I agree with you however, could this year be different now that NLWC has a rokfin channel. Could NLWC and PSU wrestling use this as an opportunity to perform a fundraiser....obviously i would agree with you and lean towards this not happening however now that NLWC could make some money maybe Cael will think differently possiblyWe’ll likely never know. Haven’t been open to outside eyes in a long time.
You can always dream, but from some of Cenzo’s answers on the topic in his frequent recent appearances on the Baschamania podcast, I’m not so sure the idea has legs, or if it does, Cael is ruthlessly ankle picking them.I agree with you however, could this year be different now that NLWC has a rokfin channel. I like the idea but each of the NLWC events have been just over a month apart ($$$). A wrestle-off would then have to be at least January 23 and by that point the season is started.
This discussion does bring up an interesting point though, PSU coaches have never been a fan of wrestle-offs. They won't have tournaments this year with common opponents. I can't imagine they just say Howard gets the spot over Meredith at 125 if that ends up being the case. Plus I am sure even the lesser known backups want a chance at the starting spot. Just thinking that there has to be something behind the scenes for all guys but specifically in the 141-157 range you have Nick Lee, Beau Bartlett, Jarod Verkleeren, Adam Busiello, Terrell Barraclough, Brady Berge, Luke Gardner, Bo Pipher, and Matt Lee for three spots. I can't imagine any of them got to the level they are at by just conceding that somebody is perceived to be better than another.
I don’t know, it has been 21 months since PSU has won a National Championship,The coaches see the wrestlers every day in practice and that includes live goes. Not sure why at this late date you or ANYONE for that matter doesn't trust our coaches to choose the best wrestler at each weight to be the starter or that the process in unfair to the lesser known backups as you imply.
Yes, but it’s been almost 5 years since anyone other than PSU has been reigning National Champions 😃👍I don’t know, it has been 21 months since PSU has won a National Championship,
Cael tends to believe in letting his winning do the selling for him--if he thinks keeping who wins in the room close to the chest helps him win, I guess I'll let his record speak for itself.Didn't know penn state did it this way. Shocked they aren't trying to get every dollar they can out of this.
Penn State University has weird, conflicting attitudes not just about commercialization -- but about the mere appearance of commercialization.Didn't know penn state did it this way. Shocked they aren't trying to get every dollar they can out of this.
Well put! I graduated in late 60’s, played Lacrosse, had wrestling roommate (not a starter), and a sister who played and coached two sports at PSU. I’ve always loved the place and consider it a 2nd home. Season ticket holder for football since 72’ and have had season tickets for several other sports since I retired in 05’. Over the past 10 years I feel as if PSU admin has heavily discounted loyalty. The business is so damn big that there are financial concerns far beyond keeping long termPenn State University has weird, conflicting attitudes not just about commercialization -- but about the mere appearance of commercialization.
Strong demand is not a sufficient case in that discussion.
PSU often would rather do nothing at all than to sell something inexpensive to people who want it.
Despite the fact that PSU will brazenly push expensive things to anybody and everybody. (And not refund seat licenses for fans locked out of the stadium.)
Not much this university does makes sense. Some things are done well in spite of themselves.Penn State University has weird, conflicting attitudes not just about commercialization -- but about the mere appearance of commercialization.
