Please stop mentioning former PSU greats and other great players for that matter NOW for our staff.
Most if not all of the time great players do not make great coaches.
The ones who have, have been the exception rather than the rule.
Back ups often spend quite a bit of time standing with the coaches and see the game from their perspective while the stars are out there,

This would apply to all sports.

In football not unusual for a back up QB to get into coaching and does well. In baseball it can be a back up catcher.

Mike Ditka football, Billy Cunningham basketball, Joe Torre baseball and Larry Robinson Hockey all who went on to head coaching were exceptions rather than the rule. Same applies for assistant coaches.
