I was there with a Penn State buddy from Chicago and 2 of his friends, a husband and wife who were ILL alums. We had good seats downstairs around the 40, but back under the upper deck overhang, so that you never could track punts, kickoffs, or long passes. After a debacle of a first quarter, when KiJana lost a fumble, and Collins threw a pick (and should have thrown 2 or 3 more...) we were down 21-0 to a stud defense led by Simeon Rice, Kevin Hardy, John Holecek, and eventual Butkus winner Dana Howard, all future NFL'ers. We gradually chipped away, as Collins totally settled down, to set up the mother of all marvelous drives, THE DRIVE. The Illinois couple barely said a word the entire drive back to Kenilworth. As I recall, the team's hotel was near a frat house or some sh^t and there were fire alarms in the middle of the night, and the hotel power magically went out, so the team's pregame meal was all cold food, like pizza. Likely the hotel crap played a part in the horrific first quarter, that, and we hadn't seen a defense that good all season. I remember the gloom that rolled in late in the game, along with the pressure packed The Drive, gave a mystical feel to the 4th quarter. I've been at many big games with exciting endings since 1973, and The Drive 's late game theatrics ranks up there at the top with 1982 Nebraska Blackledge to Bowman, 1979 Sugar Bowl goal line debacle, 1987 Gifto picks Vinny in Fiesta, 1989 vs Alabama when Blair Thomas carried about 10 straight times for about 60 yards, only to see the game ending and winning 17 yard Tarasi FG blocked, ARob circus catch 2013 vs scUM (4 OTs), Tamba decleating Heisman Troy Smith for The Fumble 2005, and finally 2 of the coldest games we ever played: 1987, stopping Tony Rice/Lou Holtz and ND on a 2 point conversion to win 21-20 (another great Blair Thomas game...over 200 yards), and 1977 when Millen stopped Pitt's game tying 2 point conversion to win 15-13 at Pitt. Fun times...
