Why "Social Media" is great....

Just listened to Justin Basch’s interview with Josh Barr. The disconnect between what actually draws great recruits to this program (pretty much, everything - culture, partners, support, etc, etc) vs what a lot of Iowa fans think draws the recruits (money -only money) will result in Iowa continuing to be 1 step behind Penn State (and Ok State most likely). Josh Barr (and others) have made it abundantly clear that money is not their main driver - in fact, it’s way down the list.

Now I’m not naive - money doesn’t “talk”, it screams, but I’ve turned down numerous better “deals” based on more money due to other things being a higher priority - mainly family suppprt, location, stability, etc. what good is chasing more money in a new town if you end up working for a sociopath or a company on shaky footing? Yes, these recruits are just kids but if you have a supportive family with life experience, the choices they make will go far beyond the quick buck.

Also, it's not like Cael is asking these kids to pay their way to wrestle for PSU. I know Iowa fans like to make sarcastic comments about our wrestlers getting a 10% scholarship (while trying to imply they're all millionaires) Cael has always been for his wrestlers getting rewarded for their efforts. It's pretty well known even before NIL that he wanted to get every kid on his roster some kind of scholarship money at least.

We hired Clay Steadman for a reason, the majority of our wrestlers signed deals with HVU (even nonstarters) in addition to other brands. Some will do more than others, that's up to them. But money cannot be the #1 motivator nor should it be for coming to PSU.

Exactly. For example, you see so many short sighted professional athletes take a better $$$ deal (though both deals will set them up for life), but the bigger money deal is on a team going nowhere, with a better chance of you getting injured or underperforming (e.g. bad Oline for a QB or RB), and torpedoing your chances of future immortality.

In contradistinction, Saquon is on a below market deal, but his Q Rating is skyrocketing because he’s got everything he needs to truly leverage his talents. But yeah, he could be making 3 mil more playing for a dogshit team like the Bears.

The Iowa clowns are fools. Back when Compliance Vodka was babbling his shit i was on HR telling them they are ridiculous. PSU kids were simply doing what Gable and JRob did for Iowa wrestlers and wrestling back in the 70s and 80s, namely camps. I thanked them for supporting the cause, Nolf, Zain and Joesph had just spent 2 weeks in Iowa doing about half a dozen camps each. They just screamed at me about "no, no, no!!!!!"
There is alot of Gable's forward thinking in Cael. Cael just looks at stuff that has worked and then takes it to another level.

Are those dudes a thing? It's hard to keep up with social media. They could either just be Jason's buds or they might just have a thing going there. Definitely dry humor, but I enjoyed it! Some of those questions had Jason in a Russian tie. I was waiting for 'why did you quit' but it never came ?

It's making fun of an existing show by Caleb Pressley. The guy pretending to be Caleb is John Broughton. https://uwwsports.com/sports/wrestling/roster/john-broughton/14536

He does photography/video for PSU and the a lot of the crew like Bo, Jason, etc.

The main questioner is John Broughton: Nolf’s business partner in Ocean, I think also Scraplife. He’s also been creating the really nice, slick video content for NLWC lately.

Posting this in case anyone is interested, but mostly for the humor in the itinerary: you start Day 1 by barfing at high altitude before breakfast, and end the day by flying to Columbus.

(There is a day in State College, so it's not all like that.)

Can we just sit around and talk, rather than work out and train with them? I don't think my back, knees, neck, hips, arms, body can take all that.

Funny how the Iowa tune has changed. Just a short few years ago, we were buying everyone with our massive war chest.

What’s our top 10 NCAA tournament backup team?

McHenry
Nasdeo
Weiss?
Evans
Facundo
Sealey
MLee
Ryder
Cochran/Mirasola
Cochran/Mirasola

It makes for a good sound bite, but there’s no top 10 team there. Maybe 5 NQs and an outside shot at 3-5 lower placing AAs.
I think you're underestimating the number of NQs.
McHenry
Evans
Facundo
Ryder
Cochran
Mirasola - the heavier one has already beaten a top 20 kid

Matt Lee has a punchers chance - has beaten many NQs in his career, but occasionally takes a bad loss
Sealey - haven't seen what he can do yet.

With a season of starting under their belt, that team could qualify 8. Qualifying 8 and 3-5 AAs is probably a top 10 team.

56 points placed 10th last year. Five guys placing 6th with two bonus points each is about 55 points.

I don’t see it.

The Facebook group 'Penn State Wrestling Room' will now be posting weekly a compilation of the rankings from the seven ranking groups. This will be called Master Rankings. The weekly top 20 in each weight class are assigned a numerical value. If an individual is ranked number one they get 20 points, number two 19 points, all the way down to the 20th ranked individual. So there would be a total of 140 possible points. It will make the rankings more understandable similar to how RealClearPolitics ranks all the political polls
They also plan to use that ranking to rank the teams

Who are the seven?

I am aware of Intermat, Wrestlestat, Flo, WIN, and The Open Mat.

Go to the Penn State wrestling room on Facebook and check out the master rankings. All 10 weight classes are ranked. The seven ranking services were taken and points assigned to get the master ranking. This is similar to what is done in real clear politics. Also based on this master ranking in updated projection for the scoring at the NCAA tournament has been done. It is very interesting and gives a better look, a more honest look at the rankings.

Thanks, but I'm not on FB.

How do you handle slots 21 thru 33 when doing tournament scoring?

Anyone know an admin there? I was declined twice despite answering their pretty simple questions

For those interested, here are the Penn State Wrestling Room Master Rankings. Composite rankings of anything are always helpful, IMO. Of course LL, our only man currently outside the top 10 is almost certain to keep rising.

25 L Lilledahl 11
33 B Davis 7
41 B Bartlett 3
49 S Van Ness 2
57 T Kasak 2
65 M Mesenbrink 1
74 L Haines 2
84 C Starocci 1
97 J Barr 4
HW G Kerkvliet 2

So two first seeds, 4 seconds and one each third, fourth, seventh and 11th? I like our chances! :)

Those Master rankings will be composed and updated each week. The info from the seven main ranking groups will be used. Only the top 20 will be ranked. Point values will be assigned as follows: 20 points for any number one ranking, 19 points for any number two ranking, 18 points for any number three ranking, etc. those wrestlers that don't receive a ranking in the top 20 of an individual ranking group will receive 0 points. Maximum number of points would be 140.

Hey, who’s the goofy chick that’s always hanging around the good young wrestlers and allegedly helping them finance trips and shit? I’m at soldier salute and my old coaches had never heard of this.
