Open entries that Flo put out and noticed that Logan Massa is going at 86kg. That seems strange.

Not for nothing, you fail to share your results. That’s great that you made weight but you don’t you don’t say how you fairer yet alone think about how’d you fair with an unhealthy gain/loss and then go up against top level athletes who have been training consistently around that weight for a year or more

Yikes, 17 lbs in 4 days for an in-shape low bodyfat athlete is possible, my hat is off to you.

That said dropping 13% of one's body weight that fast is not a recipe for athletic success 99% of the time. Dehydration and over rehydration after weighin being at the top of the list.

I feel like an out of shape fat pig these days at 6'2" 215 Lbs, and if I lost 13% in a week, I might have a tough time raising another draft beer to my lips.

I truly hope the current hydration and weight loss/descent rules have cut down on such drastic weight cutting. I once weighed in at 154 1/2 on a Monday morning and made 136 by Thursday afternoon. I have struggled with my weight all through adulthood. I would not be surprised if my drastic weight cutting throughout most of my wrestling career has negatively affected my weight control. All the weight cutting not only made the grind of wrestling almost unbearable, but it also created in me the unhealthy mental habit of viewing food as a reward or comfort.

Food as a reward or comfort?

That is a very unhealthy outlook, however I believe brain chemistry magically alters after the age of 30 and food slowly replaces more basic human desires. I still seem to have a problem with both 20+ years later

As with each passing day my self image moves inexorably further from the athlete I once was too .... more of.... It's hard to describe, why not just show you ... The ending berings it all together.

He didn't lose 13 percent in a week. He gained about 9.5 percent (from 105 to 115) in six days. Even at my age, I think I'm up to that challenge.

I didn't say I was proud of dieting like an idiot. We just didn't know any better back then. I coached youth wrestling for 20 years and I never allowed anyone to lose weight at all. At weigh-ins, my kids were often 5 pounds under. We never had someone miss weight - except one time. My son was having his greatest year. He wrestled the same weight all year, knocked off the returning Eastern National Champ at Districts. The week of Regions, he had a growth spurt. He was trying like crazy to make weight, but on Friday morning, he was 3 pounds over. Weigh-ins were all day Friday, so he had till 5pm to make weight. We went out to breakfast and I told him it's over. He ordered the entire menu. Oh, the kid he beat at Districts again won Eastern Nationals. Just one of those things.

My Dad was my club coach, so it was easier to make me cut weight to fill holes on a dual team than to abuse someone elses kid. I hated wrestling by the time I got to HS. After placing at State in AA my freshman and sophomore years, I didnt wrestle as a junior and senior. It wasnt until years later in the Marine Corps that I got back into wrestling on the All Marine team. My kids don't cut weight. Ive been known to make them eat breakfast before weigh ins. Its just not worth it with kids. They'll have plenty of time in HS to be miserable.
