we are looking at the 4th class in a row that has had DT recruiting problems. what is the root cause of this? we seem to be able to recruit at almost every other position. DE seems to be recruit rich for us - and now we are trying to suggest that several of them will grow into being the next Austin Johnson.

Almost everybody in college football has difficulty recruiting DTs. Penn State has been lucky to have amazing coaches and an amazing run of players. We've been spoiled the last 15 years. Nobody in the B1G other than maybe Ohio State has had the kind of players at DT that PSU has had.

Big guys with tremendous strength who can move are really really hard to find. OTs are similarly rare. And the attrition rate is high.

PSU was able to recruit so many great prospects at DT because of Larry Johnson and Paterno -- these guys knew they could come to PSU and come out a 1st round pick. But now PSU has got to really compete for these guys and it's hard because everybody wants them.

I just chalk it up to bad luck. it doesn't make sense that there is a logical reason that we can successfully recruit other positions, but not DT. Even if we keep Dwumfour and Jordan, it would be nice to have at least 1 more guy there.

I think part of it is that we are shooting for the top shelf D tackles initially and then offering plan B kids, as opposed to casting a wider net up front. Of course this doesn't explain why we are getting more top shelf DE, skill player, and now OL recruits but not as many D tackles.

Because this new generation of kids has zero aspirations of playing in the NFL. That's the only excuse.

Last I checked....Good DT + Penn State = NFL.

I know some of these kids aren't great at math, but I've laid it out fairly simply for them.

You're welcome.

Why? Well, targeted aggression by our competitors on our weak spots, doesn't help. It is a nasty, high salary, big bucks war being fought, more out in the open, than ever before.

Sometimes it's a lack of talent in your recruiting area over a period of years. We have the same situation at LB. I really think over time Franklin will correct that.

It's Bill O'Brien's fault. Ask Franklin_Restores_Tradition, or whatever the hell his name is now.

You must have your tongue in your cheek, please tell me you're not serious!
About it being O'Brien's fault, or about that moron making it his fault? The former, I am kidding, the latter, I wouldn't be surprise by it.

name say 30 DT's we've had over the years that were say, AA or 1st round draft picks, or became all Pro's?? (tic of course)

I blame Jay!

You guys are slipping! How has he not been blamed already!

How many school have had 30 All American DTs?

J. Hill, E. Johnson, J. Kennedy, J. Odrick, D. Still, and A. Johnson will likely be playing DT in the NFL this fall. I'd say that's pretty good.

I don't think O'Brien focused on DTs because he had limited scholarships and he focused on kids that could help right away. I think Franklin has just struggled to land his top targets. Shoop's departure probably doesn't help. It's a problem because anybody we get in 2017 probably won't be a major contributor until 2018 or 2019.
