Where we stand with Recruits 2017/2018 10/22/16

When he signed with PSU on LOI Day...

Thrift started his collegiate career at Temple before transferring to Lackawanna.

Thrift will have three years of eligibility at Penn State, which is different than most JUCO players who typically only have two years of eligibility.
I know he has 3 years but was wondering if he was allowed a redshirt year. He hasn't played has he?

I know he has 3 years but was wondering if he was allowed a redshirt year. He hasn't played has he?

Brenon Thrift has a maximum of 3 years at PSU, which will finish his total college eligibility. He can sit out or play this year, at the coaches' discretion. Either way it uses one of his remaining 3 years, leaving him with a maximum 2 more years, 2017 and 2018. Or, if he graduates, he may or may not complete his final year of eligibility, like some other players.

It appears that this year, they want Brenon to gain good weight, gain strength and learn the system.

2015: Thrift helped Lackawanna CC to the Northeast Football Conference Championship with a 8-2 record

2014: Thrift was a Redshirt at Temple.

2020 recruit: RB Blake Corum, Laurel MD. Toledo offered him in 8th grade. I guess we should remeber the name. He was present this weekend as well as earlier this year. Holy lightning! He is smallish at 5' 9, 180 but has years to grow. His freshman yr. higlights are on Hudl. Think Ray Rice with homerun speed.
That size in 8th grade might mean 6 ', 200 by senior gear.

This staff doesn't have ingrates on it's roster: It recruits quality kids. That's one of the best things about this staff. Trace is our man. If Trace gets hurt, Tommy is our man. They are BOTH good men to lead this team and they are BOTH winners.

You are mistaken in how you are viewing it.

Assuming Clifford signs, next year we will have 4 highly regarded QBs. Of those, Stevens was rated the lowest coming in. But in the limited views we've had, he may be the most improved of the current 3, and might be the best of the 4. Even if he isn't, how can we expect to keep all of these kids as backups when they could start for most other Division 1 teams? Each is separated by only 1 year. If there are no injuries, Trace gets 3 full years and the others get 1 year apiece.

You are viewing the issue without regard for how each QB has a self-interest. Don't see how I am "mistaken."

Thanks s is an issue that all teams that recruit top classes year in and year out face. Alabama manages it, OSU manages it, etc.

If we become a program where the best of the best come to go to school and play for the Lions, because they know it will make them better prepare for life and the NFL then it is worth them coming and sit for a couple of years before playing.

There will always be kids that transfer we the best we can for us the ines will stay will be the ones that we win with.

Just because someone on a message board says they could start for most other Division 1 teams doesn't make it so. Most top 20 teams have a roster of QB's that collectively were higher rated coming out of high school that the PSU roster you project, and some carry more than 4 scholarship QB's. And many of those higher rated QB's won't pan out as starting QB for those team, and some of ours won't either..... I don't believe we will know how good Stevens is or will be until he actually gets significant game experience. Time will tell if he sees the field this year or next, or if he gets passed up in practice by one of the younger QB's this Spring or next year......

Jaylen brought his mother to Happy Valley.

Looks like Mom was happy. Jaylen said that Penn State set the bar for his Official visits.
Relationships will be important for Harris and his visit with his Mother was very good.
Spent a lot of time with Coaches Franklin, Smith and Gattis.
He said the visit definitely boosted Penn State on his list.

Wasn't Boldon, Jones, Newsome, and McGloin battling it out a few years ago. And the big stars Boldon, Jones and Newsome flamed out while the walk-on McGloin is now in the NFL. Before that, Devlin transferred because he couldn't beat out the lower rated Clark. It is all about creating competition.

Top247 WR Harris says Penn State visit was best one yet

Oct 24, 10:23 AM

One of the nation's top WRs feels big things are about to happen in Happy Valley.

"Aw man the atmosphere was crazy!" Harris said. "The stadium gets very, very loud! And I mean Penn State came out too play. Both schools are in my top five and I know what both teams are capable of doing so this win was a big one!"
Top247 receiver Jaylen Harris was on his official visit.

This is D1 football. Kids have to compete in practice and scrimmages for their position. The coaches will play the guy who performs best. I think Franklin has proven that by playing some young guys over older guys. Plus, we really don't know how close the competition at any position was.

I don't want to take anything away from McSorely. He has played well given our OL issues, and continues to get better, particularly in his line reads. But he does have physical limitations relative to the others. He did not beat out Stevens in practice. No one was "passed up."

According to Franklin, McSorely was selected based on his experience and leadership. Franklin picked one over the other when they were statistically even in practice without giving both a chance in real games. Franklin looked at passing statistics in practice. But how did he assess running ability -- a key part of this system -- without any real hitting? Going forward, McSorely's experience will continue to increase over the other prospects if they don't play. Makes it tough to compete as a backup if the key selection criteria is experience/leadership. Why not potential if performance is currently close?

Also, I was incorrect on their relative rankings as recruits. Stevens was ranked slightly higher than McSorely though both were 3-stars. The guys coming in (Zembiec and Clifford) are 4-stars. Clifford is young enough to have the keys passed to him by McSorely and still get a few years to start, but then what of Stevens and Zembiec?

Just seems like too much talent will be wasted on the sidelines, or transfer, when each could bring a new dimension to a game -- maybe a new package of situational plays that force defenses into more preparation.

Post Visit I would bump him and Davis up to Very Good Chance with the idea that we get one of them. Probably the first to decide.

I think a 9 win season lands Wade, particularly if Pitt stumbles. He knows the future at Pitt is not all that bright in the near term.

So far, Pitt's only bright spot IMO is their win over us.
On any given day, any team can beat another; justify that they were the better team that day.
It would be asinine to think otherwise.
After all, we certainly proved we were better than OSU last Saturday.

I think we will land Wade.

If Pitt does stumble, would anybody really notice??

Stop it with the stars, please. Once they get to PSU those ratings have zero meaning.

Dude, you need to stop the star gazing. They mean nothing once a kid get on campus. TM has only been on campus one semester longer than TS (who early enrolled). So seniority had nothing to do with it (especially since they were both learning a new offense). The coaches let the kids compete and went with who they thought gave them the best chance of winning. Plus, we really have no idea how close the competition actually was. What good would it do for Franklin to tell the public one kid clearly out played the other? And I really don't get the TM physical limitation stuff. I think you are confusing his height and star ranking for ability. If he were 6'3", he probably would have been a 4 star national recruit. If that were the case, however, he might not be at Penn State (and Penn State might not be 5-2 right now and coming off one of the biggest wins in program history).

Be happy with where the program is right now given the sanctions and trust that the coach's whose livelihoods depend on performance are making decisions that they believe are best for the team.

We also need to stop it with the physical limitations crap. TMac just beat a team with NFL caliber players at every single position on defense. He also was more productive than either Robinson or Clark in their respective wins against Ohio State.

Measurables are only important when trying to project somebody's performance (i.e. potential). However when somebody has a proven record that they can compete and win against the highest level of competition the measurables no longer matter.

No picks, or pick 6's. We've seen many, many of those from PSU QBs with better measurables against Ohio State.

I really have trouble seeing 21 but who knows. Sorrell was a surprise. I remember when Barnes left early and didn't get drafted. Will Godwin & Gesicki leave? Is it possible that a guy like Thrift was only promised 1 year?
Barnes didn't get drafted but he did make the Jets as a free agent.

No picks ... TM didn't fumble either. Took care of the ball. Wisely threw some away. Didn't take big losses. Well done.

If you consider being on the practice squad, "making it," then yes. He was released by the Jets this past August and is now on the Chiefs practice squad.

I have a friend that made the practice squad the year the giants won the super bowl. The practice squad players got paid $5,200 per week for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $420,000.

Well as you know the Giants won the super bowl and if I remember correctly they were a wild card team. So they had that first game, then the Divisional, then Conference, and Super Bowl checks. He ended up making more the 4 -5 weeks of the playoffs then he did during the season. He made close to or over 1000k for the playoffs because practice squad players get a full share like the active players.

Anyone know what happened with Elijah Conliffe? Seems like Penn State had a shot a while back but he now appears to have dropped off the radar. He's still uncommitted.

Happens at most good programs. Kids know it going in. Look at Wimbush. And sometimes someone will transfer. Still best to take a good QB in every class, IMHO.

I know a guy in a similar situation but he played for the Steelers when they won the Super Bowl a few years back. He's was a lineman here in Harrisburg somewhere and then ended up playing at West Virginia. He made a pretty good chunk of change like you said on the practice squad and now he's a corrections officer at a county jail here in Harrisburg. I have to say though he's on the laziest people I've ever met and he lives off his stories of playing in the NFL.

I think just Bama happened...

Most of what you said here you made up.

I don't want to take anything away from McSorely. He has played well given our OL issues, and continues to get better, particularly in his line reads. But he does have physical limitations relative to the others. No one outside of the coaching staff has seen enough of the two of them to make this judgement.

He did not beat out Stevens in practice.
Yes he did, or he would not be playing, unless you believe there is some sort of conspiracy and that the coaches would not play the players that give them the best chance to win....

No one was "passed up."
No idea what this is supposed to mean, but McSorely and Stevens had a competition for the starting QB position that began when Stevens enrolled (knowing that Hack was likely gone after the 2015 season, lasted through last Spring's practices and into the Fall practices. Franklin purposely let the competition go on to give Stevens the fairest chance possible to win the job, given Steven's youth. Both were learning the new offense from scratch as well.

According to Franklin, McSorely was selected based on his experience and leadership. He picked the QB that he believed gave the team the best chance to win. That's the definition of winning the QB competition from the QB's perspective as well.

Franklin picked one over the other when they were statistically even in practice without giving both a chance in real games.
Franklin did not release practice statistics so this statement is B.S. All he said is that the competition was close, and we don't really know if it was or if he was just giving Stevens every opportunity to turn the corner and win the job. But Stevens did not win the job.

Franklin looked at passing statistics in practice. But how did he assess running ability -- a key part of this system -- without any real hitting?
You know what CJF assessed? No you don't. He, James Franklin, chose the QB that gave the team the best chance to win. Passing ability, running ability, leadership,.................

Going forward, McSorely's experience will continue to increase over the other prospects if they don't play.
Obviously. Someone gets to play and the backup "backs up".

Makes it tough to compete as a backup if the key selection criteria is experience/leadership.

You don't know what the selection criteria is, other than CJF chose the QB that gave the team the best chance to win.

Why not potential if performance is currently close?
You also don't know what either QB's potential is. And you don't know if their performance in practice was or is currently close. CJF says he tapes and charts each snap of practice, examining each one repeatedly, so he would know who "wins" the competition with regards to knowing the offense (not making mistakes), passing accuracy, arm strength, ..... Comments on that by those that are not part of the process are meaningless.

Also, I was incorrect on their relative rankings as recruits. Stevens was ranked slightly higher than McSorely though both were 3-stars.
Who cares? High School rankings are for recruiting sites and fans. CJF didn't care when HE evaluated the kids in high school and he doesn't care now.

The guys coming in (Zembiec and Clifford) are 4-stars. Clifford is young enough to have the keys passed to him by McSorely and still get a few years to start, but then what of Stevens and Zembiec? Again, who cares? High School rankings are for recruiting sites and fans. CJF didn't care when HE evaluated the kids in high school and he doesn't care now. Each year brings change. Sometimes talented underclassmen beat out former starters. We don't know the future. Sometimes a minor injury gives a backup the chance to play and the backup plays so well he becomes the starter even when the former starter gets healthy. Time will tell....

Just seems like too much talent will be wasted on the sidelines, or transfer, when each could bring a new dimension to a game -- maybe a new package of situational plays that force defenses into more preparation. CJF is playing to win now. You don't seem to put much faith in CJF's ability to run the team and put the players on the field that give PSU the best chance to win. Sad.

Just seems like too much talent will be wasted on the sidelines, or transfer, when each could bring a new dimension to a game -- maybe a new package of situational plays that force defenses into more preparation.
What a load of nonsense. Maybe you could get a job on Wally Breen's and 21 Gums's staff.
