US Open

It would be nice if someone with more knowledge than I have would create a sticky or google doc showing who is qualified for the Olympic Team Trials, I know a few are qualified but not sure which weight they would go, but I would fine this very helpful.

if anyone created this I would buy them a beer at the Trials!

it is in a thread on this site, was posted within the past month.
but I don't remember which thread

According to Flo, the qualifiers so far are
1. any 2017, 2018, or 2019 Senior Freestyle USA World Championships participant and/or Final World Team Trials Champion

2. Any 2019 Junior World champion

3. Any 2019 U23 World Champion

4. The top American finisher at the Bill Farrell Memorial who was not already qualified

That means the individuals who have qualified so far are:

57 kg

Thomas Gilman, Daton Fix, Nahshon Garrett, Joe Colon, Tyler Graff, Seth Gross

65 kg

Zain Retherford, Jordan Oliver

74 kg

James Green, Jordan Burroughs, Kyle Dake, David Carr, Isaiah Martinez

86 kg

David Taylor, Pat Downey, J'Den Cox (probably here but could be at 97), Alex Dieringer

97 kg

Kyle Snyder, Mike Macchiavello, Bo Nickal (probably here but could be at 86)

125 kg

Gwiz, Mason Paris, Gable Steveson

After all the talk of the schedule changes (no Keystone Classic, no Southern Scuffle, a month off between duals, etc.) and lineup changes to facilitate participation in the Olympic Trials process, it seems a bit anticlimactic to only see two regular starters (Cassar and Lee) wrestling at the US Open along with one new and unexpected starter/freshman (Brooks) and an unanticipated transfer (Kirkviliet).

No Joseph (anyone know why?). No Hall (perhaps due to the cut and hoping to qualify by winning NCAAs). No Berge (recovery from concussion?). No RBY (between weights?). No Joe Lee; no Beard; no Seth Nevills (all too young?)

No Nolf (injury?). No Taylor (injury recovery and already qualified). No Retherford (qualified; competed recently).

No Snyder (qualified).

Oh well, there will still be some good matches.

I meant one easy place to find them and updated as the open, NCAA's and Last Chance qualifier happens. This comment will get lost a few days from now.

I created it using @CholleyVandine 's list, I guess I owe myself, and him a beer!

On the last episode of Flo I listened to they mentioned that the Farrell it was the top placer that had not already qualified, but supposedly the Open is not that way. For example, JO, who has already qualified is going, if he takes a top 4 or 5 (not sure which) spot he knocks someone out from possibly qualifying. They called it "stealing" a spot and supposedly it is a pretty common past practice.
I didn't know that.... but others probably do.

Top-5.

For the last-chance qualifier in March, it's top-2, and those already qualified are not allowed to compete.

I was under the impression Joseph and Nolf can register the day of. This doesn’t mean neither are going to the Open just because they aren’t registered yet

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that registration closes today. And other guys in the NLWC registered together today. Past practice has been to register everyone at once.

ONLINE registration ends at midnight tonight. Walk-in registrations are allowed, I believe it costs a bit more.

Just noticed PSU_Pride provided info too.

Aaron Brooks vs. Sam Brooks in round 1? Yes, please.

Why no cenzo, is a weight thing, injury or just trying to focus on winning a national title and thus qualifying.

I hope that Cenzo does go, not saying it will be easy like a D3 kid, but he could easily finish in the top five of that field. He could win it. Top 2 at LCQ is probably tougher (if he doesn’t win NCAAs). Nolf too. If both are healthy, of course.

Last chance qualifier will have more pressure (it's called the "last chance" for a reason), but won't necessarily be tougher. No one that's earned a spot can go, and for any wrestler that's battling more than minor aches and pains now, the three months of recovery/training is huge.

Just to clarify: If these seeds hold, then I'd like to see that match too.
But the 'pre-seeds' list isn't all inclusive.
For example: 57Kg has 12 pre-seeds listed, but there's actually 25 guys pre-registered [not including Suriano or Nico -- are they going too??].
Anyway, not sure how many will be in the 86Kg bracket, but both Brooks' may have some work to do before meeting up.
Hoping they do:cool:

The competition will be easier, but the margin for error will also decrease. That’s what I was trying to say, anyway. No self-4s in the quarterfinals.

Question I always forget to ask. What goes into wrestling under titan mercury? Do all those guys literally train together somewhat frequently, or is it more of a sponsor thing that doesn’t really compare to the nlwc, and Ohio rtc? Also would that be something the staff wouldn’t allow if someone wrestled at NLWC and had titan mercury sponsor them?

I’m told Heflin beat Sammy Brooks at the trials, so they may switch spots. Giving Aaron Heflin later possibly. They are all tough so, it doesn’t matter.
Heflin is a much tougher match up imo. Brooks is still small at 86 kg and a leg attacker. I wouldn't want to be underneath Heflin at all if there's a strength discrepancy. Even DT had a ton of issues with his chest lock.

S. Brooks is a bull too, and more dynamic offensively, but I think Aaron would have a much easier time scoring on him.
