Welcome Jim Haslett to the PSU coaching staff

I seem to recall him either stepping on or kicking Terry Bradshaw's bald head during a bills-steelers game once.

Here it is in his own words:
Still, there was that time he stepped on Terry Bradshaw's head during his playing career. While he was coaching at the University of Buffalo in the early '90s, the Buffalo News asked him to revisit the incident, which got him kicked out of the 1979 finale.

"The bad thing is I'm from Pittsburgh and when I was growing up, Jack Lambert and Terry Bradshaw were my idols," Haslett said. "Anybody who has asked me if I did it on purpose, I would say I slipped or something. But the truth is, I knew if they scored again we were never going to beat them. So one of the players accidentally ripped his helmet off, and his head was exposed so I kicked him. It wasn't the best thing to do. My family was getting into fights in the stands. I couldn't go home for a couple off-seasons."

I remember that game. It was inside the 10 yd line and Bradshaw was out of bounds from my recollection. Football was a much different game back then. Way more violent. I miss that stuff... :)

HUH? since when does the NCAA allow 'consultants"? He must be unpaid.

There are limits om how many coaches can be on the field and how many can recruit. There are no limits on how many "non-coaching" people they can hire. If you want to make a few bucks without having to recruit or go to practice this isn't a bad semi-retirement gig.

maybe but they are not allowed on the field to coach .
Yeah. The NCAA is right on top of that....nothing going to evade their watchful eyes.

That's why these 20 man "non-coaching" staffs are comprised of guys with administrative skills, as opposed to guys with coaching backgrounds.

No, but you see them up in booths on gamedays I'm pretty sure. Bama has 27 other coaches in addition to the 8 coaches on the staff. A couple are GA's, but they still have 20+ admin type coaches with various titles. Maybe PSU has the same, but I have my doubts.

Scroll down to football staff. Wow.

For you older PGH guys, Avalon HS grad.

Yeah, he was a great high school player. If he'd gone to a bigger high school, he would have definitely gotten a lot more attention. As it was, I think he went to IUP.

Avalon never had more than a couple of hundred people at their games, and the teams were always mediocre. They merged with Bellevue into Northgate sometime in the mid/late 70's.

Anyone know if Franklin's and Hasllet's paths cross before in the coaching world before this?

I believe his son is playing at IUP now. This may be a great way for Haslett to make some scratch, not be consumed (spend QT with family) and get some college experience at the same time.

My first thought was tryout for the DC job if Shoop leaves. I don't think he leaves for another DC job, but he may want to try the head coach gig again. If so, this is a way to see if there's a "fit" with the staff, and get the benefit of his football knowledge.

That said, I think we need an offensive minded consultant. We need more minds trying to figure out ways to get through the next year or two on that side of the ball.

if you remember this is what Rich Rod got in trouble for at both scum, and WVU. Having these guys on the field to coach/ hold dummies. IIRC the only guys allowed on the field for practice, is the HFC, the 9 full time asst coaches. The acutally GA's (which is 3 or 4?) and a true Volunteer coach, who receivers $0 in pay from any source relative to their work with football. The other guys (the this and that's asst director of FB ops etc) are not allowed on the field.
on game day, I believe the S & C coach and their staffs are allowed on the sideline. I don't know who the NCAA allows up in the booth. Maybe Uncle Lar will chime in, he knows for sure.

Maybe CJF just has him breaking down film and offering ideas. That said, I'd sure hate to be the D Cord and have him looking over my shoulder, unless of course he makes it clear he is just biding time until his next pro job.

This is exactly what is happening, I believe. It would stink if you were a defensive assistant coach who was hoping to be next man up....

I can't buy this....Shoop has committed to Franklin and gotten a justifiable raise because of it. Hasslet more likely to have another job long (if he wants one) before Shoop.

You guys are nuts. This has nothing to do with Shoop. Haslett is just a consultant. He's not coaching or recruiting. Sheesh.

Coach Franklin never sleeps. Always looking to get better. Why not just love it, instead of trying to find something to worry about? Want to understand Franklin better, just look at Urban Meyer. Which conference did they each coach in before their current gigs? What are they both maniacs about every hour of every day except maybe game day? What side of the ball are we focusing on recruiting, huge 5 -4 star talent until LOI Day? Who wouldn't be negative recruiting against us, citing NFL experience in house? Haslett starting to make more sense? Franklin never sleeps. Urban knows it and now so does Harbaugh and every other P5 coach that is trolling for the biggest fish. Jimmy H. may have to hire a few more Jersey family members. That High School coach might not be enough...hahaha!

They were a big rival of ours at Avonworth. Small school also, although home of Eugene Morris. Later to become "Mercury" Morris.

No, the NCAA isn't, but the other guys are. Coaches are notorious for ratting each other out.

Morris held the NCAA single season rushing record till some guy named O.J. Simpson broke it the following week.

Haslett went to IUP in the early seventies. I played handball at the IUP field house. He was just taking up the game to improve his eye to hand coordination because you need use both hands to be any good. Seemed like a real nice guy. My guess would be 73 or1974.
