what is the most memorable golf course you ever played?

Most memorable was probably a tie between Winged Foot (West) and Merion (East). Loved asking the caddie at Winged Foot exactly where Phil bounced all his shots on 18 - he was happy to tell me. Played from the regular tees at Merion and shot a 99, which for me was pretty good. Playing Merion up close definitely showed me how tough a course can be set up without having to use extreme length. There were more than a few holes where you'd rather be in the bunker than the 2 ft high grass surrounding them........

Question on Pinehurst

Sprout, I played #2 also and enjoyed the round, but did not really find the course memorable except for the greens which were all upside down bowls and very challenging. My caddie helped me a bunch reading the greens or I would have 3 putted all day. Lots of pine trees and fairly open fairways. Your take?

Re: Wow, Pine Valley

Pine Valley a hard tee time? Had an Uncle who played there every year through some Govt. contact. Told him if he ever needed a 4th, anytime, anywhere I would be there in an hour. He said fine but honestly added, how many times do you think we could actually need a 4th for Pine Valley? I never got that call!

My most memorable because it is the primary "famous" course I've ever

played. But it did play much like you described. I remember I had an ex gunnery sergeant "Gunny" as my caddie. For the first 3 or 4 holes I wouldn't listen to him reading the green for me. After putting in the wrong direction it seemed every time, I finally gave in and he laughed like hell at me. But we had a great time and the hole always plays towards the water. I just didn't know where the water was...but he did.
My favorite course is the Williamsport Country Club and Buck Hills Falls.

Oakmont, ten days before the U S Open. Toughest course I have ever played. Kiawah Island is memorable too. Standing in the Palmer Room at Laurel Valley is pretty special too. Course is always in super shape.

Pine Valley.....................

Exceptional. Especially when you have high expectations of playing the often rated #1 course in the world. It exceeds expectations. I've been fortunate to also play a few other great tracks. Played top ten courses Merion, Oakmont, and Fisher's Island NY. Which are all amazing too. In Florida, Calusa Pines, McArthur and the Blue Monster (Doral) are all great. Kinloch in Virginia(top 100 course also). On Kiawah, The Ocean Course, River Course and Cassique. Teeth of the Dog is top 100 and one of the best Caribbean courses.

For the Philly crowd, Squires Club is also cool Men only. I asked an attendant if I could use my cell phone in the clubhouse. And he said there are no rules here. You can play in a tee shirt, and play is not limited to a foursome for example(can play with six players if you want.

Re: Pine Valley.....................

Never really started playing golf till the early 90's...but in the early 80's a buddy of mine met his best friend at Congressional and I tagged along...played with a set of used clubs. I remember my pal telling me to give him a 5 iron that he mistakenly put in my bag....I threw it across a fairway!!! Throwing clubs across a fairway at one of the most famous courses in the country! Of course I didn't know it at the time...

Then in the later 80's I interviewed for a job on a weekend in Boston...boss asked if I played golf...Sure!!...Borrowed a set of clubs from a friend and drove to the interview...met at some dogpatch named Brookline Country Club! It was about a month before the US Open was played...I don't think I broke a hundred, but I had an eagle on one of the par 5's! No I didn't get the job...the rough had to be a foot high, boss said they grow it outrageously high, then cut it down before the tournament....

St. Andrews and Carnoustie

St. Andrews because the history, as told by your caddie, keeps you spellbound. Carnoustie because we played in 30+ mph winds and it lived up to is nickname, Carnastie.

No order of preference:

Bethpage Black
Ballybunion, Ireland
Old Head, Ireland
Kapulua, Hawaii
Montauk Downs, Long Island
Waterville, Ireland

Ever play Tralee in a driving rainstorm in 1998? Always wondered if it was you I played the front nine with.

Re: Cairo / Giza Egypt. The Course near the base of the Great Pyramids.

I have played there as well. Is it still nine fairways?

One of the nicest, toughest is Jack's course- Scioto CC. Awesome Donald Ross track.....

Although, the most memorable round was playing Valhalla. Going into 9 I was even par, and then the rain, the rain, the rain- never finished the round but I was finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Maidstone Club, East Hampton, N.Y. Not as long as the venues over in South Hampton but as someone mentioned earlier, the greens are like turned over bowls and very fast. It is about the only course I've played where being a little short with your putting was preferred over being long and rolling off the other side.

Leftcoastdoug:

Actually, I played Tralee in 1998, and yes it was pouring rain. Not uncommon at Tralee. An absolute guess would be that it was May.

I remember you giving Marsh Creek some advice many years ago on Ireland.

I was there in 1998 just after labor day. I ran into a Penn Stater at Tralee and we played together for 9 holes. He was with an Army mate who didn't have rain gear as I recall and was soaked to the core. It was howling. I didn't see them on the tenth tee and continued. It actually was a much better weather wise with sunshine on the last 3 holes.

I recognized him as a Penn Stater due to the Toftrees bagtag he had.

Proud Lion Galen Hall is a great little course, some of the neatest par 3"s I have ever played.Green Hills is another fun course in Berks county.

Fishers Island is my choice amzing experience the moment you get on the ferry.Maidstone would be a close second.

Proud lion , Galen Hall is a great little course, Some of the neatest par 3"s I have ever played. Green Hills is another hidden Gem in Berks.

Fishers Island would be my choice ,amazing experience the moment you board the ferry . Maidstone and Shinnecock Hills would be close second. The holes in the quarry at Black Diamond Ranch are stunning.

Played HS home matches at Galen Hall, a beautiful mountain type course similar to western Pa courses. My favorites played were Oakmont, Pebble Beach and Troon North and got to walk the Boulders which is a surreal locale north of Phoenix. Mystic Rock in October is a treat.
