1)Dropped 25 plus balls (mostly upperclassmen, only a few byfreshmen), would have added about 400 more yards, many more TDs and about 10% more to McSorley's pass percentage, and led to some blowouts, including against Ohio St. This is getting better as more freshman receivers like Hamler and Dotson and Freirmuth are taking over.

2)Missed recovering fumbles (? maybe 7)caused by hard hitting defense, with players flailing around and doing anything but recovering--would have blown out Iowa. Just fall on the damn ball.

3)Missed tackles normally made by Penn State linebackers and DB's (fourth quarter Ohio St), even walk ons---this is getting better, especially as the more talented freshman LBs are playing more.

I saw this Defense start playing like a Penn State defense last week in the cold rain. I have seen Gross-Matos and Shareef Miller and Shaka Toney take heads off like the D of old. Cam Brown is finally tackling better. John Reed is starting to tackle like his old self and Garett Taylor hits hard.

Stop thinking about the M hype train--just play your game Penn State, like the first 3 quarters against Ohio St--let it all hang out as the great Joepa said, and Pogo Possum says Trace is going to salute the Quiet house goodbye and get revenge for 2 yrs ago!! Go State!!

Besides the drops, we also had 6 (I think) TD passes called back on penalty in the first 3 games. We didn't need them, and usually scored on those drives anyway, but those penalties killing big plays was something that needed to be cleaned up, and it has been.

We've shown that we can clean up our mistakes. We just have to do it on the field. Tomorrow would be a great time to do it!

You missed the McSorley air to ground and ground to air missles .. adding another 200 yards to the missed opportunities. I am tired of this guy getting a pass because of his runs....he has also done a bunch of idiotic things like running out of bounds to stop the clock....calling the snap too early... and phucking up the RPO read to a stud like Sanders. Seriously, why is he treated as a rookie by the fan base?!

Phuck you gaybo. He is a 4th year starter at QB not RB. He needs poise to raise his game this year. If you are in love with him, that is not a factor in measuring football on field QB performance. I credited him for his running ability. Now stop blowing him in your posts. It's pathetic.

I've mostly agreed with your posts in the past Rip, I ask you as gentleman to gentleman who both have grandchildren, would you remove your post. I would feel really bad if one of our students read this.
Thanks

Look. I love this young man for his grit, competitiveness and fearlessness. His next step to greatness is not pressing but applying poise and confidence to his short passing game. I want him to reach the highest plateau of QB performance.... Because I like him. But all I read about here are the drops. Perhaps, having been a WR, when the balls are thrown in the dirt or over you arms by 10 yards over and over again, you lose focus and concentration as a receiver and drop passes when, oh my God, they are catchable. The criticism on this board is Imbalanced. McSorley needs to calm down and lead with poise. Everyone would be better off if he weren't so wired up...including him. I want to see that for him and his teammates and PSU.
No one is above constructive criticism on a real team. I am % McSorley and % PSU. I don't need some jackass calling me a SCUMMER because I care enough to be honest.

I've been called a jackass by some of the best, including my father in law "Pop". I don't know what a "Scummer" is, so please don't throw words out there as if they are initiated by me. Both of us have spent many years on this earth, you should be looking at Trace as a work in progress. Things will work out for this team, if they don't, I'll send you my email address and you can send me all of the slings &arrows as you wish. I know you are a good guy Rip, I've read many of your posts. Tonight sounds like you have a burr under the saddle, we all experience that occasionally.
Good night, let's get ready for tomorrow.

I want the WRs to catch more passes and I want Trace to play better. If the drops cost Trace 10% on his comp percentage, that would put him at 62.5%. His completion % as a Sr. should be in the high 60s.

Does that make me a bad fan?

You can't spell scUM without U of M
hence a scummer would be a fan of U of M

He was pissed at being called out and hopefully over reacted.

TM is great player but hard deny his accuracy has been way off this year. More then one game this season he has looked awful throwing the ball.

Hopefully he can have a Washington type get against Mich. Dam he was good that game

You know that football is a team sport your post makes it seem like trace is the only one on the field. Hope you understand this concept of 11 players on the field. Sheesh. Drink more beer during the game. If your that upset. Works for me

Big difference between a bad fan and an a-hole. Your criticism is done without hostility, animus or direct attack. I’d argue that’s a good fan, pointing out faults that need to be addressed, but you did it without being a dick.

I fell victim to the hype. Star ratings etc. don't substitute for experience and leadership quality. We lost players to the NFL that were more integral to success than just their physical tools. I believe anyone that listed the players that graduated would have had serious concerns.
Part of the issue is that most coaches no longer "poor mouth" their teams. Back in the day (and JVP was great at this) preseason quotes would have been something like "we just hope to be competitive." " I don't know how any team could sustain the loses to graduation and hope to not suffer along the way." Etc. Now everything is hype and I am angry at myself for buying in. I should have known better.
This is a talented but inexperienced team. They responded to a narrow defeat (in what they thought was THE game) by thinking they could throw their helmets on the field for the rest of the season and cruise. MSU handed them their lunch and they lost all confidence. This is a team that is not sure of themselves. They become undisciplined (like on a goal line D....man to man coverage and allow a 340 lb lineman to catch a fake). If they learn to play their assignments and not free lance, they will get better.
I'm not expecting much today, in all honesty. Hopeful, yes! 8 or 9 wins would be about right, with careful consideration of all the changes after last year. Looking more and more like Pitt was a quality win and Iowa was as well. Iowa could win 9 or 10 games. Nothing will come easy for this group and that is the best lesson they can take into next season.

No need to poor mouth the players. They play up to their abilities and some make more mistakes than others. We either win or lose but no one dies or loses otherwise regardless of the outcome. It is just a game, mere entertainment.

I think the original post makes a good point. At very least, we know this team has a lot of upside potential that it hasn't tapped. They haven't played a great game yet this year. They beat Iowa despite a ton of dumb penalties and missed assignments and McSorley making a bunch of bad reads and bad decisions. Special teams have been awful all year.

If the team could somehow clean all this up, they could give MIchigan all they can handle today. The question is, how much is it possible to clean up in one week, this late in the season. It is unlikely that PSU in week 9 will improve all that dramatically from week 8. But it does happen.
