WIN Magazine ranks Iowa preseason #1

How I would react if Iowa dethroned Penn State at nationals. I have already said if the bet is Iowa or the field, I am taking the field. If Iowa beats the field and wins the 2019-20 NCAA wrestling team championship I have already pledged to donate $250 in Tom Brands' name to Wrestling for Life. As far as the dual in Carver, a perfect Hawk night could lead to 1 or 2 point Hawkeye win. Part of a perfect night would require a PSU underperformance.

A perfect night for the other guys coupled with an off night from the Lions makes the Lions susceptible when competing against the Buckeyes or Cowboys as well as the Hawks, so it isn't like the Hawks are something special. The Hawks are as good as any other recent Hawk teams. The question this season answers is are this year's Lions, Buckeyes or Cowboys as good as recent Lion, Buckeyes or Cowboys teams. If the answer to that question is a collective "no", then there is an opening for a good Hawk team.

While I may not agree with some of this(Hawks needing a perfect performance), it is a reasonable outlook and I can accept that. Thank you for giving an honest answer without the extra shots.

Being as certain of the Hawkeyes' good fortune as you appear, care to pledge $250 in Cael's name to Wrestling for Life if the field proves superior to the Hawks?

Actually, I posted in another thread that I think the Hawks will not beat PSU at Nationals. While I think that they will win the dual, I am absolutely not confident in that. Too many close matchups in my eyes for either team's fans to be comfortable in predicting a win.

All that aside, I don't bet on sporting events. In my experiences, it took away from the enjoyment of the events as I was too concerned about the $...

I think hes the dude who predicted iowa would only be able to win 1 match against psu last year lmao

I agree with Nitlion6 on it not being far fetched as long as it was a preseason prediction.
Many believed that Joseph was responsible for the loss against the bull the previous year. Couple that with the post season results and picking Joseph again was logical.
Desanto and RBY had a bunch of unanswered questions. Would Austin acclimate well in the Hawkeye room? Would RBY live up to the hype?
Berge's accolades suggested AA threat as a freshman and most put him on the same level as Lugo.
Nothing there that would make me surprised or find laughable that a PSU fan would predict only 1 win.

You think? You give me credit, but you don't know. Thata boy. Wow everyone with your logic and reasoning skills.
As far as picking Iowa to win a single match last year certainly would not have been far fetched. Of course, with Tommy's refusal to bring his team to State College knowing if Penn State would have won 9 of 10 or if Iowa scrapes together a strong 3 of 10 performance is just an exercise in guesswork.

Speak poorly of Iowa? Using HR as a baseline, I do not accuse the Brands boys of being blatant cheaters, or morally bankrupt pieces of scum. I do not single out specific wrestlers and make fun of them for failing to achieve. I mean, yeah I get it. I refuse to buy in to the annual this is the Hawks' year silliness and I endlessly make fun of the collective silliness and bizarre persona that is HR, and I make fun of the Iowa technique of push, push and scream stall, but honest to God dude I do not tell any of you guys to just go back to HR, I don't use some sort of intellectually empty put down of Iowa wrestling fans are not aware that wrestling existed prior to the mid 1970s. I understand why your panties are in a bunch though. Typically HR fans seem to believe Iowa Hawk wrestling is always the favorite and if Penn State would just stop cheating the Hawks would allowed to be recognized as the really, truly best and I keep reminding you that your fantasy is nothing but, well you know - a fantasy.
Im certain it was you that posted that the hawks would only win 1 match, i just didnt feel like diving 5 pages back to find the post.

And he was wrong. Iowa didn't win ANY matches in a dual against PSU last year because Brands would not schedule the dual. That is not trash talk, just a fact.
If they had a duel last year iowa would have won 125, 133, toss up at 149 165, and maybe 184 depending on if rasheed showed up. Of course it is just speculation, but thats how anyone that isnt nitlion would probably see it.

I love the "if rasheed showed up" crap. If you want to do that over on HR, go for it. But don't bring it over here without expecting some push back.

He was injured last year. He sat some duals and then forfeited out of the B1G finals.

This from the group of fans that had a borderline conniption if someone accused Spencer Lee of ducking when he missed duals or didn't immediately cite his mystery illness when discussing any losses he took.

Good God dude. Your feelings are hurt and you are actively crying on a message board. Stop it. Its OK. Here let me help you. Iowa is a really, really good wrestling program. They currently, seemingly have the superior state of Iowa program and they have been a solid third best program out of 14 in the Big10. Things are OK. Grab some tissues, wipe those tears and calm down. Geez.

I meant nothing negative by it, im just saying he wasnt around for a good portion of the duel season guy.

God damn i literally pulled back on my last comment about talking about how butthurt you sounded lmao. I enjoy wrestling, and the competition from both teams. But its evident on both boards that if given the opportunity i bet you would spread your cheeks wide open for cael and co. Whole nother level of superfan in nitlion6 lol

We could've seen if Shakur showed up if Tommy would've showed up. Maybe Lee would've showed up. I wonder if Warner would've showed up.Maybe still suffering from jet-lag. Was he still Warnerov or just Warner and what way would Bo have folded him for the 1st period pin? Would Stoll have pushed Tommy out of the way to get at Cassar? Tom said he'd go intergalactic for competition. He couldn't stop by Penn St on the way?

No calming down then? Oh well. You keep on being strong and here's hoping you feel better. Give me a shout out when the realization hits you that you are just in one of those Groundhog day loops and you are getting set to tell us all "just you guys wait until next year!"

. . . Too many close matchups in my eyes for either team's fans to be comfortable in predicting a win . . .

^^ This.

It's September. There are still questions about lineups. And a single significant injury between now and late January could completely change the outlook.

Bravado at this point is time is a gamble.

You are too polite. None of the Top 4 or 5 teams are taking 9 out of 10 against one another in today's world of NCAA wrestling. It doesn't matter how it looks on paper and how one might concoct a best-case scenario . . . no one ever achieves best-case, and none of the upper tier teams lose 9 matches in a dual. A 7-3 bet is within reason, 8-2 should raise an eyebrow, and 9-1 is just ridiculous.

[Note: 10-0 is Spkyer territory, in case anyone is wondering.]

This makes sense to me. Why wouldn't someone expect each top school to have high hopes for the year? These are the guys we watch, talk about, and know by far the most about, therefore expect a lot and hope a lot for them.

If Philly sports fans can expect good things each year, far more that top teams like Iowa or PSU would expect good things. I see two main types of fans in Philly, the perpetual optimists, and the "realists" (to be nice). I am the latter. Sure, the Birds won one, but I can't erase the last 50 years of history. If I get optimistic, I see a Flyers or Sixers hat.....and I'm right back to my normal attitude. :) I appreciate the positive thinkers of each team (i.e. Roar and others for us). Helps balance things for me.

Because of my Penn State fandom, and my disdain for Jimmy Johnson dating to 1987, I am no longer an NFL fan. What I know about the NFL is from snippets on the news. Did you get a whole lot more realistic on Sunday when it sounds like they turned the locker Room into a hospital?

I have to admit, I was already more pessimistic before, than people are AFTER Sunday. Can't help it, its in my Philly dna. When it comes to Philly sports I expect the worst. Fortunately, I have PSU to offset that negativity. ;)

I learned to do something similar, but for a different reason. I stopped betting on any events involving teams that I had an emotional response to -- either intensely liking or disliking them. I felt I could be more objective in assessing the odds with teams that I didn't have strong feelings about one way or another.

Looks like a 4 leaf clover to me, but then I am also no botanical expert. :D
I verified with Kevin Dresser that these are oranges, and he is an expert at knowing an orange when he sees one

Having a true rival for #1 this year certainly makes the season a lot more interesting and dramatic, assuming Cael is fully in and doesn't redshirt a bunch of key guys.

The dual and team race against Ohio State a couple of years back made the whole season more exciting, and this year potentially promises the same.

Penn State has a dual win streak on the line; a great date to circle ahead of time on the calendar for when they travel to Iowa; and a legitimate team race likely forthcoming at NCAAs as well as the prospect of getting a number of guys to the Olympic trials at U. Park.

All things told, it's a kind of a new beginning—a spring that arrives early in autumn and builds into a tsunami in March . . . and hopefully April.

All,
WIN magazine came out with a second pre-season ranking on 10/10/19. Doesn't mean squat, but it is fun discussin'. RBY comes in at #4, and PSU back at #1.

Rankings updated to more accurately reflect the rankings they've been reading on Track and Flo ...

I think you meant to say "rankings updated to more accurately reflect the actual performances they have seen from the Hawk wrestlers over the last few seasons."
