Why is our run game so much worse this year?

Our running game has been anemic for a long time despite recruiting some superstars that are now in the NFL. Barkley could break a few but remember how many times he got stopped behind the line of scrimmage. It has been so frustrating to watch.

Our ground game has been characterized by deep, slow developing handoffs -- an attempt to disguise a potential passing play. The OL lines up on their heels and gets no push. It's a pass-blocking stance.

One thing I've noticed that some other teams do, that we do not do, is to move the mesh point laterally, and keep it closer to the line of scrimmage.

OL recruiting and (I suspect) coaching have been problematic. There is no reason that a team at this level should have the same problem year in and year out. The one constant has been the HC.

That said, when was the last time we really had a prolific passing game? That's one of the keys to keeping defenses honest. This year we have a great passer but you can tell that the receivers are not great and very often are not on the same page. Liam Clifford seems reliable but why does he not get the ball thrown his way more often? TV doesn't show the problems with our receiving group.

Before today the defenses were basically playing 9 in the box at times. But today I've seen 6 NW players on the outside at times in front of the 4 wide receivers and PSU still didn't run well on those plays.

Team needs to get fired up at half time. Dancing girls, whatever works. Hopefully Franklin knows........

Couple things I see. The read is useless and has basically been abandoned b/c Drew isn’t a runner. Sean ran well and kept the D honest on the read.

Strange was a great blocker in the trap game. We’ve basically abandoned the trap game.

We obviously miss Juice.

Nobody respects our pass. Even when the D doesn’t have #s in the box, they’re still playing downhill. The passing game is so discombobulated… WRs and Drew never seem to be on teh same page. Drew never gives WRs a chance to win 1:1. He plays super super safe.

I’m not saying it’s our best hope of winning a Natty, but Pribula and Potts would probably kill it today. Getting numbers in the run game would give NW big problems.

And there it is. The QB run threat is a dimension we’ve really missed all year.

The right side of the OL is not B1G caliber...hasn't been for yrs. They get zero push and it's an annual problem.

Wallace is absolutely horrible. I thought Shelton would beat him out, but I guess not. Wallace was a "top OG" coming out of Hun School in Princeton, but PSU put him at OT. The DE of NW was beating him time and again off the LOS.

PSU rushed for 134 yds today. NW has been giving up 185 yds/gm.

There was an expectation that this was going to be one of PSU's best OLs in a while but it seems apparent that's not the case. Some of that might be because our WRs aren't a deep threat.

Spot on post.

And, I think this OL really misses Tengwall. He was a great blocker and could pull in the run game; he was big and athletic.

The running game actually has me greatly worried . Singleton does not look right to me. I think it is more him than the OL. He is not seeing the whole field or breaking tackles. This is a much better OL than the one Barkley and Sanders ran behind.

And those 2 guys had shake and wiggle...so many yds after contact. Nick doesn't and lacks balance. Also appears too heavy.

Not an excuse any more. Iowa was not in that lineup and neither was NW which means respect for OL is waning. Same old same old… just no push. That third quarter 4 plays inside the 3 said it all.

Agree. Anyone who saw him last year would think he's either injured or out of shape.

Since the gaping holes are not there we need the threat that Potts brings. It's almost as if his small size is a benefit in tight space. Then when he gets some room he demonstrates quickness.

I would be surprised if the listed weights on our roster are accurate for these players.

Those 2 guys were seeing defenders in the background almost every play and still making something out of nothing. Barkley would average at least 1 more yard per carry with this OL. Singleton is being dropped or cut short by one defender at 2 - 4 yards down the field.

No offense but you honestly think Nick is too heavy?
I believe he added weight from last yr...didn't JF mention that? He just looks slower to me as well. Do u really lose speed if u aren't hurt? Idk

Good point...Potts has that tight fit ability to squeeze out yds and hits the hole. Shows how important the portal can be.

I don’t know if they are still employing a simplistic. running game plan but the one thing I noticed is the OL is not getting to the second level of the defense.

I'm not a blocking specialist, but on most plays I don't see how they can get to "the second level" from that stance. There would have to be a gap or a massive size difference when the OL is posed to pass-block while the DL is posed to rush.

I never understood that change from the pro offense to the RPO offense. I get the downfield blocking limitation and the need to disguise the play, but to expect a traditional "push" and high rushing stats from that would seem a stretch. The whole thing is designed to keep the linebackers from dropping back. You have to be a dominant passing team, and demonstrate it.
