What are you binge watching?

My wife and finished up the Soprano's last month on HBO go. Now staying in place, we just finished Ozarks on Netflix, which I highly recommend, and prior to that, Hunters on Amazon (another good one).

We tried one of those Game of Thrones / Vikings rip offs..... that didn't work, then there was this show set in England about some somewhat attractive gal and her misadventures. That didn't work either. So much so, I don't even know the name. It was on Amazon.

We have at least 8 more days..........
Downton Abbey, Ripper Street, Broadchurch., Marcella, Marco Polo, Medici, Jack Ryan, See, Game of Thrones, Counterpart, Frontier, Holmes & Watson, The Morning Show, The Expanse, Lillehammer, The Vikings, Longmire, right now Murdoch Mysteries. The are all watched with Old Fashions, Scotch Rocks, Gin & Vodka Tonics, Mohitos (blackberry basil). Between binge watching and binge drinking it’s been quite a year!

A new season of Bonding came out the other week on Netflix. Episodes are 20 minutes. Season 2 is done. It's not for everyone, but I find it humorous.

Just finished The Crew on Netflix with Kevin James. It was just okay. Kind of like The Ranch with a NASCAR theme.

We have been watching Turn on Netflix and really enjoy it. It is a series about the Culper Spy Ring in the Revolutionary war. We are through 3 or 4 seasons. Some great characters including Anna Strong, Benjamin Tallmadge, and my favorite, John Simcoe.

Same. IMHO it cannot be overstated how fantastic The Expanse on Amazon Prime is.
Season 5 of the Expanse wasn't so great. Just disjointed and drawn out. Season 6 is the last, so hopefully they can ramp up again.
Yea, I’ve been a huge champion of The Expanse anytime a discussion on great shows comes up but this 5th season is seriously meh. They took an amazing exploration / alien civilization story that was building over 4 seasons and then turned it right around into a bigly family drama / inner planet storyline. The main protomolecule plot was sidelined for Naomi’s story which at times was annoying and imo was a disservice to her character. Holden didn’t really do anything substantial and Alex/Bobby were in one place a majority of the time. Amos’s story was probably the most developed and best part of season 5. I’m not sure if this was shot pre or during the pandemic but it really seemed that Prime cut the show’s budget leading to this luke warm season.

To the point of the thread though I'll toss in:

Alone - 10 "contestants" are dropped with minimal gear in the Canadian wilderness - the last person to cry mercy wins $500k. Of the seasons I've watched some folks have lasted 2-3 months.

Watchmen (HBO Max) - One of the weirdest shows I've seen but still very very good.

I would agree that overall Season 5 was the least of the lot. IMHO Seasons 1-4 were so strong that 5 held my attention and am still very much looking forward to 6.

That said, Avasarala is/had been one of my favorite characters, and the writing for her was clearly at its weakest when she initially ascended to the Secretary General position. Here's hoping they don't "phone it in" again for her now that she's resumed the role.

I stumbled into this show a few weeks ago and binged it in a weekend. I really liked it but for some reason I could not find the power to recommend it to my mom.

Yeah, that's a reasonable point.... lol

I will admit that I'm smitten with Zoe Levin. Beautiful gal.

Watchmen is wonderful; not sure if you’re familiar with the source material or watched the movie adaptation from Zack Snyder, but it helps a lot in understanding some of the whys of their world. Great score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross too.

Just finished the first 2 seasons of Narcos. Very very good. Watched the first episode of season 3 ..... seemed like there exponentially more subtitles in that episode than any in the first 2 seasons?

Is that the case for all of season 3? It was a rather difficult to watch IMO with the way it was filmed and the subtitles

Son2 never saw The Wire. We’re gonna start this weekend
Opening scene: Snotboogie gets wasted.

[first lines]
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: So your boy's name was what?
Snot Boogie's Friend: Snot.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: You called the guy "Snot"?
Snot Boogie's Friend: Snot Boogie, yeah.
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Snot Boogie? He like the name?
Snot Boogie's Friend: What?
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: Snot Boogie?
[the kid does not answer]
Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty: This kid, whose mama went to the trouble of christening him Omar Isaiah Betts... You know, he forgets his jacket, so his nose starts running, and some asshole, instead of giving him a Kleenex, calls him "Snot". So he's Snot forever. Doesn't seem fair.
Snot Boogie's Friend: Life just be that way, I guess.

This always reminds me of the Tom Segura first 48 bit....”Your friends name was “dookieshoes”??”

NSFW (But hilarious):

Don’t watch it too quickly. It’s a series that needs to be savored. Tell your son to pay attention to the seemingly minor characters, Kima, Dee, Bodie, Prez, Wallace from the beginning. Flawed people in difficult circumstances doing the best they can.

Stephen King has said that Snoop was the most terrifying character he’d ever seen on television.

The season with the teachers is fantastic. I mean it really is life imitating art. Oh and speaking of that do not leave out Carcetti. ;)
I also really like the last season a lot more than others but then I was living in Mt. Vernon at the time and they were always filming around there so it was kind of neat.

I got caught up through season 5 of Peaky Blinders. The plot gets more complicated and convoluted each season, but I like how they tie in actual historical figures.

Looks like Season 6 plus a movie to end things.

One of my favorite jokes he does. Segura is great. When I recommend him to people that don't know him, this is the clip I send them.
His bit about alternative ways to learn Spanish (which is SUPER NSFW...."Ensalada pico mucho!!!!!") just absolutely slays me. His delivery is so consistently good that even when the words he is saying aren't hysterical, they way he says them makes you laugh.

This weekend:
  • I watched the Bee Gee's thing on HBO Max. I absolutely loved it. The early Bee Gees were really good singers and songwriters. They hit a lull and then hit on Saturday Night Feaver. The way their music transitioned and how they got there was fascinating. They had so many musical twists and turns. Then, they wrote and wrote and wrote for other artists. I always liked the Bee Gees and this gave me a much better understanding of their depth and musical legacy. If you are a fan of music, a must see.
  • I watched "Unhinged" with Russell Crowe. It isn't getting great reviews but I really liked it. RC is a hell of an actor and his rage is palpable. It kept me on the edge of my seat.
  • I started watching homeland. First two episodes are really well written and acted. I recall it won a lot of awards and I simply love Damien Lewis.
  • I caught the next two episodes of "The Pacific". Second time around for me with that series. I picked Remi Malik out early and always thought he stole the show. I am getting a lot more of the nuance to the series and simply love it in terms of bringing the horrors of war to light. What those men must have gone through! While the series is a bit disheveled and haphazard, the writing of each episode and cinematography is really top notch.

Been watching Imposters (only 2 seasons, but it’s been a fun ride) and just started The Servant on Apple+. It’s from M Night Shyamalan, and has some good twists to it so far. We’re still in the first season, but the second season has started with new episodes released once a week.

Homeland is complicated but I'm glad we mostly stuck with it (kinda lost interest in the last season....). But, it's one of the best examples I can think of where the show deals with it's overwhelming issue and pivots into something new and great.

Also, on S6 of Schitt's Creek and I don't want it to end. The S5 Cabaret finale was AMAZING. One of my favorite musicals too and Alexis is just smoking hot in her Kit Kat Klub regalia...and Stevie; wow, brought the house down.
