Watching BTN's PSU visit?

This should be good.
Everybody did well. Very articulate.
Interesting summary. After watching 2 practices the three BTN guys were not sold on the O line. Not surprising I guess. Otherwise they sounded much like the comments on this board. Lots of talent., Lots of young talent. D as good or gooder than last year. O, well we will have to see. Yea I guess.

Thanks for the summary. The comments on the offensive line are obviously disappointing with the first game just a couple of weeks away.

I was surprised at DiNardo's take on the offensive line's improvement. He really did not seem impressed with what he saw.

You all can continue to criticize me for being a doubting Thomas about our lack of talent on the OL, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they are only marginally better than last year, as they have a little more experience. I know that many of them were 4 star rivals recruits out of HS, but they really didn't seem to be able to hold many blocks last year (without illegally holding).

And, of course, they've lost the two experienced guys to graduation.

Stars along the OL do not mean as much compared to skill positions. I still think they will be a litt better than last year. I'm not expecting some huge leap though.

I did not think their analysis was insightful at all. They just stated the story line.

I will take marginal improvement. With a marginally better oline last year, we beat Michigan, Illinois and Maryland and go 10-3 instead of 7-6.

With just about any improvement in the offense this year, we are a 10-2 or 9-3 team.
Remember, we did beat tO$U cheaters.

Both players, Hack and Jordan Lucas, and both coaches represented PSU well. Marginal improvement may be all we need. They can continue to improve through non-conference schedule.

Cmon people. If you were the head coach and you knew that the BTN knew/ thought your OL sucked, would you tell them(OL) to play their best in front of the media or would you instruct them to stumble for the camera?

Our OL will be better than last year and will be better than what the BTN observed.

What would Franklin et so have to gain by showcasing what we have? Pre-season plaudits from a group of demonstrated pinheads?

The BTN isn't our friend and I think Franklin gets this.

Anyone looking for insight from DiNardo is as dumb as he is......my dog would probably provide more

That said. Anyone who's followed this team at all knows the offensive line will likely still be a year or two away. Probably a bit better than last year, but the most likely scenario is still pretty poor.....but gotta hope for the best until we see in September

The ugliest part of the squad will likely be the PK and P........ But it is the offensive line that has the most impact

The BTN isnt our friend? Another example of xenophobia coming from our fans. The world is not conspiring against the Lions, contrary to the paranoia sometimes exhibited.

I would have them running into each other with their helmets on backwards. I would have them playing ping-pong and having three-legged races. I am serious. I would in no way present the notion to the media that anyone involved in the organization had a chance at a clue.

This is pink locker room stuff but this skullduggery has its place. I remember when I was in HS the head fb coach put the rosters in the paper for the pre-season football local preview and in the home gameday programs all messed up. He didn't have half the kids' names right, and all their measurements were upside down as was their class year. He figured he wasn't going to help some rival coach who did his scouting in the local paper or in the program. The smallest kid on the team at 5'6 or 7 was listed out of position as a 288# guard, the big solid TE was listed as 5'7, 147#. This is probably a violation of all sorts of PIAA rules but nobody ever called him on it that I ever heard of.

Maybe a good reminder to keep our expectations in check for the OL. Can't expect dramatic improvement overnight. Think of UM and its woeful OL the last several years. Every year, their fans insisted the OL would somehow be better than the previous year, but every year, they continued to disappoint. Herb Hand will build a top-notch line, but it's a process and we remain patient.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. CJF is really going to wast precious practice time by telling the OL to play poorly when the media is there? Really?????

While I get being hopeful for an improved OL, some of you guys act like it a sure thing. The opposite is true, in my opinion, and they won't be proven to be improved until we keep Hack clean and run the ball effectively.

Agree with your conclusion, but not so sure on why.

The OL will be better. Four starters coming back this year vs. one last year? I'll take those numbers every time.

Only saw a bit of the show, but Palmer isn't doing it for me yet. I think Franklin is giving him every chance, but I'm thinking there will be some shuffling here shortly. Maybe not. Maybe Franklin decided that Palmer will get the reps and that's that.

Beyond that, I wouldn't put much stock in what BTN guys gleen from watching "scrimmaging" at practice! Acting like these tools have "expert eyes" worthy of an NFL OL Scouting Assignment is beyond amusing....there's a reason Jerry Dinardo went from destroying LSU's program to Indiana (before getting quickly fired!) to the BTN booth where he loves to self-promote that he is "God's Gift" to football coaching (LMFAO!).

Anybody who puts much stock into what these babbling homer b1g Turd bafoons have to say is truly a bigger jack-wagon tool than the source they are using for their thesis about PSU's OL this year (btw, ever notice how many of these tools are FLO head-bobbers? They love to try to claim that Coach Franklin is responsible for the complete joke of an OL he was left by FLO - including the fact that Coach Franklin had to convert two DL with zero CFB experience playing OL just to field a 2-Deep Rooster!). Beyond absurd to continually claim that they won't be better this year with significantly more experience and infinitely better depth where the entire line doesn't have to be reshuffled when there is even a minor injury.

I know that many of them were 4 star rivals recruits out of HS

4* Mahon
3* Mangiro, Gaia, Nelson, Wright
2* Laurent, Dowrey

Add the fact that Mangiro is the only senior and it's easy to see why people are concerned about our OL.

One real issue of concern for me is IF the OL is not somewhat better the TEs will have to stay in to block and be less of an offensive threat. In addition VERY concerned about RB blocking to pick up blitzes.
Well, we will know quite a bit when we play Temple. They are actually the "highest" rated team we will play in our first six.
If that is true and the OL plays "good enough" we may be pretty good through the pre-season :)

Think about what happened last year on the OL for a minute. They start and the staff already knows that the depth is razor thin. Then the senior leader goes down with an injury and is out almost the entire year. Then the starting LT gets banged up and plays hurt and probably tentative or at least not to get hurt the rest of the year. Then the other young guys get shuffled around week in and week out just to have a team fielded. They didn't have much experience and now you are asking them to line up all over the place to fill in for injuries.

I seriously have no idea how that situation did not cause a losing record last year. It is actually pretty amazing. Particularly considering that there was only 1 WR not in his first year on the field and that guy was a SOPH. These were not like any other times for this program. Even in the early 2000s slump we had depth and experience. The NCAA tried to destroy our program. How we didn't end up with even 1 losing season out of that is pretty much a miracle.

Now for this year, 4 of 5 OL starters return and the WRs all return and our first round QB returns and both the WRs and RBs are seriously infused with players who have skill sets that simply we didn't have last year. I can't see how you don't get improvement on offense. it could be a quantum leap in year 2 of a new system with these still young but now experienced players. I think we will see good improvement but not quite the light bulb that went on between '93 and '94. Either way, it will translate to more wins.
